Painful Burning Sensation In Urethra - No Uti Or Std - Female

Posted , 141 users are following.

I am a 21 year old female in the UK, and I have been suffering with a painful burning sensation which I believe to be coming from my urethra since September 2014. The pain comes and goes throughout the day, and it will be at its most intense after having urinated, and after sex. At its worst I struggle to walk. The need to urinate has increased but there is no difficulty in going, though I do now most often have two streams when urinating which sometimes will stop and start. On multiple occasions there has also been thick blood in my urine too.

No UTIs have ever shown up on the paper dip test at my local GPs, though I have had UTIs in the past. I have tested negative to all STDs. I have had ultrasound scans which have shown nothing abnormal. I have had numerous internal examinations by doctors and one by a Gynaecologist, all have said everything looks normal and healthy.

My GP has had me try at least 6 different types of antibiotics but none have had any effect on me, except for Cefalexin which I took once a day for 28 days, the pain felt lifted and sex was possible again, but 3-4 days after having finished my course I was back to how I was before them.

I drink plenty of fluids (including cranberry juice) and eat healthy, I don't drink alcohol, smoke, or take drugs. All pain killers have very little effect on the pain, only a hot water bottle sat between my thighs brings any relief. Taking cranberry capsules, and/or cystitis relief sachets has had no effect.

I am about ready to give up on my local GP, its doctors and the NHS, no matter how many appointments I make and attend no progress is ever made, no tests are ever taken and my request to be referred to a Urologist has been repeatedly turned down, I am only ever told to drink more water and to try a new antibiotic, which I pay for each time, no one seems willing to search and to find out what is causing the pain. Affording to go private is a problem for me though, and so I just hope there is someone out there who can relate to me and give me guidance/knowledge on what to do.

This pain is now negatively affecting all aspects of my life.

If men suffered this would have been solved .This is perhaps why connection with kidneys ignored. My Prof found that hospital tests don't show what stronger microscope can .Then there's the remit & procedures & polic [ Low Priority]  that restrict objective research . When it concerns pyuria/sepsis how frightening & concerning is it  .

      Hi Julie

Men suffer from many maladies that are very difficult to address and to which there seems to be little knowledge or help. I've had a sore throat for 4 years no answers and now burning frequent painful urination. Same regiment of multiple antibiotics with all tests negative. The "nice" thing for me is that I've been dealing with erection problems too which oral meds aren't helping. I don't drink smoke or involve myself with drugs. In fact I am athletic and 53 years old.I have done everything in life to to fit and healthy yet I've struggled and survived chronic fatigue in my 30s thyroiditis prostatis excessively low testosterone asthma diverticulitis ibs two cracked vertebrae and a liver mass. If a man had these issues they would have solved them! Honestly that hurts more than most of the pain I've endured because it's difficult to think that we can blame others for lack of effort based on gender. As far as I know breast cancer gets much more attention than prostate cancer .for example. I doubt it has to do with gender and more to do with resources and implies impact of the different. Conditions in society.

Men are not your enemy..... Unless of course you believe they are and make it so !

God bless and I hope you find your solution to your health concern.

'l generally dont like the male female stereotypes or cliche,d responses, and l know men can also suffer and often be fobbed off, neglected, but think they are a little less likely to go to gps as soon re intimate problems.

Bu the criticism wasnt particularly about male patients, more about drs responses to male and female patients, and thats if its  female gps also, who can have poor responses or neglect to either. male or female, but l think female patients on speaking of their symptoms  are more likely to be suspected of it being a phycalogical or hormal problem, than a male.

