    Dear Granny ,

I am so sorry to hear this - It brings up my own frustration, anger and resentment with PT ... I know how you feel -

You seemed to be doing so well and then this ... what kind of exercises does she make you do ...

I am 17 days post op from 2nd THR and doing it differently this time - first time I had PT, first at home and then in the gym ... she, young and eager, put me on machine to do leg presses with weight ... whoa !!!!!

then other hip started to hurt badly - sheer torture - I quit going all together ...

I changed physical therapist and have one now who is more "my"age (60's) and feel much more comfortable ... slowly building up strength, watching me do the exercises, correcting me etc ...

oh, I didn;t call him right away but waited for a week ... In Holland it is mandatory, I think, to immediately follow up with PT after you're discharged ...

can you describe your pain ?

Do you have an option to have another therapist?

be gentle with your self ... it seems that you are doing really great and perhaps this is the way your body wants you to slow down ???? (don;t get mad)redface

    big warm hug

Renee...I agree I need to slow down ...she has many exercises for me to do ...but the one I find that is the most oainful is to sit on the floor keeping my good leg straight bending the bad leg and crossing it over the good leg ...then push the bad leg towards my shoulder...the other thing is she will have me lay on the bed and she takes my bad leg and slowely she will pull on the leg and then moev it to the side slowely until my good leg is pulled to the side and the good leg is straight ....she pulls my leg quite far tp the side...this is I believe the exercise that has caused the pain...

My in home physio started in hospital ...then after I was discharged not for 3 weeks...it seems everybody here in Canada seems to start physio at different times depending on the doctor ...

Thank you for your sound advice

Going back to basics, we are told here to keep to the 90 degree and do not cross the midline of your body with your operated leg. Most of theses restrictions are lifted at 6 to 8 weeks, and we are then told to be careful and proceed gently to increase flexibility but not to do anything that hurts. To me those 2 exercises appear to be very close to the dangerish line and to be approached with care

      dear granny,

wow .... I used to work out a lot and did the exercises you described to get a good stretch ... not sure if these are so good for post-op THR ... at least, not yet .... muscles and tendons are not fully repaired and it does require a big pull on them ...

nope, I wouldn't do them anymore ... I think I would go back to basic exercises to strenghten the muscles and gently lengthen them ... do my walks etc ....

you know your body best Granny .... I know you don;t want to be rude and she is doing her job, but you come first !!!

if you don;t enjoy doing them, don;t do them ... it won't work and you might hurt yourself ....

my motto: there is no gain in having pain after THR -

      warm hug

    Hello grannygoodwytch

I am sorry you are going through this. You do have the option to change the PT instructor. If you phone them up and say you would feel more comfortable with an older and maybe more understanding person they will see what they can do I am sure. As for the pain can I suggest you phone your surgeons secretary and get it checked out. Explain what you have been doing and the pain you are in. You can't carry on in pain like that you need it looking at to make sure there is no damage. It is too early in your recovery to be doing too much any way.

I'm so sorry to hear this, especially after you were doing so well.

I think perhaps the PT has pushed you too far but I don't think it will be the hip, joint itself, more probably tendon, muscle etc which can hurt more than a break! I certainly would see someone about it if it doesn't get any better but if it is this all they will do is issue painkillers and tell you to rest so maybe that's an idea for you now anyway, just to be on the safe side, although if you as in that much pain I doubt you would be up to it anyway.

I really hope this subsides for you quickly. It's so frustrating when you appear to take a backward step!

    Take care.

Wow, with all that you have been doing why do you need PT 3 1/2 months later. I had PT at home the 1st few weeks and at PT office for 4 weeks the 1st month after surgery.

It seems you have been doing just fine. Why is it needed now?

Lorai that was my question as well....I was doing so well...I had 3 physio apts at home after surgery...then was told I had to go to the hospital for four more...I am not sure why...I do believe I was pushed too far..I will let it heal and see my GP ...don't think I will return tp physio ...

Oh dear, not the way things should happen. Though it does seem as though  the physio precipitated the problems it may be worth insisting on seeing your GP to ensure that it is nothing else going on. Then as others have said insist on another physio, or at least that the young one is supervised. She may not only be doing damage to you but to others as well.

    This is only my opinion.

Physo's get you to perform exercises to gauge your limits then proceed to push those limits. Unless you have worked with a person for months/years they have no idea of your abilities or determination to get back to normal, so judge that you have more scope to stretch and heal.

    That is their job.

I see you as determined, so believe that your physio pushed you beyond and you continued to push to get even "better". Personally I realised  early that I knew my body better than any kid just out of Uni, so spurned physio as soon as I left hospital. Muscle memory took over as pain eased. This has worked for me as I had surgery early July and spent Saturday night dancing to hard techno music for over 4 hrs.
