Painful experience

Hi all,

I fractured my left ankle during a football game late in October this year.  It has been 6 weeks since I underwent surgery and so far I think I'm doing a good job.  It has been and still is a very painful and lonely experience.  To be in bed and marvel about people moving around freely hurts me.  I see certain friends of my getting ankle injuries but I never thought that I would going through the same thing.

I'm a very sporty person and I don't like sitting or laying down for longer periods of time.  After a long day at work I would go hiking to de-stress.  After getting my ankle fractured, the possibility of me doing what I love to do most reduced. I am so stressed and impatient with my ankle.  I am mentally frustrated with this.  Reading through the discussion forums has really helped me though.  Knowing that there are others out there who have endured this painful experience and come out good motivates me.  and for that I thank you all.  I hope my ankle heals sooner that soon.

Thank you all,

Ioane

You underwent surgery and now you have to let your ankle heal. If you start exercising on it sooner than it will just take longer to heal. Just know it is temporary good luck with your recovery!

I know exactly how frustrated you are feeling.   I am 72 and broke my ankle in three places back in July of this year.    I have always been a very active person and was simply mortified that I wouldn't be able to do all the things I usually did - especially as I did this injury exactly three months following a total hip replacement !

However, I'm now five months on.   I've done my exercises every day, three times a day and my progress has been truly wonderful.

I'm walking normally without any limp and can now manage about a mile each day.  My walking isn't quite as fast as it used to be but hopefully that will come with time.

I have no pain whatsoever in my ankle but there is a tightness in the ankle after a full day standing.

Take heart, you will get there providing you do your exercises.   I wish you the very best of luck.