Long held stereotype cliche,s about females with problems, `its her time of the month, its her age,`, and l,m not denying females can be affected phycalogically at certain times of their lives, and are  generally more complex and emotional than males.  But vast majority are intelligenct and  rational enough to know when theyre symtpoms are physical and not phycalogical, and do resent dr,s male or female, often resorting to old cliche,d stereotypes about symtpoms being a phycalogical response.  lve had same responses many times, as l guess many females have, l had it for years over symptoms that caused me frequent severe pain and poor health with serious restrictions on my lifestyle, partnership children, this went on so long despite going to great lengths to find solution, thats me not them, l was affected phycalogically, anxious and depressed, though still quite rational in knowing it was a physical problems, and after finally saw the right specials and had the right test and got a diagnoses, and treatment that did improve symtpoms 90percent, but l couldnt get those lost years to poor health back, Now many years later, lve another set of syptoms causing me poor health, and unbelievable getttin same response from same surgery, different gps, others retired now, but my past experiences and neglect by gps will be on  my records, still its just so automatic for many gps to fall back on  phycalogical female responses, which drives me mad also.  But its not against men at all, for me, its against medics be it gps, nurses, specialists who are more likely to resort to phycalogical with females than males.  But suffering and neglect are equally bad for both male and female, just a bit more of a battle for females to get past its a female thing.  l and many females dont see men as the enemy, in fact many females are more comfortable and relaxed with males ahead of females. l can see youve been through the mill also, and hope you didnt suffer neglect for a long time. no one should have to. Best wishes to all who are sufffering and battling for diagnoses treament.

Aw hun i feel for you. Iv been almost same since july 14 altho iv had no visible blood but all my tests are normal incl cystoscopy so now im being ref to gynea. I cant believe ur gp is refusing u a urologist! I wud either change gp n ask new gps for ref to uro or go bk to ur gp n tell them u will be putting a complaint in about the level of care they are offering *or lack of! And the fact that u are female means they treat u like a hypocondriat (men hardly ever go docs unless somethin serious hence they get treated more seriously then women!) Its their duty of care to explore all possible causes

Hope u can get seen by a uro asap x

I wouldnt say i douche with the vagisil bath water but obv some does entre u when washing. So maybe worth a try? X

Thank you for your reply and advice mimi123! I too have cut out tea and now religiously drink crandbury juice, I have also changed my contraception (from the mini pill to Implanon) and have noticed a great difference, though the problem is still there as pain will still flair up, but only a couple of days a week now.

I still havent been to a Urologist yet, my doctor says he has put me on the waiting list (a month ago) but I have yet to hear from anyone yet.

I will try to check back on here more regular, and will be sure to share with you should I ever find a cure, or even reason for what we are suffering from! x

I literally feel like I could have written this myself. I am 22 and started getting this when I was about 18 and I am at the end of my tether. It started with UTI's which were dealt with by taking antibiotics and then I started getting the same kind of symptoms but when ever I went to the DR my urine samples came back all clear. I had a full STI test and was all fine, had a scan on my kidneys which again came back fine.

Evetually I got taken in to hospital and they stretched my urethra but to my disapointment made little to no difference. I even went to a specialist who ended up putting me on bladder relaxants which i'm unsure as to why because it has nothing to do with my bladder and the pain is all in my urethra. This eventually lead to me getting crippling anxiety because I couldn't leave the house without feeling like wanting to rip out my vagina (excuse the gross detail but that is literally how it makes me feel at times). I also sometimes get vaginal spasms when it is really bad.

Right now I am having a bout of intense pain and I literally just want to cry. All I can do to temporarily ease the discomfort is sit in a very hot bath. I have been told that camomile tea is good for it but again hasn't made much difference. I have tried the likes of cranberry extract, cistopurin and so much more but nothing has worked.

If you have any advice on ANYTHING that has helped pleaaaase let me know. I would say one thing though. A lot have people have told me to drink cranberry juice which unless it is pure, fresh cranberry juice is a big no no. The cranberry juice you get in the carton is full of additives and sugar which is a big irritant and will make your urine very acidic so try to avoid that.

Sorry for the big ramble but I hope this has given you some comfort knowing you're not alone xx

l,m sure youve probably seen info about interesticial cystitus, if not its worth checking out, either on here or c.o.b site, as you do get same dragging pain in  urethra bladder, l can so relate to wanting to rip it out, lve felt that many times, its like a constant entity of dragging heat and pain thats near impossible to ignore, or switch off from, thats how it was for me when at its worst, the bladder can cause inflammation in urethra, have they done a cystascope, usual way of diagnosing i.c and other probs when samples show no infection, did they give a reason for dilation, l didnt think it a remedy for pain, more so if no diagnoses given, some get it when urethra narrow and flow poor

If theyve not done one you could ask them to do cystascope to see if cause of pain can be found. Some use d mannose, more info on c.o.b site.  Hope you get help.

