I feel for you donna. The pain with RA can be excruciating like you say. Often pain in the toe is gout but if you've been diagnosed with RA it's probably another affected joint.

      Does it come and go?

Gout? Could it be that then and does that come and go?

My toe does not feel hot but is a little swollen and the bone feels like its sticking out a little.

Sorry for all the questions. Dont know whats happening as it keeps moving around my body. Only things that stay constant pain wise are my hands.

      Thankyou.

Yes I have. A month ago. Had a large dose of steroid. Seeing specialist again next week.

Read lots but it keeps moving from joint to joint every day or even hour.

    Hi Donna

I have palindromic arthritis which typically atacks one joint at a time.  It builds slowly and lasts for about 36 hours on average.  At the height of the flare, no painkillers will touch it (although some do induce sleep...thankfully).  After the attack the joint is back to normal, no pain, no indication that the joint was inflamed.   It took me years to get a proper diagnosis.  I now also have Rheumatoid arthritis which it often leads to.  This is just a suggestion, you probably wont have palindromic but its worth looking into.  Have a look on Arthristis UK and search under "Palendromic Rheumatoic Arthritis". It describes the illness to a T. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

      Hello

Thankyou for your reply. I will look into that. I have been diagnosed with ra but not the type. All my joints are affected apart from hips. But the pain in this toe is different to the other pain. Will also speak with my consultant.

      Take care.

It is most likely to be Gout which is related to arthritis. Gout is caused by a build up of uric acid in certain locations. It will come & go, it can at times be extremely painful. If it isn't treated, it can eventually be crippling. Ask your GP for advice ASAP. Also by watching & tracking your foods, you need to work discover what particular foods/drinks are kicking off the build up of Uric acid. This can be difficult to identify and often varies from person to person. In my case it was Polish sausage can be rich in fat, or virtually any cheese. Small quantities were ok, but if I ate too much I was soon in serious pain with Gout. The GP will be able to prescribe medication accordingly

, but finding out the cause for yourself is vital.
