Pain under left rib for 2 days - should I go the ER?

Hi. Yesterday morning my wife was climbing over me to get to her side of the bed (god knows why... she was sitting on my side and instead of walking to her just dragged herself on top of to get across), and she was moving she sort of "pulled" herself on my left side and I started feeling pain in my upper abdomen.

The exact location is right under the left rib (the last one, when I touch the spot I can feel a bit of that last rib). It's only hurting me when I touch it, or when I make certain movements (I was cycling earlier and felt as every bump in the road "awoke" the pain a little bit). At a certain point last night and this morning I was under the impression that I feel also a bit of pain in my back around the same location (right behind it), but can't say for certain.

I was reading for all possible causes for pain in this area - ruptured or enlarged spleen, heart attack, pancreatitis, costochondritis etc., but I don't have any of the indicating symptoms - no shortness of breath (maybe from time to time I breathe a little "harder" but nothing as if I'm gasping for air), no pressure in chest, cough, blood in stool etc. The spot is a bit tender maybe and it only "actually hurts" when I touch and press it. I do feel a bit of pressure about 2 inches lower from the that spot but not sure if it's the pain radiating there or if it's something else (since when I touch the area, the pain can be felt at its strongest at a certain spot and not spread wide too much).

I'm 30yo, (unfortunately) a smoker, not drinking alcohol (one beer since 2017 I believe) normal weight (maybe few extra, but still within my healthy BMI), taking from time to time Ritalin/Concerta/Adderall for my ADHD, and on Esomeprazole for my stomach when needed (before big meals or if I have some movements in there then before I go sleep).

Given it's a weekend, I can't go to my GP, but just wanted to check if it sounds dangerous in any way and if so should I go to the ER to get it checked out? or can it wait to Monday?

All the best.

Hi Daniel, my advice is to call 111, they will advise best course of action. Alternatively if you have a walk in centre pop in there. The wait is no way near the wait in A&E. You are in the UK aren't you? We are no docs, and you've joined forum for fibromyalgia, and whilst symptoms and ailments may be similar best to get advice from the professionals. You may have just bruised it for which I would suggest a cold compress and may be ibuprofen for the pain, but that's for minor pains. So if in the UK 111, anywhere else in the world if there is a number you can call for advice?

Hope you feel better soon x

Tnx for your help! I am in Austria actually, and that's kind of the issue, such services (if exist, I'm not sure), tend to speak German only, so I will have a hard time communicating the problem, which is why as far as my options it's either going to the ER (3-4 hours waiting-time), or waiting for Monday to see my GP. It really doesn't feel like something serious, more like I was bruised, but I always like to be sure to put my mind at ease.

Ok well obviously not much you can do now, so hopefully after you see your gp that'd be good? In the future check out online doctors. Even though you're in Austria you should be able to access NHS online advice doctors.

Hope it's all fine, and you get a clean bill of health.

    Hi Daniel

I just want you to know I get the same thing... Glad to hear I'm not alone... Ive had ECG blood tests etc and they are fine... I'm on Esomeprazol too... Its been put down to something that some fibro sufferers get... Can't remember what it's called.... Begins with C anyway. I get loads of chest and stomach pains... Anytime of the day just watching TV or eating dinner.. It just comes on anytime but I find its worse in bed and have to sleep on my back... I try to eat little and often which sometimes helps but no real help for pain from docs... Get it checked to put your mind at ease that will help any anxiety... Good luck x
