Panic attacks and atorvastatin

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have been on Citalopram for a long time for panic attacks and have been fine for a long time, bar the odd occasion. However I was given Atorvaststin before Xmas because my heart risk was elevated due to the computer knowing I had turned 70 and have rhematoid arthritis. I have generally been feeling more edgy again and having more attacks. I started looking at the statin side effects and see that this can be a one of them.

Has anyone else had this problem. I have decided to stop them and see what happens. I am on 20mg dose.

Thanks for reading Jean.

I have not had this personal experienve but know statin drugs have very toxic and truggering side effects, and with RA, as well as anciety must be very proactive and in tune with the physical and mental changes that additional medications and nutrititional changes have on our systems. I have found that often this involves hormonal systems with adrenals, and that we must stay very on top of this for ourselves. I applaud you for making this decision to stop this medication, while investigating further, rathering than continuing as many dictors would have them do, until they decided they could stop.

Thank you Cheria. The bad panic attacks occured after a hysterectomy so hormonal was definitely involved at some point.

I am sorry that you suffer panic attacks. Have you had any help with the panic attacks? Strangely Panic attacks like phobias are a learned behaviour. CBT and hypnotherapy should usually tackle them.

      Thank you Hypno

A long time back I had group sessions to help deal with the panic attack. My doctor says it is probably the way I am and like needing tyroxin for low thyroid I need the citalopram to keep me stable.

My life has been full of medical probllems since a child though I am well most of the time. Parental health problems in the past and present have been very stressful too. So I think it has all joined forces on me over the last 25 years or so.

    Hi jay..

I was prescribed citalopram 10mg a day for my infrequent panic attacks and occasional anxiety attacks due to my health anxiety.

But I stupidly read the leaflet that the medication came in, and I know they say you should but by doing this the list of possible side effects scared me from even taking one tablet.

But my friend had the same problem as me, a health worrier and he took them with no hesitation and he couldn't be happier with the way it's working for him.

He did say that he had a bit of a dry mouth for the first few days but it subsided and now he feels a great benefit from this medication.

I'm still a little apprehensive to be honest but happy for my friend and anyone else who's having positive results from citalopram.

    Best wishes

    Jake
