Pain three weeks post open myomectomy

Hi everyone ,

I've started having pain last night and this morning . I had an open myomectomy three weeks ago and the pain hasn't been too bad and now this . It's like cramps and a deep pain in lower abdomen .

Is this normal ? Any advice appreciated .

Thankyou

Lizzie

It could be due to a period coming, I had my period soon after my open myomectomy and did suffer pain.  My surgeon did say the first 3 periods after an open myomectomy can cause pain and heavy period.  Also if you have overdone it on exercising then that could happen. I was advised to get back to gym after 1 month but found that if I overdid it on exercise then I felt pain. My sugeon told me to stick to a strict regime of pain killers (paracetamol and ibuprophen 3 timesa day) for the first 2 weeks even if I did not feel pain, as there is a lot of inflatmation and swelling after an open myomectomy. As long as you do not have a high temperature or discharge you can rule out infection. It does get better, I had 32 fibroids removed in January 2016 and started feeling better in week 3, swelling took longer to go down, at least 3 months. I finally have flat stomach, normal periods and better quality of life.  Hope you feel better soon.

Thankyou so much for your reply . Yes I was really concerned it might be an infection but I don't think I have a temperature or discharge so hopefully it's not that . I have been told no walking or exercise for six weeks , can't believe it sad I just had more pain today than is usual and I think maybe I will go back to taking the ibuprofen , I stopped a week ago .

I've maybe also been doing a bit too much but hope I haven't done any damage 🙈

Can I also ask you , is it ok to be drinking alcohol now . I've been having a couple of red wines in the evening , only thing keeping me sane .

Thanks again for all your help !!!

If your not taking medication, you can drink alcohol. But because you are going through healing, your diet ideally should be healthy, i.e. Vitamin C, Iron so Fruit, Veg, high quality protein as both help with healing.  Your not meant to lift anything heavy within the 6 weeks, but you are supposed to be doing short walks. I started with daily slow walkis of 5 mins in the first week up my road then moved to 10 miinutes once I started feeling stronger, then increased gradually, walking is important, as it prevents blood clots and aids healing. Some Surgeons are super cautious because they think women will overdo the exercise, but its best to listen your body. Mine recommended I go back to gym in 3rd week, but I felt it was too early, so started in 4th week. Swimming or walking in water is also recommened as it strengthens the uterus. If you were given any physio exercises after the surgery, its worth doing those as they also help the uterus.  Its major surgery so take time, but you will start feeling better by the 6 weeks. Swelling of stomach and numbness near scar, however can take several months to go.

Ibuprofen is not just for the pain but also for the inflamation, so its worth taking it as they prescribed it as helps wih the healing. I had to take it with paracetamol for the first 2 weeks, the surgeon made clear that I should take it even if I had no pain. Also had to wear surgical socks for the 10 days after surgery to avoid blood clots.

      You'll get better soon.

Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply I have been surprised at how even now at three weeks post op how weak I still feel and still in discomfort. Your lucky you were allowed to walk , my surgeon says I'm not allowed as it might impair on my muscles healing properly . However , I've read in loads of threads that walking is recommended so maybe this week I will try walking 20 mins a day .

I think I may have lifted bags too heavy that I'm not supposed to by accident , I hope it hasn't damaged anything 🙈

I think I'm allowed back in the gym at 6 weeks but I will be taking it super easy .

Thanks again for your support and advice , it really helps x