      Hello Jessica

I have felt like I am the only person with this feeling and problem for 7 years!! Two cystoscopies later, organic yoghurt, cranberry, estrogen shots, nylon and cotton underwear, coconut juice etc. etc cleaning 5 times+ a day still suffering! I almost cried knowing others are having this problem. I too have the feeling of wanting to rip away everything. Mine starts when I get in bed.

A friend has told me yesterday that because I am on Lisiniprol (7 years!!!) it could be that - should my doctor know this? Who knows....will now follow that route. Jessica if you hear of any relief Please let me know.

Hi, after finally being referred to an Urologist and having had a Cystoscopy performed, I have been diagnosed as having Painful Bladder Syndrome, also known as Interstitial Cystitis.

I’m finding a change in my diet (tomatoes/tomato based foods trigger an excruciating pain for me, likewise with alcohol and cheese) to be the greatest relief. I still experience random “flares”, but I can now go days without any pain.

      My advice:

      - Keep a food/drink diary, you may be able to pin point if certain foods/drinks are playing a part.

      - Keep pushing to see an Urologist, only they have the ability to make a Cystoscopy happen, and only a Cystoscopy can determine if you have Painful Bladder Syndrome.

Good luck and I wish you all the best x

      Hi!

Thanks for your posting. Sounds like me but in additionmy urinalysis shows microscopic blood. Know anything about that?

I got my symptoms when I was 17 after getting a UTI, I had blood and white blood cells in my urine when I had the infection I was given two courses of antibiotics and they tested my urine, it was clear after these antibiotics but I still had symptoms of burning after I had had a wee. They then sent me for an sti check which came back all clear, they then gave me cream for thrush and other infections which was no help at all, I then went back and they had done loads of blood tests checking me for diabetes and celiac disease and many more...all negative. Then they gave me a drug called Buscapan which was a muscle relaxer which made the symptoms worse and caused nausea etc so that was stopped. He then referred me to a gyny who did a scan, I had a stiff and tilted uterus but bladder and kidneys normal! So they then sent me to see their best urologist, he told me he wanted to do a cystoscopy and a urethral dilitation just like you, nothing abnormal was found from the cystoscopy so no chances of interstitial cystitis but my urethra was quite tight, however after initial relief the symptoms came back in less than three days. I'm only 18 and I'm just about to go off to uni it is an absolute nightmare and hurts mainly after sex and after weeing in general. I am booked in for a follow up appointment at the end of this month and am not looking forward to more tests. However this may help if you haven't already read about it, try changing your toilet paper and shower gels, I'm going to try it as when I go for a wee in the morning I feel no pain but then it gets worse throughout the day like it is getting irritated by something. I've also heard about a disorder called vulvadynia which we could look into also.

I am becoming desperate to find a solution for this horrible problem I am having, its been nearly a year now and I'm worried it is going to continue. If you find any relief from using and trying something new please let me know and anyone else who reads this!

I hope you all solve your problems

Advice water. Water water water water water! Preleaf is a acidic remover. You can buy Preleaf at your local pharmacy or Walmart. You may need to ask the pharmacists about it. You cannot drink anything but WATER. It's helps so much. I can't stress how much water means to your body. I have the same exact issue. All I drink is water . LOTS OF WATER!

      Hi Katie

      Im 23 just..

I have the exact same as you, im constantly suffering with pain when peeing or just about to pee. Ive had many courses of antibiotics, swabs, internal creams, thrush cream and internal tablet for thrush. Blood tests to check for diabetes and to also check my kidneys etc that came back all clear. Numerous wee samples and that came back all clear too.

      Its like a vicious circle.

I last went to drs about a month ago about it and got prescibed a cream called, estriol. Its a hormonal cream if I remember right. She said to me im lack of oestrogen :-/ as i told her these pains only occur close to my periods. Then she told me it's urethritis too. And told me if internal cream didnt work i have to go back. Which im having to as its still happening ive only been experiencing all of this for around about 5-6 maybe a little longer.

