Palpitations

The reason I went to the Doctor's this time with my problems ( I've been lots of times over 20 years and suspected Fibro for 7 of those years ), was because I had begun to get regular palpitations, and hot flushes, even though I'm 5 years post menopause. He prescribed Propranalol Beta Blockers, which have helped the problem a lot, and when he asked about other symptoms, I gave him the full list - joint/muscle aches and pains, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, bad sleeping patterns, etc.etc.etc., then he wrote a referral for MSK, ordered a huge batch of blood tests, and sent me home. I attended my appointment last month with MSK, who diagnosed Fibro immediately after checking blood results and reading my list of symptoms. Does anyone else suffer from palpitations ? I know my Sister does, and she was recently diagnosed with Fibro too.

Hi, yes I get palpitations every now and then. Sometimes I am breathless for a moment or two and feel that my heart has stopped. Recently I was in hospital with tachycardia and prescribed propranolol. During my stay I had at least 12 ecgs which were ok, just a fast heart rate.

Every time I wore a 24hour heart monitor from a heart specialist or  had scans they would always turn out as normal..grr...it was really not  until I was under anaesthetic  that it was picked up...:-) xx

Thanks for that ladies, I know that palpitations are common both in Menopause and also with Fibro, but they are the one thing that really makes me feel ill. I never experience any pain with them, but they are frightening. My GP wasn't too concerned about them, but having done some research this afternoon on the net, I have found out that they can be caused by Magnesium deficiency & Anaemia. I know I'm not Anaemic, nor is my Sister, because we have had lots of blood tests, so I am trying Magnesium again. I have suffered with them throughout my Menopausal years, but they have got worse as time has gone on, and I am now trying to find an underlying cause - I am sure there is something out there that people with Fibro are lacking in, and that can improve things. Many Fibro sufferers are also lacking in Vitamin D, so I am taking a D3 supplement too.

I do,,,I used to take the same meds...I now take a different one-I gave a valve problem that runs in the family...I don't really know wether it's related to Fibro,,I've had it fir 35 yrs now and Fibro diagnosed  22 yrs ago...I had a cesarean where it was picked up and I was put on meds...but I did have it a couple of years befire that...it's awful....it used to be mainly at rest...mine was diagnosed with a heart specialist as having Paramoxial Artrial  Tacicardia...??? (unsure of spelling???) it's referred to as PAT.....:-) xxxxx maybe have a heart scan..or referral to a heart specialist...will be good to see how many others suffer from the same...with it being Fibro?!!!

Hi Wendy, yes I have palpitations too. I was then diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on propanolol too. As well as fibro/CFS I also have widespread osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease and facet joint disease plus high cholestrol. I also have a vit D deficiency so have been taking D3 and I now have a little more energy. I am having reflexology but early days at the moment, but it is giving me 2/3 days per week of not needing so much pain meds if any at all which is great! X

I once had reflexology a few years ago for IBS, and it was brilliant and worked very well. Good luck with that, we just need to keep fighting back and not give in. It's like a battle sometimes, but we just have to stay positive I suppose. X

Christine - long term Magnesium deficiency causes heart problems, so I wonder if it's that which could have caused your defect ? My Doctor won't refer me to a specialist as he said Palpitations are a symptom of Fibro, and I have "only" been having them about 10 years.

Gizmo - thanks for your reply, when I was having tests, my cholesterol was a little high - 5.9 - but my BP was fine, and now I take Propranalol, it's quite low ( 119/65 ) and my pulse is around 55 when I'm resting. The more I hear about Fibro, though, the more I feel there is some sort of vitamin/mineral deficiency that causes it to be so bad. I just cannot understand why more research isn't going into this problem when 1 in 25 people suffer from it. You'd think they'd know more about it by now??

No it's not that Wendy, it's a family thing most of my siblings and parents have it too....but I just didn't know I had it till I had an operation. 34 years ago....then I was referred to a heart specialist....(but I did always have the palpitations..I felt them) I just thought it was normal..thanks for that info, I must chat to my doc about it...thanks...:-) xx

Sorry for that Christine, I forgot that you'd said it was in the family. The palpitations in my case ( and my Sister's ) started at the end of the Menopause - when I'd been symptom free for around a year or so. I just got the odd one every couple of weeks or so, then they have gradually got worse, and I was suffering around 10-15 per day when I finally went to see the Doctor. They just started creeping up on me, and were usually accompanied by a very hot sweat - something I thought I was over with.. The Propranalol do work well, but I hate taking tablets, so I am hoping that once the Magnesium gets in my system, I can ditch the drug and just use the natural alternative. I agree it's worth asking your Doctor about - mine was shocked that I had actually taken the time to surf the web for answers, because he hadn't given it a thought!! Lol!! xx

Lol, that's funny Wendy, your doc being shocked..that is soooo normal when you do your own research and go In equipped with knowledge...reckon it scares them a but....we do need to do that..don't we..take our health in our own hands like that..some doctors know absolutely nothing about all the symptoms we get from Fibro..trouble is, we get other womens issues too..and that just really confuses them...stay happy...smile xxAustralia...

Doctors are the same all over the world then?? Useless!! I have felt for many years that it's never a good thing when you have to diagnose yourself, research the illness and get a script ready before you actually go to see the Doctor these days!! Whatever happened to Doctors diagnosing US rather than US diagnosing ourselves?? We should get a percentage of their wages for doing their job for them!! Lol!! biggrin xx PS:- I'm in England.

Mine have gone away totally for now, just get the odd one, but I haven't had any since I started taking the Magnesium on Monday. Palpitations are a symtom of Magnesium deficiency, so maybe that is helping, I hope so, don't like them at all!

Hi Wendy..I don't like having them either. they are very scary..I just take in a few deep breaths, and try and take my mind  off them..
