painful olonoscopy aborted

i am furious I had a colonoscopy 8 years ago which was aborted even under very heavy sedation due to pain and looping and angulation.  I saw a private specialist recently who refused my request for profanol or GA and said my colonoscopy would be fine with him! - well yesterday i had the endoscopy of stomach which went ok and then he aborted the colonoscopy due to agonising pain i felt resulting in me having 2 bags of iv painkillers aftein recovery.

He has now offered to repeat it on profonol - what is the experience of any uk patients on this this?

I had a similar experience to yours. There seemed to be a disconnect between my brain and my mouth and I was unable to ask the consultant to stop even though the pain was excruciating. My brother in the states has had a few colonoscop issues with propofol and said he had the best night'stay sleep of his life. That's what I'll ask for next time.

I had two aborted Colonoscopies 15 years apart.  The first I was told I had moderate Diverticular Disease, with the diverticula in the wrong place to pass the tube.  I was heavily sedated but remembered crying out in pain and they had to stop.

The 2nd time was last year.  Despite me telling them they had failed last time, and asking them to look up my notes, they insisted on following "official NHS procedure, which says Colonoscopy".  So I went through the prep from hell, was kept waiting two and a half hours, and saw it was exactly the same Consultant as last time.  He remembered me, checked my notes, took one quick look and aborted a 2nd time.  This time Severe Diverticulitis, with no possibility of doing a Colonoscopy.

I was referred first time for a Barium enema, and the 2nd time for a CT scan.  Fortunately I was on the 2 week urgent turn round as I was being tested for bowel cancer (all clear), so I got the CT scan within 10 days.  So I got prompt NHS treatment at no cost in the end.

If you have pain and looping, it is possible you have Diverticular Disease, where the additional bends and possible diverticula make it impossible to pass the tube.  So I suggest you ask for the non invasive option.  If he won't help I suggest you ask to be referred elsewhere.  Good luck
