Painful LS flare up

Posted , 10 users are following.

I have been unable to control the latest flare up of LS, which has been going for some weeks now. I have a feeling the steroid ointment I have been prescribed is making things worse, as the burning and soreness seems to intensify following the use of it. I have tried olive oil, which does have a slightly calming effect but the soreness does come back. Also tried Emuaid but eventually that irritated as well. Has anyone tried Vitamin E, as in the oil from a capsule? Thinking that Vitamin E is supposed to be good for skin so wonder if it is worth a try. Any thoughts or other advice?

HI Jeannie... so sorry for the flare. It's distressing I know, when we think we've g things under control, out of the blue it's back.

well, I don't remember what you've been doing, just to confirm, have you gone zero on sugar in all forms? Whenever I backslide I know to reassess how much sugar has crept back into my diet. Also have you been building your immune system up with nutritional supplements? I finally discovered that when I run out of some of my vitamins and minerals that it only takes 3 weeks before my body gets p****d (grin). and I'll do about anything to be sure I can afford to restock the supplements that are missing - from the list that I created from reading a whole lost last year ( I posted a long autoimmune nutritional list here (my apologies if you already know this)

Some women on here have mentioned different triggers - apparently wheat is one, besides the sugar. oh! also do you know about the bathtub saok in borax powder and/or baking soda ( a large handful) really helps me...

Thanks so much for the reply Nancy. I have cut out sugar and grains just these past few days, in something of desperation. I am not sure if they affect me or not but thought it worth a try as I know others say that it helps. However, I confess to having had a wine or two - mainly to take my mind off it! Does that represent a problem, as in sugar? I will have another look at your supplements list and see if I can adopt at least some of it. Sorry for whining but some days it just plain get you down! (How long before you would expect to see an improvement with no sugar?)

      hi Jeannie j,

unfortunately all alcohol is a sugar (grin) so no. but not to despair, after we get a handle on LS and become super aware of which way our body responds to overload, then later when things settle we can include back into our diet a small amount of those offending things - I can do a bit of sugar now and then for instance. For me I don't think wheat causes probs for the LS.. but in general i feel better when I keep it at low consumption. Oatmeal on the other hand seems to be really good for me, fiber and all.

OH! if you can do nothing other than getting more Vitamin D3 into you,it will help a lot. When I first read abut that on here! it was the holidays, and hadn't even seen a doc yet.. . I took 15,000 iu a day for weeks. for me I felt less pain within 2 days! ahem I don't believe in PAIN! I'll do anything. smiles be brave, girl - it'll all be okay... well no pain is okay in my book. blessings

    Hi Jeannie,

I have had LS a few years and in the beginning was focused on what I could put on my skin to relieve the symptoms. It wasn't until I did research that I figured out that all I was doing was masking the problem. When I finally wrote down everything I was putting in and on my body each day did I figure out what I was reacting to. I compare LS to having an allergy problem. Your body is becoming inflamed because it is having an allergic reaction. Once I found that I couldn't eat Sugar, White bread or mango. I have been managing my LS without creams, oils, supplements.... All I do is monitor what I eat and my stress levels. Everyone is different, so this may work for me but not you. That is why it is important to write everything down and monitor your body closely. Also, it takes time to know what your body is telling you, it is a process. The best thing you can do is start to listen to your body. Know what signals your body is sending you to let you know it is going to flare. If I eat something that I should not have my body lets me know by making my scalp or back start to itch. If I don't listen and keep eating badly, then my labia will get a small fissure or my anus will get sore and irritated. Usually when that happens I know I have pushed my diet and I need to get back on my no sugar, no white bread diet.

Hope you find what is irritating your body, it makes a world of diffence!

Thank you for those suggestions. I am definitely going to pay more attention to diet to see if I can identify any triggers. I have always thought my diet was good, but I could be in for a surprise I guess!

All of the above, plus add a B Complex vitamin, 250mg Magnesium, and vitamin D daily to your routine. I would use coconut oil for awhile also.

I find a gluten free diet and no sugar to be the keys for me also. Might work for you also!

Thank you Jane. I will definitely try the supplements, although I have in the past thought that diet should be sufficient. In these circumstances though it is all worth a try. When you mention coconut oil - the only product I can find is solid. Is that what you are using? Thanks again for replying.

Jeannie- What type of pain did you have? I noticed burning and soreness and is this on the vulva, the perineum, or labia? I have not tried the baking soda as that is a caustic but have tried solid coconut oil, borage and olive oils, hydrocortisone with aloe, pure aloe, preparation H, Vit A & D cream and lidocaine gel. The A&D and coconut oils worked the best. Bought some fancy tiny little package of julva cream for $15, can hardly see package and it did not work at all. Have you had a biopsy? How did that go? Right now I am cutting sugar and alcohol but not all grains. Have to eat something and seem to feel better with grains. Five doctors have done absolutely nothing which is why I am on here.

I can look up medical journal articles (have free access) and it seems that thyroid antibodies are connected as well as inflammatory processes. Cytokines, IL-B and E and other markers of inflammation are also connected. I am going to post these findings when I digest them. Wishing you peace. Egg Biscuit.
