Painful electric-shock, Tooth crack or TN? please help me

On May 2015, I had an extraction on my right-bottom wisdom tooth. The tooth next to it had a deep cavity (close to the nerve),so my dentist did a root canal but she didn't clean the nerve. I have a electric-shock pain on the gum around my right-bottom-next to the wisdom tooth. That tooth got chipped last month (December 7, 2015), but I felt nothing, no pain. One week after the tooth got chipped, I did a regular cleaning at the dentist, and I told the dentist about the chipped tooth and she want to put a crown on that tooth.

Day 1 - 2 weeks after regular cleaning, I start to feel that my tooth getting sensitive by getting a little bit of electric-shock sensation every time my tongue touched my chipped tooth (I still ate and slept normal at that time)

Day 2 - pretty much the same with day 1.

Day 3 - after I woke up in the morning I felt painful electric-shock around the chipped tooth every time I moved my tongue, very sensitive. I got struggled to move my tongue and tried to fought back the pain just to drink a cup of water (it took 1 hour to drink a cup of water). 2 hours after I woke up that day, the pain just disappear, I did my routine activity normally (eat normally, but felt the electric-shock every time I chew the food) then I went to sleep.

Day 4 -The next morning, I had the same situation, but more painful, after 4 hours fought the pain, it was disappear. I came to the dentist just to get emergency root canal in that afternoon. The dentist did an X-Ray on the chipped tooth to check if there is a crack or no before the root canal. She said "the tooth looks fine, no need root canal. If the tooth got so sensitive, it's normal because of the chipped tooth," and she just gave me a thin layer of cement just to temporary cover the chip. I felt better at that day. I started to eat softer food like instant noodle.

Day 5 - I felt the same situation with day 4, after I had 5 hours sleeping, I got a painful electric-shock around my chipped tooth but little bit better. I ate softer food.

Day 6 - after having 6 hours sleep, the pain getting worse, I need more than 2 hours fighting with the pain just to drink a cup of water. I just be able to speak 4 hours after I woke up. I called another emergency dentist just to help me because my dentist close on that day. The dentist took another X-Ray on the chipped tooth and did examine that tooth. She said that my tooth looks ok but need root canal. And she found that my gum around the tooth got inflammation because I felt some pain when she push the gum with her finger and a very painful one when she tried to pull out my tongue. So she gave me antibiotic and ibuprofen. I cannot eat any food on that day because of the electric shock if I tried to chew something. That night I was so scared to go to sleep, so I just sit down on the bed.

Day 7 - I try to sleep 2 hours (sit position) and it was much better, little bit pain after I woke up so I put some ice in my mouth and the pain disappeared. Then went to work, I can talk normally, no pain on my tooth. I just felt a little bit of electric shock (no pain), but I still avoid eating anything but protein shake. I eat Ibuprofen 800mg and amoxicillin 500mg every 6 hours. Again, at night I got scared to go to sleep, so I sit down on the bed and t did research about my symptoms because both dentists don't know exactly what's the problem. Then I fell asleep for 3 hours.

Day 8 (today, Jan 4, 2016) - I woke up at 3am and I felt another painful electric-shock every time I move my tongue. I grab an ice water and try to put in my mouth while I was fighting with the pain. And then the pain disappear but I still felt the small pulse in my mouth. Then I did research about TN until 9am. I went to the dentist at 10am for root canal on the chipped tooth. Because I did research TN and found that some of the symptoms happens with me, so I ask to my dentist about TN, and she said "you are not suffering TN, the nerve from the cracked tooth got infection." Then she did the second root canal on that chipped tooth but this time she did clean all the nerve inside the tooth. After the root canal, I still numb so I didn't feel the electric shock when I move my tongue. But after 30 minutes I start to feel the pulse little bit. Now I just went home and trying to sleep. I fell asleep for 20 minutes then I woke up just because I got scared if the painful electric-shock come back. So I tried to move my tongue and the electric-shock happen again. Now the numb from is completely gone and I got scared again to go to sleep again. I'm so depressing and frustrating right now. I still consume ibuprofen and amoxicillin every 4-6 hours.

The symptoms that I feel:

- I so scared to go to sleep because if there is no activity in my mouth for 1 hour (i.e. Moving my tongue, moving my jaw like when you are talking), then I move your tongue, I will get a painful electric-shock sensation around the tooth and gum.

- I just eat a watery food like protein shake to survive. I afraid the symptoms getting worse if I eat something else.

Please give me any advice about my situation.

Is it a tooth problem or a gum inflammation or a TN or something else?

Thank you.

Was where you are with come and go shocks before I was diagnosed with TN. Sounds like TN. Get to neurologist asap Emergency room if you have to. You will get the medication needed.

I agree with Eddie. As a tn sufferer 5 years now it sounds exactly like what I deal with. That shock is so uncomfortable that i refused to talk or eat at times. I feel your pain. You are not alone. Please see a neurologist and if they prescribe you tegretol and it helps then you really do have tn. Pain killers would never work so please see that neurologist to get some relief. Its hard when we take such things for granted like being able to eat comfortably until stuff like this happens. Your dental work could have caused this too. Please keep us posted

Now there is no activity in my mouth for 20 minutes, then I tried to move my tongue and get the painful electric-shock. So now I move my tongue for a minute, the pain become less and less. So I'm pretty sure that the pain gonna come when there is no activity in my mouth for 10 minutes or more. Then once I move my tongue, BOOM! Painful electric-shock happen. When I stop moving the tongue, the pain stop. When I move my tongue to certain areas, I got shock again. So desperate. How sure you are that this is a TN, 100%?

How long you've been suffering TN? Can it be cured? Thanks. I keep posting all day and searching about my symptoms.

My tongue triggered the shocking as well. Even small movements. Talking drinking chewing etc. Usually there is no cure. But an xray showed my wisdom tooth was compressing the nerve in my lower jaw. I visited a maxillo facial and oral surgeon and he removed the tooth because he was positive that was my problem i got relief almost instanly then i had 6 months shock free and tegretol free. Then it came back a little but not as bad as before my oral surgery. It lasted like 3 weeks in nov/dec and now its gone again. I was told that would happen until it goes completely. I do get crawling sensations on my face though but its gotten better. Maybe your nerve is exposed or damaged from your dental work. High doses of b complex and cod liver oil pills can help heal nerves

How much money have you spent for surgery itself?

How much money for the medicine?

I'm just 32 years old. I don't have a lot of money. I hope I can survive until it's gone completely. It just happened 8 days ago.

      Thank you.

How to get a good night sleep without worrying about the pain in the next morning when I woke up and moving my tongue? I'm so desperate because I so scared to go to sleep and I didn't sleep for the last 3 days.

Then you have to get a prescription for tegretol. It would stop the shocking. It would also give your nerve a rest from firing off constantly preventing it from healing. I weaned myself off the pills after a few weeks of giving my nerve a rest. Thats when i realised it had stopped again. Try drinking alcohol to make you sleep stronger until you can get the medication. But PLEASE see a doctor asap its the only way you can get relief

Really, you need to go to the emergency room. You'll all figure out the money later. You need medication !

I agree with eddie and anyone else who thinks you should go to the emergency room immediately. Stop worrying about it and take some action. Just go there.
