Pain worse than before surgery

My surgery was 3;1/2 months ago...I was doing amazingly well...returned to belly dancing walking and swimming.....back to all regular house work etc....I had physio at home and the once I was doing well enough to go to the hospital I was sent for physio there.....on Thursday I had my 3rd treatmenr....after the second one I had a little pain...after thursday I am in more pain than I was before surgery.....the therapist is very young and I am now wondering how much experience she actually has,,,I am refusing to go for any more physio...This should NOT be happening .....I was not having any pain before I went to her...anybody else experience this ....I am so angry...

I am so sorry to hear this - It brings up my own frustration, anger and resentment with PT ... I know how you feel -
You seemed to be doing so well and then this ... what kind of exercises does she make you do ...
I am 17 days post op from 2nd THR and doing it differently this time - first time I had PT, first at home and then in the gym ... she, young and eager, put me on machine to do leg presses with weight ... whoa !!!!!
then other hip started to hurt badly - sheer torture - I quit going all together ...
I changed physical therapist and have one now who is more "my"age (60's) and feel much more comfortable ... slowly building up strength, watching me do the exercises, correcting me etc ...
oh, I didn;t call him right away but waited for a week ... In Holland it is mandatory, I think, to immediately follow up with PT after you're discharged ...
can you describe your pain ?
Do you have an option to have another therapist?
be gentle with your self ... it seems that you are doing really great and perhaps this is the way your body wants you to slow down ???? (don;t get mad)
big warm hug

My in home physio started in hospital ...then after I was discharged not for 3 weeks...it seems everybody here in Canada seems to start physio at different times depending on the doctor ...
Thank you for your sound advice

wow .... I used to work out a lot and did the exercises you described to get a good stretch ... not sure if these are so good for post-op THR ... at least, not yet .... muscles and tendons are not fully repaired and it does require a big pull on them ...
nope, I wouldn't do them anymore ... I think I would go back to basic exercises to strenghten the muscles and gently lengthen them ... do my walks etc ....
you know your body best Granny .... I know you don;t want to be rude and she is doing her job, but you come first !!!
if you don;t enjoy doing them, don;t do them ... it won't work and you might hurt yourself ....
my motto: there is no gain in having pain after THR -
warm hug

I too am sorry to hear you are in pain. Rest , icepack, call and talk to the head physio in hospital. Remember you are in charge iof your body.
If pain does not subside in 24 - go back to your GP
Hope you feel better wuickly

I am sorry you are going through this. You do have the option to change the PT instructor. If you phone them up and say you would feel more comfortable with an older and maybe more understanding person they will see what they can do I am sure. As for the pain can I suggest you phone your surgeons secretary and get it checked out. Explain what you have been doing and the pain you are in. You can't carry on in pain like that you need it looking at to make sure there is no damage. It is too early in your recovery to be doing too much any way.

I think perhaps the PT has pushed you too far but I don't think it will be the hip, joint itself, more probably tendon, muscle etc which can hurt more than a break! I certainly would see someone about it if it doesn't get any better but if it is this all they will do is issue painkillers and tell you to rest so maybe that's an idea for you now anyway, just to be on the safe side, although if you as in that much pain I doubt you would be up to it anyway.
I really hope this subsides for you quickly. It's so frustrating when you appear to take a backward step!
Take care.

It seems you have been doing just fine. Why is it needed now?

Physo's get you to perform exercises to gauge your limits then proceed to push those limits. Unless you have worked with a person for months/years they have no idea of your abilities or determination to get back to normal, so judge that you have more scope to stretch and heal.
That is their job.
I see you as determined, so believe that your physio pushed you beyond and you continued to push to get even "better". Personally I realised early that I knew my body better than any kid just out of Uni, so spurned physio as soon as I left hospital. Muscle memory took over as pain eased. This has worked for me as I had surgery early July and spent Saturday night dancing to hard techno music for over 4 hrs.
