Pain worse today than yesterday

I had a thr a week ago, came home two days ago, didn’t expect pain to lessen much as only a week but it did lessen yesterday after exercise elevation & ice. It didn’t hurt quite so much to sit on the loo seat or raise leg a bit more to get into bed. So I was expecting to stay at that pain dip. But today pain is - dare I say - more severe than when I came home. I don’t expect to have hardly any pain but I’m a bit upset that I’m in as much pain again as day 1. As soon as I stand after sitting for half hour with elevation/ice it is sooo painful again, not groin thank goodness but all of thigh. Any tips please?

Hi Sarah, I’m on day 18. My worst day so far was day 13 when the pain I felt was far worse than day 1. I took painkillers and went to bed early. I  don’t really have words of wisdom/ advice I just wanted to share that the pain can seem to come and go. I’m thinking of you and hope you’re feeling better soon xx

If you have a reclining chair that helps. I found that the day after I exercised was horrible! Staying iced and on at least Tylenol helped! Standing after sitting awhile is horrible, even now and I am at eleven weeks.

I only have paracetamol. Hospital only wrote paracetamol and liquid morphine on my discharge letter but gave me neither. I’ve requested the morph from gp yesterday but nothing come through yet. I don’t want to end up reliant on morphine but I don’t know what else to take. I’ve got ice/frozen peas on thigh all the time but the pain is very bad. We have to do our exercises every day but I’m now starting to dread doing them because of the pain. I have a recliner chair thank goodness and this is helping me a lot.

      Dear Sarah

It's very early days and I think your enthusiasm has just git the better of you! Time to take a couple of days break. Just do some gentle exercises to keep the muscles active and then off you go but try to take it at a slower pace for a bit.

      Good luck, Richard

Hi Sarah, paracetamol isn't strong enough so early. Give the Dr a ring ASAP for some stronger medication ! ?

Hi Sarah, did you stay in the hospital an extended time?

We are all different. I just did my second THR. My first one was so easy. This one is so different. No pain coming home next day but wen I got home it was the worst pain I got even compared to living with pain for 8 yrs. I’m sure it was due to my 3 hour trip home. Next day I was fine. So after 2 weeks I start on gentle exercises and 2 days after I start with some discomfort down my thigh and knee. So I stopped the stretches. I told doc and he said to continue with gentle stretches but mainly walk walk walk.

    Wishing you well.

    Sarah,

If yours is anything like mine, get ready for a rollercoaster of good days, bad days, some pain, little pain, different types of pain, Not to scare you but as everything heals things hurt differently. My week one was great, little pain just very weak, about day 10, my leg swelled out of control. That was my worst pain for the next 10 days for sure, as it took 10 days of staying on my back in bed with leg in the air above heart packed in ice and pressure wrapped from toes to groin. My surgery was august 17. even today I have strange pains that come and go, but I am told this surgery will take 6 months to really feel good, and a year to feel back to normal life. All I can say is being so early, Just lay on back elevate and ice all day! It apparently is really easy to over do it week one and bleed and swell.

    Good luck