About the sex part where you said it hurts after, i dont usually suffer after. And it doesnt hurt when i have it either, i just tend to be very dry and its a struggle.

I hope we both get to the bottom of this as its not a nice feeling at all.

Its so uncomfortable when it happens when im out i just want to go back home strip off as im so irritated and just lay down. Its also brimming my self esteem down.

      Hi Jessica

I really feel for you 😔 I too have been experiencing similar issues with every test and exam under the sun performed and still no concrete answers. I have pressure in the bladder region though and that transfers pain straight into my urethra- burning, stinging, throbbing, hyper sensitivity with urinating the pain is so bad I cry every time.

However I do have some food for thought, my urologist as well as my GP believe I may have damaged a nerve in my pelvic floor region which causes this chronic pain. Unfortunately the process of this getting diagnosed is by elemunating all possibilities- IC, chronic uti's, all reproductive area etc. If every area has been covered and they are still unable to find a physical cause then they put it down to nerve damage.

I'm going through this process now and hope to get some answers soon.

I know it's hard, bloody hard! To not get respite from this pain even a little bit. I feel like I've been living in a nightmare every day for the last 4 months but don't stop investigating and make sure you have a fantastic GP and ask loads of questions!

Also ask to be referred to a pain specialist/ neurologist if this is possibly nerve pain related.

I wish you all the best and hang in there, we all need to hang in there 😊

Hi my name is Michelle I'm 53 in menopause and for the past two months experiencing pain and pressure by my clitoris or it could be coming from my urethra. I had a transvaginal ultrasound and it came back normal. I have an appointment to see a Urologist and the last one I saw wanted me to take a Cystoscope test. I'm terrified of having it. Have you or anyone you no had one? Are there other tests a Urologist can do? MRI? My pain is becoming more frequent and painful. Some days I have no pain. I would appreciate any advice and support. Merry Christmas

      Hi Michelle

      Merry Christmas to you too.

Poor darl, don't be scared of a cystoscopy. I had one about 8 years back because I had a parasite in my bladder from traveling through South America. It's totally painless, they put you under anesthetic and the whole procedure takes about 20 mins. There's sometimes a risk of urunary tract infection afterwards due to the catheter but they put you in precautionary antibiotics, just incase.

I'm due to have another one early Jan. Hopefully I'll have some answers and can pass them onto you.

