Painful colonoscopy

Having had many operations in the past plus chemotherapy I can say without any hesitation that my colonoscopy carried out at Nottingham City Hospital was the most painful experience I have ever endured. It was sheer agony throughout and even though I wrote to complain afterwards the only response was \"that I had the correct amount of sedative-3mg. of Midazolam and I did not complain at the time.\" If they treated animals in this manner they would be sued for cruelty. Finally my friend who lives in Bournemouth has had to colonoscopies in the past both done under general anaesthetic. So why can't every hospital offer this alternative?

I had Picolax and 'Did An Elvis' ( out cold on the floor of the loo for 5 odd minutes ) during the proceedings !

I have been reading all the post on this site with great interest. I went to see a private doctor because I was not happy with my local GP and he advised me that according to what I had told him about my condition I will need a colonscopy. In fact he said I satisfied all the criteria to get an urgent colonscopy. My problem is that my condition is such that it is impossible to examine me because of the intense pain that I am experiencing. The private doctor attempted to examine me with his fingers but he too was surprised that he could not touch me as I found the pain unbearable. He said that I would have to have the colonscopy under anasthetic.
After reading all the posts here I am worried that if they do the colonscopy under general anasthetic they may cuase more damage because I am not awake to alert them of the intense pain i will feel as they probe, and secondly if the colonscopy is not under general anasthetic how in gods name am I going to cope with the pain that all of you have described when right now it is so painful that you cant even get a matchstick in there let alone probing fingers or tubes.
I will be extremely thankfull if some one on this site can comment on my plight. ( I'm so glad I came across this site)
