Painful hard inguinal hernia

I am sick and tired of waiting for this hernia to be repaired.  I was just thinking this morning that it hadn't been unbearably painful for a while and tonight it started again.  It is so painful, rock hard and again I'm getting colicky pains in my stomach.  I've told my consultant and my GP about these occurences but neither seem to think the are a concern because it all eases after a few hours.  My GP says that I could go to a and e but they wouldn't do anything until 6 hours after I'd eaten by which time the chances are that it would all have subsided.

I was referred to my consultant in March.  I had my 1st appointment with him in August.  He booked an appointment for a scan and said I'd be put on the waiting list for surgery.  I had the scan in Sept.  And now I have received a letter for another appointment with him in January to re-assess me to find an appropriate repair as this is my 3rd hernia in that area.

I am seriously thinking of getting this surgery done privately.  Has anyone else done this?  How quickly do they see you and would an NHS hospital provide a copy of the scan?

I think private treatment will cost you in the region of £1500 - £1800 and could be sorted in at least 2 weeks. Check out NHS Trust web sites for further details.

Hi Lesley I think it depends on your consultant with regards to cost I think someone on here paid 6000 for their operation privately. I think they were from London. You can often get an appt very quickly depending on when they have available appointments. Most consultants work privately aswell as Nhs. I would presume the cost of scans etc is included in the cost. I work in the Nhs and many patients I have had to refer (I'm an administrator) usually get there appts within a month. You can look up the consultant you want and then contact their secretary who book you in. Sadly Nhs appointments are a longer process but I wouldn't give up on it.

I think I'm going to phone my consultant's secretary tomorrow and tell her I'm thinking of going private because of the pain but will kick up a stink if I do

Hi Lesley, don't you find it strange doctors don't to seem to give a hoot, firstly about your agonising pain and dreadfull symptoms.

i think this is where the demonizing of our dearest NHS as being useless is once again clever trickery by this disgusting goverment who believe me is intent on privatising the jewel in the English crown. our much loved and respected worldwide,NHS of which I am so thankful for. this demonizing of our wonderful service seems to be hitting our GP,s who's seem and sre in some instances less careing don'tever think about going private I feel we are being forced into this situation were we are largely passed off by our over stretched GPs as being a minor complaint when you know like so many here on this blog that this awfull thing ruins lives  and can make us feel almost suicidal at times because never knowing from one day or one hour to the next how we are going to feel on any particular day.

and the fact that when it does flare up we are left feeling so down and miserable

by the whole sorry episode I beg you to pester your GP until he or she becomes proactive in your care. I wish you the best of luck keep soldiering on until you reach your goal.

Boho, I phoned my GP for an appointment today and I have one in 2 weeks time.  I was actually surprised that I got one that quick as last time my earliest appointment was for 4 weeks time!

Exactly the same thing happened to me last year.  I was referred in January and had surgery in August but was in agony for months before that.  When this hernia was found by my GP he said he'd make sure they didn't mess me around again but has since been unwilling to help.

Last year I pointed out that the hospital were going against the 18 week guidelines proposed by the government and was told that as my hernia was a complication of previous surgery the guidelines didn't apply.  They are doing the same again.  This is despite the surgeon from last year telling me that they discovered that my hernia was not incisional as they first thought.  They claim that my present one is incisional and I have it because I smoke...............therefore it is my own fault.   I am not overweight, I exercise and don't drink and I was particularly careful not to do anything I shouldn't after last years repair.

I never dreamt that I'd ever consider private health care but I'm fed up and going to end up losing my job if this keeps up

Hi Lesley, I completely understand how you feel and I have just gone on line to see how much it could cost.  About £3,000.  I'm going to make more enquiries if I don't hear this week.  I think the NHS would provide a copy of the scan after all, it's your health.

Yes, that's the figure that I'm getting.  I might talk it over with my GP first though and I'm definitely phoning the hospital tomorrow

You have to ask yourself why are so many of seeking private health care!

Because they are forceing it on us.

because physical pain is such a great motivator for seeking a quicker alternative to the long wait.

i smoke and to hell with their attitude people get pregnant and have complications is that self inflicted does it mean we don't care  for them either?

Have we stopped careing for dementia patients unless we can sell their homes from under them first. Have you forgotten you are paying through national insurance  for your NHS care if you where paying privetly they wouldn't ignore you they be saying yes sir no sir three bags full sir ,

you are paying demand your right to be treated fairly without delay.

goverment guidelines mean nothing to them except a promise they can not fulfill

the NHS is under enormous preasure to meet those guidelines and therein lies the problem they are far to busy jumping to gov dictat as to take there eyes of the waiting list first priority is gov then us.

I rang my consultant's secretary and she was  lovely but I'm not holding my breath yet.  I told her I've been off work with my hernia and that it's agonising.  I asked if I was on waiting list and she said no.  I had to see the doctor first as the original doctor I saw didn't work there any more!  Then I pointed out when I'd been referred and said that I cannot wait this long as I'm in so much pain.

She is having a word with the consultant and will get back to me.  When she looked at my records, she did seem very sympathetic.  I'm trying not to be too optimistic though

I saw the actual consultant today and what a difference this experience was compared to the doctor I saw earlier in the year!

I explained about the pain and he said that he wasn't surprised as there is a loop of bowel right next to the hernia. He is going to put a camera in through my bellybutton to assess the best way of repairng it and also to examine the rest of my abdominal wall as this is my 4th hernia in just over 3 years.  And the best bit is that he aims to have everything repaired by Christmas.

So now I have my fingers and toes crossed
