Painful leg ulcers

Posted , 27 users are following.

I have had leg ulcers for six months now, I can't take it anymore!!!! The cleaning ,changing bandages, how they look, interferes with everything I do.. I am so fed up, and the pain is so unbearable, it feels like 24/7 burning pain . I've tried a few things to help a little but it is so painful I can't even wrap it .. so I left it alone for two days and got scabs , don't know if that's good or bad ?

hi, i have had a leg ulcer for 4 years now. i have tried many different dressings but as yet the leg ulcer is still there. the non adherant foam dressing is the less painfull to remove when you need to change it. as you said the pain is unbelievable. hope your ulcer doesnt last as long as mine. Hi Marc !!!!

Four years 😩😩😩😡 !!! Omg I hope I don't have them that long !! How do you do things thru the pain??? I can't even work .. I am a mail carrier and my route is right on Beach.,. I haven't been in the sun, ocean or pool for almost eight months , I hate this !! Living in California it's not easy with leg ulcers, I hate having to wear pants outside to hide and protect them !!! You are right about the dressing, they are the least painful ...Somettimes I stay in the house on a chair all day just to not wear anything for a day ... it is so time consuming always cleaning them and everything....Do you go outside a lot with them, and how is your pain ?? How big is your ulcer after four years and how many do you have ? My family and 17 year old daughter does not understand the emotional side of it ...and the pain... good luck and thanks for responding 🏝

    Hey Coral!

How's it going? I know leg ulcers are terrible. I used to have them myself!! I'm happy to say I've been ulcer free for almost 3 years now! It does get better!! I was lucky to have an amazing dr here who knew exactly what to do. I still have the scars though. I'm embarrassed by them and end up wearing pants even when it's hot out! But at least I'm pain free! I hope you are getting the right kind of care. Just like you I feel like nobody understands how depressing ulcers can be. Good luck!

      Hey Marc,

Not sure where you are located or what kind of options you have, but for me, compression was the key. After months and months of no answers and things just getting worse I was referred to a dr who ordered compression. He had the nurse put some kind of cream(forget the name) and then wrap my leg from the knee down with this compression wrap. Every 2-3 days I went back to the nurse who took the wrap off, cleaned it up and did the whole thing over again. Every time I went, the ulcers got smaller and smaller until eventually they were completely healed. Ask about compression! The wrap is so tight that it forces blood down the leg into the wounds. Good luck!

      Hi,

Thanks for the kind words!!! I am trying so hard to be positive that they will heal but you know how the pain is 😩!!!! I'm glad you are pain free....I hard nurses come everyday to my house to wrap them and clean them, I have six ulcers!!!! But they were so rude and heavy handed with my legs.... so I stopped them and doing them myself... right now I can't handle anything

on my legs, it hurts to much and then I can't take care of my kids... thank god for my seventeen year old daughter that helps me. She hates it I'm sure !!!! She rather be at the beach surfing but I told her there's no one else..I know she understands but you know teenagers!!!! I would also love to know the cream that was used , I can't remember who commented about it... thank bye for now...

      Hi Marc!

I know what you mean about the pain, it's almost unbearable!!!! I let mine air dry for awhile and yucky yellowish scabs appeared but it feels a little better than always moist like they say .. I rather have no pain than keeping them moist with pain and supposedly healing faster... I don't know what to do anymore and doctor won't give me pain pills ....I guess he is afraid of all the laws that come with opiods... but s**t I am in pain..., sorry for the anger I am just so frustrated with the whole thing. I am so tired and done with it all...Coral

hi , there is no need to appologies for your anger , my gp refered me to the nurse who not only knew nothing about ulcers he also didnt believe me how much pain i was in,he bandaged my leg and ``it may sting a bit but DO NOT take the bandage off`` then sent me on my way . i started driving home and the pain started so by the time i was on the motor way the pail was so intense i had to stop on the hard shoulder and take the bandage off , it was rush hour and cars every where . i have now lost all respect for that particular nurse and have decided to treat the ulcer my self , but have no idea what im doing i just know it hurts. marc

They should only let nurses help us if they had painful ulcers before... it is so easy to say it doesn't hurt when they have no ideal..I want to go to a specialist they have here but my insurance won't cover it .. a specialist just in ulcers and veins....they have so many new things out there that I can't afford because I had to stop working, maybeeeee if I had a desk job I could handle it ...but I walk for a living and been doing it for 22 years... I have no other skills and before that I was in army for 10 years..this blog is about all I can do with computers, maybe I'll win the big lottery that we have then I can get the right treatment.., if I win I'll send you a ticket to see a specialist!! Wish me luck that my numbers come up on tv !!!

