Painful jaw, off and on not solved by dental

About a month ago, I had a rootcanal after there being some question as to whether it was truly necessary.  I don't blame the specialist who did the work.  Several xrays did not exactly point to abcess or infection right at the time, just on and off pain under one molar, previously crowned.  It finally dawned on me after the work has been done that I am still plagued with this jaw pain that comes and goes.  I have had, in the past a diagnosed case of TMJ which resulted in wearing an appliance.  I haven't had the appliance or worn it, for a number of years.  Do you think that is the problem?  I have an abnormal fear of any type cancer so am battling all sorts of ideas.  Anyone out there able to identify with any of this?

Have you tried a warm rice bag - heated in microwave and put that to the side of your jaw.  Maybe you need your mouth appliance again.  Try gentle message by stroking downward with the heels of your hands about five times (slowly) from the area in front of your ear down to you lower jaw, to relax the jaw muscles.   Do this every hour or two.  See if that helps.  Sorry to hear about the pain.  Not sure why you would be concerned about cancer - doesn't sound like you have any lumps or bumps.  I think jaw pain is unfortunately very common, but certainly not easy to live with.

Thanks very much for your reply.  It sounds as though you've had some experience along this line.  I do believe I need to get the appliance again.  Would love for it to be less expensive!  I had guarded that thing for abou 4 years and then forgot one evening and the dog found it!  I didn't believe them when they told me the dog would do that!
