Help Help Help, i have been suffering mid left abdomen and back pain on and off for the last 18 months and i feel like im going out of my mind. I have seen my local GP and a specialist Gastro consultant on many occasions with a plethora of tests all normal. In fact ive had 2 CT scans, 3 ultra sounds, camera top and bottom with numerous blood and stool tests again all normal. I seem to be fine for about 2-3 months at a time then suddenly i will have a constant pain upper left abdomen, back pain, burping, smelly loose stools with shocking bloating. I have mentioned to the Gastro consultant my concerns with referecne to a pancreatic problem and he has reassured me all the scan and tests were clear "you must have IBS!!". I havnt lost any weight and im eating normally, i have also asked for a second opinion at a different hosptial as i feel something has been missed. Please help

For sure get a second opinion. My first GP would not diagnoise me with pancreatititis until I had 3 "documentated cases", I laughed, I also have Pancreas Divisum. I have been in pain for over 2 1/2 yrs, and each day it gets worse. My new doc on my first visit blood work, my enzyems #'s came back sky high, triple norm. Anyway I just had a nerve block done for the pain, and yep didn't take. So as I sit here crying from the pain, can not eat or sleep the Cleveland Clinic told me they can not do anything else, I need to go to pain management! I'm so beside myself right now, I'm not even on any kind of pain pills now! Pain management can take me for my first visit, a consultation July 20th. It's always best to get a second opinion. Good luck to you

Hi Mark,
I think your instincts could be correct. It could be exocrine pancreatic insufficiency .. from acute or chronic pancreatitis .. and I don't honestly know if they always show up on scans.
I am fortunate to have a doctor who specializes in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. He does talks because he says a lot of doctors don't know enough about it. He didn't send me for any scans, he deduced from my symptoms (almost same to yours) and my crazy low blood cholesterol (meaning the fat I am ingesting isn't getting broken down).
Do you notice the pain after eating high amounts of fat? If so, definitely consider a low fat diet and ask your doctor (or a new one if you choose) for pancreatic enzymes like Creon.
All the best!
