I have had the most excruciating pain in my right big toe for the past 4 hours to a point where I couldn't put a shoe on. Ive rested etc. Then its just gone like nothing has been wrong with it. Any idea???

Gout? Could it be that then and does that come and go?
My toe does not feel hot but is a little swollen and the bone feels like its sticking out a little.
Sorry for all the questions. Dont know whats happening as it keeps moving around my body. Only things that stay constant pain wise are my hands.
Thankyou.

I have palindromic arthritis which typically atacks one joint at a time. It builds slowly and lasts for about 36 hours on average. At the height of the flare, no painkillers will touch it (although some do induce sleep...thankfully). After the attack the joint is back to normal, no pain, no indication that the joint was inflamed. It took me years to get a proper diagnosis. I now also have Rheumatoid arthritis which it often leads to. This is just a suggestion, you probably wont have palindromic but its worth looking into. Have a look on Arthristis UK and search under "Palendromic Rheumatoic Arthritis". It describes the illness to a T. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Thankyou for your reply. I will look into that. I have been diagnosed with ra but not the type. All my joints are affected apart from hips. But the pain in this toe is different to the other pain. Will also speak with my consultant.
Take care.
