Painful cateract surgery

Posted , 6 users are following.

so last week I had Cateract surgery on my other eye.The first was pain free but this one was quite painful to the point I wanted it to stop.Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm 55 and was diagnosed with Cateracts in both eyes caused by my Asthma steroid inhaler which shocked me as I had been taken this for over 20 years and my doctor never mentioned this risk.I was thinking of complaining but 'what's the point' as they always deny it despite it written in the leaflet as a 1/1000 risk. Any thoughts on this and the surgery being painful?

thanks

if the numbing was only with the eye drops then they did not administer proper dose. if you had an anesthesiologist and numbing was with IV then it would be very strange for it to be painful. good luck.

I have seen information to the effect that the second surgery tends to have more discomfort than the first eye. There seems to be three different methods of doing surgery when it comes to the medication used to control the discomfort. Some use an IV where you are somewhat out of it, but usually aware of a few things. Next is a oral medication like Ativan taken under the tongue just before the surgery. Last some only use the topical numbing drops in the eye, which is normally included with all three types of methods.

I had IV sedation and a numbing eye injection. My left eye was the first eye that I had surgery on, and it was the only one with a cataract. The cataract was severe and I believe the surgery required more manual effort to remove the cataract. Despite all the anesthesia, I could still feel some sensations of pressure in the left eye.

The right eye had no cataract (it was done to match). The surgery took literally 2 minutes, there was zero pain, it was a breeze.

It's possible that your second eye had more to "work" on. Or maybe an improper dose of numbing medication was used. Either way, I hope you did not find the experience too traumatic.

Are you still experiencing any pain? I'm curious because my left eye, the more painful one, was also painful for quite awhile after surgery (I needed pain medication). My right eye was perfectly fine after a day of healing.

When I had it done I had Ativan & numbing drops, My husband had the drops and an IV. He remembers nothing, I was aware. I had a little bit of discomfort but I think it was that the doctor leaned over and pressed on the clamp that was keeping my eye open.
