Pain when lifting leg

Yet another question but have appt. with surgeon coming up and want to be clued up.  Did anyone have pain down the front of the thigh, especially at the top, but only when trying to raise leg when lying on back.  This pain has lasted a long time but I’m hopeful it’s quite common as i think it’s just where they’ve cemented the implant. Front of thigh doesn’t hurt at all apart from trying to do this movement.

I had pain but it was from the op and bruising where they put the stem in. Mine was uncemented though. My pain was constant though.

Thank you.sorry it’s constant.  Hoping it’s not a problematic symptom.  It’s one I’d like not to worry about!

    Dear Carol,

I have the same pain when lifting the leg without bending the knee. I had my operation 2.5 years ago and this pain started 6 months ago after an operation from my other hip.

I'm going to physio and exercising , I have no pain or problem other than this.

My doctor says give it some time))

I wonder what your doctor will be saying?

I know that this situation is quite common, so don't worry much if this is the only problem.

    Take care

thanks for reassurance. Unfortunately I’ve had quite a lot of problems but I’d love it if at least one wasn’t anything to worry about!  I have noticed too that it doesn’t hurt when I bend my knee.  Am seeing a private physio in January.

I had the same problem for the first month in front of thigh where stem is. Uncemented posterior. It just went away.

I’m 8 months post op. so struggling to understand why it hasn’t gone.  Still, taking comfort from other posts saying it can last a long time.

Carol, it can last 12-18 months. A x-ray will show if the stem it tightly seated.  At 3 months and pain free, I over did it on the treadmill and had mid thigh pain walking sometimes. Dr told me to take it easy for a few months. I did and no recurring problem 18 months later

    Hey Carol,

Had my hips replaced a little over a year ago. I'm doing really well, but I experience pain as you describe in my left leg, at the top/front, where the leg meets the groin. It happens when I do a leg lift while laying prone, or pulling my left leg into the car. It's an annoyance and makes me a little clumsy because I can't move it rapidly in response to stumbling, etc.  My right hip replacement is fine. I was hoping it would go away, but I'm beginning to believe it won't.  The physician's assistant tells me he believes it in response to some bone regrowth rubbing against something. I've also read about acetabular impingement. You might google that to see what you come up with. Sometimes I think my symptoms are similar to impingement.

    Good luck,

    Jim

Thanks as this gives me something to ask surgeon.  Obviously I’d like it to stop but as long as it’s not a symptom that makes them start talking about a revision I’ll happily put up with it!  I had a half hip replacement so don’t think it can be impingement.