      Hey coral and Marc,

I wish things were going better for you guys! I kinda feel like a dick because I'm over here telling you I'm ulcer free and how easy it was. but I honestly feel your pain. If you guys aren't getting compression bandages from the dr/nurses, have you tried using compression socks? The prescription ones are about $100 but are supposed to work well. You should maybe look into that? No luck remembering the name of the cream I used but I'm gonna dig around the house and see if I can find it!

you are so right ,i find gp`s doing too much talking and not enough listening , if they have never had an ulcer before then they should be listening when a patient is telling them how much it hurts. Thank you for your kind thought of sending me a ticket for a specialist . I have put my body through hell over the years what with training etc.. but never have i experienced a pain so relentless as this.not when I was a competative bodybuilder about 20 years ago winning the welsh and british championships and not even then did i experience a pain like this. Good luck with your numbers on tv , hope your ulcer will get better soon.  marc

could you tell me the name/type of dressing that is put on the ulcer please . thanks.marc

      Hi

It's called " ADAPTIC non-adhering dressing " then i put burn cream around the ulcer to numb the skin (lidocaine) and just use regular gauze to wrap it .... that's the only thing I can handle with less pain or if it's too painful I just keep them open to the air and make sure nothing gets on them .. I tried everything compressions are to painful for me !!!!

Hi Marc. I have had a venous leg ulcer for 18 months now and I can relate to your pain and suffering. I have been seeing a Vascular surgeon Dr. Eric Farmer (Liverpool & Campbelltown NSW), who did a scan and said that I had venous insufficiently. He said to use Flaminal Forte gel and a compression stocking. He also suggested that I may need to have the vein that is causing the problem stripped from the thigh. I will keep trying the gel and the compression stocking and then see if there is any improvement. Hope that this is helpful. Take care. Sandra

HI Jack. What is the treatment that you used to be ulcer free.

      Regards Sandra

Hi Coral. I'm in the U.S. Delaware. I've been fighting a venous ulcer for over a year now. Wound care gets it healed with compression wraps, then within a few weeks, it opens up again. I am so tired of tests and scans. And weekly wound care, but I can't do it myself as I tried and it got infected. Now dr. At wound care says it might be PAD. So I'll be taking another test in a week. I'm in pain and wish I could get healed . Already had surgery a few years ago. Maybe it came undone. ??? Any ideas? Terry

      Hi Terry,

You are probably more experienced than me... I only had wound nurses come to my house to clean and dress them, they were rude and not experienced or professional at all....I stopped them from coming afaid I might punch one of them, they did not care about the pain they were causing, one even said suck it up !!!!!! I was like have you ever had one( I have six, three on each leg)..... I was in the army for 10 years and worked as a mail carrier for 22years, I think I'm a little tough, had a child natural, no pain meds.... but this pain is so intense and ongoing no relief... sorry didn't mean to vent so much .... I'm in California, Long Beach la county.... you would think since we are such a big city I would have more options.... I'm going to try the va hospital, I heard they have some kind of new oxygen therapy... wish me luck and good luck to you... keep me updated on your situation.. Coral 😊🏝

      Hi Jente

It did relieve the pain. Also yasdou have to change the dressing daily. I'm in Sri Lanka but I can't get it here. I brought some back with me and ordered online some but it doesn't go far (about 3 days) and it costs a fortune to ship it here. Now I'm using suframycin cream which a doctor here prescribed and it does relieve the pain quite a lot but not sure about curing it though. The compression stockings every day are supposed to work over some time. So hopefully you will have some relief with the flaminal forte gel. Regards Sandra

Hi Jack. Hope you are still ulcer free. What is the name of the cream that you used to help cure your leg ulcer? If you can remember it would be so helpful. Thank you. Regards Sandra

Flaminal forte isnt a pain relieving gel it helps to lift the yellow slough and destroy bacteria in the wound.

For a pain relieving dressing try actiform cool. The best way to treat leg ulcers is with compression.