But please don't worry, there's nothing scary about it 😊

i know it is been over a year but i see a lot of women complaining about pain after utis but they are not very clear about what kind of pain it is how long it lasts if it is constant or they dont write backto tell if its gotten any better..im insomthing similar too but i cant unerstand cause noone is too speciefic..an im kind of worried too..so i had lots of utis but they would pass normaly after antibs but last year i had one and lasted for 2 rounds of antbs but even then on meds i had a weird irritation in urethra i believe maybe a bit in bladder, it started with that uti and i had been left with that since even though after i was clear of utis..i take one fourolin after sex..so the irritation was more intense at the begginong and with months it slowly cooled down sometimes i wouldnt have it then at vacations i wouldnt feel it and then after  months 10...i didnt have it at all...( i was only left with a burning sensation in urethra when i believe dehydrated something with ph levels i think and after i would drink water it would go away..it comes once a day but i have it till now, after my first antibiotics 2 years now, cause i used to have a lot of utis and took a lot of antbs)..so i was clear of the irritation for 2 months and now i had a uti again ecoli and the irritation is back...i m not clear yet of the microbe i think cause urine still smell bad, the smell when a uti is there but i ll take a test tommorrow..i dont believe the  irritation has anything to do with the microbe though, its not that i ll be clear and i wont have the irritation again..i believe it starts from that although..maybe something irritated the bladder and urethra..so i had all tests you know all clear..except yeast infections which i have constanly for 2 years cause antbs and of ph levels who are destroyed by antbs..but i dont think is linked to that cause other times with utis and yeast infections i never had the irritation..so the irritation is sometimes a burning in urethra not! when peeing (a mild one), when bladder is full and time passes so pee is settled in i feel a relief.. not pain like usually in ic..other times is like my bladder is slightly throbbing kind of a really small amound of pain its not actually pain more of a discomfort and a little pressure (last year i had pressure too especcially if i d pee when my bladder wasnt full) lot of weirdstuff that a cant actually explain..went to 4 urologists all say it is anxiety..at least last year when months of the uti had passed (and i was really obssesed scared it would never leave..i couldnt sleep well i was thinking all the time i was almost depressed not because it was bothering me too much i could handle it if i knew it would go away...) so one professor urologists the last one told me it is because you are obsessed with it and that from stress a lot of people feel a lot of thing in the bladder and worst..like the other one told me if you let it go it will let you go to..now my pathologists told me that a lot of girls after utis the epithilium is irritated in urethra like after sex (vagine also) so a lot have that irritation and that symptoms afterwards..my gyno says that that burning feeling when dehydrated is why they tell girls to drink water to clear the ''area'' and the pressure sometimes after peeing is because the bladder is throbbing (also from anxiety it throbs and after utis the bladder stil throbs the urologists told me) so now i dont know what hasto do with anxiety cause it started with uti i can see that it must began from uti like now and i took the symptoms with me from anxiety (it was a really stressfull period then going to college in another city) my pathologist told me it is called urethritis like i told you after utis (the urethilum is bothered by the microbe and when it is gone you can still feel the symptoms my urologists told me too and that girls with anxiety are consitrating a lot to it andanxiety makes it worst..those things told me they leave alone...im afraid i have ic even though i dont have actual pain like i told you (but last year told you dont need to do anything it will leave you alone  by itself and it did but now it is back eith the uti..when i forget about it i dont feel though like last year...maybe it is better that last year i m not sure..but ive read that ic can br not that painful and can come and go and that it progresses to secondary ic and im so frightened if i have it and it gets worst..i dont want to do a cystoscope...it is not needed they told me and the symptoms are not that intense im just terrified if they never go away...so thats mycase i read a lot like that but not actually descrbing mine so i get confused..and i wanted to know, im searching if ic ever goes away as a syndrome or if you get it you have it forever...my urologists one of them told me that a lot of women get urethral syndrome.nut ths one has a lot of pain in urethra and thay give antbs first and then they give antidepressives cause it is a syndrome cause by anxiety..he told me i dont have that and mine will go away...maybe like last year my baldder gets irritated my urethra too by utis and i get these symptoms afterwads following me and like last year it will go away i hope...so look about the urethral syndrome it sounds a lot like your symptoms...(my aunt since  9 years old had utis and burnings and pain and blood once until she was 20 and was given lots of antbs but the couldnt find always why...had a cystoscope too nothing..but it all got away after whe stopped everything and was oldera doctor then told her you ll cut everything cause all these meds are giving  you all that symptoms...so who knows...ic is also manageble i read...so check the syndrome i told if you arent better maybe antidepressives help...and id like to hear what happened to you how are you today if your better...hope to all those things all doctors told me go away eventually..too bad noone writes back to read if their symptoms went away...it is all probalby linked to uti irritations to antbs and anxiety...lots of women have them!! blesses to all of you!sorry for the long post i just wanted to write it all down for once to get them out of me....

      Hi Michelle

I am 54 and peri menopausal. I too have been suffering with this mess for about 5-6 weeks now. I've been on 2 types of UTI mess with no success. Also led to a yeast infection because I also taken other mess daily(Blood pressure/ Nexium) I have had 3 urinalysis test coming back cloudy because I was also having blood in my urine from not sure my cycle which started in the interim of all of this. What Indid notice is it got worse during the menstral cycle! The constant burning. My GP suggested also that I take a Probiotic pill daily to balance out my PH which my gyne said was out of wack as well. Since my cycle stopped on Monday the burning is not as severe only when I'm sitting and sometimes lying down. I have a scheduled CT scan of my Kidneys and pelvic area on Saturday with a follow up cythoscopy. I will let you know what the results. We are close in age is why I responded to you thinking maybe it's menopause related as well. Good Luck to you!
