PAINFUL SMEARS

I don't have good experiences with smears. My first one ever had to be abandoned as two clinicians couldn't do it without hurting me. The next routine one was a little better. However still have major problems with it. Just had one done & had this awful stretching, stinging feeling whilst the nurse was inserting the speculum. The actual sample taking is a little uncomfortable but bearable.

It's the speculum that I can't get on with! Any advise out there? Is there anything I can do / take before I have one etc? 8)

I've just had my first smear, and to start off, it was so painful (I felt a bit of a fool cos I actually said \"yeouch\" at one point!). Turns out I'm quite narrow 'down there', so the nurse had to use a smaller speculum. Have you ever asked about that? It also helped to take long, deep breaths in and out of your mouth to relax yourself. x 8) x

I think the best way to deal with a smear test is to be as relaxed as possible which is difficult under the circumstances i know. Just bear in mind that it could possibly save your life and is well worth the discomfort.
