Panic symptoms before bowel movement

Hi there

For a couple of years now I have been having a very strange happen to me, it used to happen occasionally but now it is every time I go for a bowel movement.

I will be happily going about my business or working or whatever when suddenly out of the blue I get this horrible feeling which is hard to describe, like a sinking feeling or impending doom. My fingers go tingly, I have difficulty breathing, shaky, fast heart rate...and then I need a bowel movement immediately. If I go I start to feel better after while, if for whatever reason I can't go right away it feels as if I will die.

anybody else with anything similar?

This could be because of panic attacks and anxiety. Try some relaxation therapy at home. If it doesn’t work out, consult a doctor.

Thank you for replying but it is very much a physical/ mechanical issue. I am quite relaxed other than when this happens and I have seen numerous doctors

YES! although I don’t wish this sinking feeling on any of us it’s comforting to know that I’m not alone. It was just today that I had to use the restroom and got a weak feeling like I was going to absolutely die and then I had to go and I was relieved. I’m not in good health right now as I have a bone infection in my toe and I’ve been over medicated with IV antibiotics. I think this is producing anxiety and I am getting tested tomorrow for hormones, adrenals, and other sophisticated tests from my functional medicine physician. If you’ve had any tests or therapy that is very helpful I sure would like to know… I feel that this is an anxiety issue and also related to the vagus nerve. I’ve been so worried about the fate of my toe as I can’t take anymore antibiotics and I’m just trying to get my good health back.

I hope toe issue resolves and that you will feel better soon. Please come back and let us know how your tests went. Best of luck!

Yes yes yes. You aren't alone. The same thing has been happening to me the past year or so.. Please reach out if you found anything out. It's so sad cause I wanna run away from everything I know and love when this happens.

Now my theory for MY issue is I never get that urge from behind like typical people get. Neither did my Papa, Mother or Aunt. It only starts with sharp cramping on lower abdomen. But before then its the 5-10minutes of that panic and shaky doomy feeling.. So my theory is my body is naturally relasing these stress horomones to get me to go.. Cause otherwise it would be a week or so and just stuck.

you have been missing your period for 5 months? Are you sure its menopause? Did you have hormon panel done? You may wanna see if your cortisol levels are not high and maybe mri scan of pituitary gland and adrenal gland .

Did you notice any problems with weigh gain ( esp stomach ,upper back or neck area)or any broken bones recently or muscle weakness in legs or arms or any unusual stretch marks, problems with blood sugar or high blood pressure or low potassium?

Weight gain yes, no broken bones, occasional weakness in legs, no strech markd, blood sugar has gone up and had a few days of high blood pressure but back to normal. No low potassium.

Hormonal panel all ok, except in perimenopause. Cortisol low.

I have been tested for neuroendocrine tumour.

What do you have in mind?

cushing's or pheo worth looking into . Had Similar symptoms and more . Been tested for these too . Endo said wait 6 months and test again. 24 h urine test is not sufficient need at least one more test along either ACTH or saliva test and mri focused on pituitary and adrenal glands. There is a set of specific symptoms that i listed before. You may have all of them or just one. Losing your monthly suddenly can be very indicative . I only missed mine for a month and all my hormons are where they are suppose to be . im not perimenopausal .Its very difficult to diagnose and lots of doctors dont even know how to approach it , some never heard about it , but my bet is OCD and thats what all of my doctors say . Have been diagnosed with it and on medication and waiting for therapy.

When you say OCD are you refering to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder? or does it also stand for something else?

      thanks for your input

I think I have a Peptic Ulcer. I don't know why any Doctor has been unable to suggest this. It's even written on my medical notes as "symptoms indicate peptic ulcer" but nobody has discussed the possibility with me. I came across an article which explained that Ulcer symptoms are aggravated by leaning forwards and also eating, which matches my scenario. I've been getting terrible bloating and dizzy spells when I cycle, lean forwards during gardening or even lean forwards in the shower.

Early indication is that the latest CT is revealing nothing, which would be expected for an Ulcer as they are not typically revealed on a CT. I'm not certain why it was missed on the gastroscopy.

Now that I've been on the Lansoprazole for about 2 months, things are starting to settle down again, I've been taking Gaviscon dual-action tablets or 10ml of the Gaviscon liquid 4 x a day and Magnesium hydroxide (Milk of Magnesium) 10ml 3 x a day and I'm really starting to feel a lot better. I find if I take them in the morning, before I shower and before bed, it really helps.

The article also suggests taking Sucralfate syrup (aluminium hydroxide and sulphated sucrose) which seems to go by two names in the UK, either Antepsin or Carafate - 10ml 4 x daily. This is prescription only in the UK, so I am enquiring with the doctor regards this drug, and whether I can be accurately diagnosed as having an Ulcer.

I think it can take a few months before the Ulcer heals. I was on another drug for a skin condition prior to coming down with these symptoms and that drug is known to cause stomach upset. So my suspicion is that I developed the Ulcer and since I've not been treating it with the appropriate medications or quantities, it has never healed.

If it is an Ulcer, I am floored as to why all of the Doctors I have seen -- and there have been numerous -- have been unable to suggest this as a diagnosis.

When did you have the gastroscopy done?

    • Posted

It should have been approx November 2020. I came down with this illness in June 2020 and asked to be seen straight away. They found nothing on the gastroscopy. Maybe the Ulcer is too far down, or they simply missed it. Im speaking to the dr today to ask how i get formally diagnosed. I dont want another gastroscopy that's for sure!

I'm afraid you don't know me at all to be able to make that comment.

You right , i don't know you at all , but I know all your symptoms all too well. It is anxiety, the sooner you realise it the sooner you'll feel better.
