The shooting and burning pain is somewhat normal under the circumstances, it’s seems like everyone experiences this  in varying degrees and at various times in their recovery. Sleeping is tough and you’ll have to experiment with different positions along with your pain meds. I have slept on my back with my legs elevated for a couple of days in the beginning, then I’ve slept on my side with a pillow between my legs, I’ve slept with part of my foot hanging off the side of the bed, I’ve tossed and turned and woke myself up but lately it’s been a little better. Tonight I am rubbing Biofreeze pain relieving gel on my calf and thighs to see if that helps with stiffness. Good Luck and sweet dreams!

The burning pain you describe is totally normal. I am almost 6 weeks post op and while the burning pain has decreased so much, it is still there. I manage with just Tylenol during the day and take a prescription pain pill at night.  It takes so much time to recover from this type of injury. But just know we have all been through it and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I broke my ankle in 3 places, broke my fibula and ruptured the ligaments in my ankle at the end of January. For the first 12 days post ORIF at night every two hours I would have an extreme burning sensation across the ball of my foot. The only thing that helped was to sit up and put my foot on the floor with a bag of ice under it.

I still have burning in my ankle joint but that is due to arthritis.
