Please help me, my doctor has today put me on Sertraline 50mg.  I have been on Citalopram for about 4 years,  and I am very reluctant to start on these tablets after the adverse comments I have been reading concerning them. Please help.

Hi Pamela, you will always read negative comments regarding med. People don't tend to post good comment, usually. This is the time for your story, don't let others negative story's stop your chance of getting your health back.

P.s  these tablets work great for me (100mg,3 years on sertaline)

Hi Pamela I have to agree with Munro ive been on the max dose of sertraline for many years and found them to be very helpful for me. Sometimes you have to go through the ring of finding the right one that suits you, as we all are unique. Good Luck jx

Hi Pamela....Like you I was on Citalopram for about 3/4 years.I stopped them in the Aumn of 2013.This Summer had a bit of a bum time and decided to opt for medication once again.I did want a different anti depressant and have been on Lustral 50 mg (brand name for Sertraline) for about 4 months now.For the first 3 weeks or so I tapered the prescribed dose down to 25 mg,to allow my body to slowly adjust to the new drug.So far...So good.Good luck with this,I know we are all affected differently.Let us know how you get on.Best wishes.Sally x x

Hi Pamela I am in a similar situation and terrified too . What taper off period and dosage were you advised to use. The replies yougotgive me some hope but I"m so scared of the reduction from escitalopram to sert and wonder how long before it kicks in after the previousmed wears off (amongst other things!)Sorry I'm not helping you out butat least we"re not alone!

Hi Rollinbob...Just read your post....I don't know what doasge of Citalopram you've been on...But if I was now on 10 mg and I wanted to taper the dose,I would do it very gradually i e :for a week 7.5 then 5 mg for a week to 10 days, then 2.5 mg for a week.Slowly and surely allowing my body to adjust.I don't know how long the gap has to be between 2 different meds, you're best to check. But I would do the same in reverse when you begin the new medication. This way it's almost a guarantee you will suffer very few,if any nasty side effects. All the best x x

Sally thankyou ,thats kind of what I decided to do good to have reassurance. I'm actually on Escitalopram 10mg have been for some time now , about 7months then prior to that several years at varying doses. Anyway it seems to have pooped out on me so GP recommende change . 1st doc thought venlafaxine or sertraline and came down in favour of the former, then another dr reckoned mirtazipine so that I could go straight on to them . Of course I did my own"research" and got more and more afraid of all meds! Eventually I settled for sertraline as the least scary, but well I dunno just terrified but can't live with this anx/dep anymore so gotta take something. Now worrying about Brands versus Generics and wether thats the prob in the first place having generic Escitalopram?! And the sert is a generic too! Isnt the Internet a wonderful thing! Anyway sorry to ramble and thanks again

I was on 20mg Citalopram  a day. My doctor said to continue them for one week and then every other day for one week then leave them off!  I have been through hell & back.  Two weeks have elapsed and he is starting me on the new tablets tomorrow.  We shall see!  Thank you everyone for taking the time to help.

    Hi

Sertraline is  really a good drug and very few people have disturbing side effects with it.Most side effects are time limited and occurs mostly in first few weeks.I totally agree with Munro. You cant make your medical decisions just by reading stuff online.

I agree with what most people are saying here. You have to try them to find the right one for you. In my case i'm on my 3rd go. Sertraline didn't work for me but only because of one side effect that i couldn't live with which only started after 7 weeks of being on it. I was completely fine on it until week 7. It could just be the one that works for you so give it a go and try not to worry. X
