Panic symptoms before bowel movement

Hi there

For a couple of years now I have been having a very strange happen to me, it used to happen occasionally but now it is every time I go for a bowel movement.

I will be happily going about my business or working or whatever when suddenly out of the blue I get this horrible feeling which is hard to describe, like a sinking feeling or impending doom. My fingers go tingly, I have difficulty breathing, shaky, fast heart rate...and then I need a bowel movement immediately. If I go I start to feel better after while, if for whatever reason I can't go right away it feels as if I will die.

anybody else with anything similar?

You described it perfectly. I have the same problem. I'm absolutely fine one moment, and then this anxious, panicky feeling slowly—but steadily—arises. And it's important to mention that these feelings occur before I even get the urge to go (ten minutes or so). That's where it gets confusing. It took me a long time (a few years) to relate one feeling with the other. Hindsight is truly 20/20. Often times, I'd take something for the anxiety, relieve myself, feel fine afterwards, but end up tired when the meds kicked in! Unfortunately, sometimes things have to occur over a set period of time to understand and allow a pattern to develope.

I always had a nervous stomach since childhood, but the problem was in reverse. I'd get nervous about something and then get the urge. Most of the time, these days, it's the other way around.

*I have fibromyalgia and thought maybe that could have something to do with it.

      Hi Jenn,

I replied to your message back in the day but now as I was re-reading the post the reply doesn't seem to be here, strange...as you mention in your post, these feeling start a few minutes before the bowel movement, so it does make it difficult to identify. It wasn't until I had a very scary episode where it was very clearly related that I started to put 2 and 2 together.

How are you doing these days?

      Hi there,

For some reason I missed your message. How are you doing? Has this been happening to you for a long time? It's so horrible. Do you have any thoughts as to why this might be happening to you?

Dear, thanks for the post. I had severe throat infection and had extreme Antibiotics treatment done till July 2019 and since this is started. Actually my IBS started as well after that. When I first had this panic attack, I was shocked and remember that i took the photo of my 9 year old daughter with tears in my eyes ( i still have tears when writing now !). I thought i'm done, i wanted to close my eyes and sleep and thought everything might become alright. The body didn't allow me to sleep or lie down. Then i relaised that i have not had food for more than 24hrs ( thanks to severe indigestion and nausea feeling), due to this there was a huge gas build up in my stomach. Then quickly went to find some food and after few mouths full, got better. Then afterwards I had this for every day for 2-3 weeks in the afternoons, even after taking food, which really confused me. Finally, I realised that 'burping' gave the relief.

My conclusion, due to some reasons (constipation? or bowel issues) there is a huge gas build-up in our stomach. When this gas does not find a way out (fart or burp) this gets build-up and may be pushes the diaphragm, causing chest pain. The gas also gives giddiness, because of the strain on your heart, may be the blood veins to the heart are also stressed (please note I'm not a doctor). Whatever the case burping gave me relief, as I usually do my BM in the morning everyday and if i get this panic attacks I may not be able to do BM. I tried to do some sit-ups to get rid of the gas. I guess the best thing is BM if you can do so. I have to talk a lot about my IBS issues, but would do so in other threads.

I wanted to just ask if this attack is predominant if there is constipation? or in general?

      Hello @MP1979

In my case I don't have constipation, quite the opposite in fact, I poop a lot, but what I do have is a lot of gas and also when I poop even though it's soft it's difficult to pass because it's sticky.

The other day I went to the osteopath and he reckons it's a problem with my back and diaphragm, they press on the phrenic nerve when the bowel is ready to empty.

I was 43 when my first episode of this occurred. trip to the ER thinking heart attack. It is just as you said too, like the bowel is causing the anxiousness. I also noticed that I get strange sensations, like vibrations, in my abdominal into my chest area when I go to bed sometimes. Like the nerves are in spasm.

      Hi Mark,

Do you have any ideas on why this might be happening? have docs suggested anything?

I apologize so few people are actually reading your post and understanding what you’re saying. This is a feeling before the BM hits. I do believe this is linked to blood sugar levels dropping and water levels rapidly changing in the body (in the intestines and gut) before going to the bathroom.

I have checked my blood sugar right before a bm and it drops lower some and then after bm it changes some.

I am not diabetic but I do have hypoglycemia. i am sensitive to water changes in my body and insulin spikes.

And that feeling of doom is most likely blood sugar levels dropping imho. Blood sugars can also correct themselves once you get enough hydration & your body normalized ( if you are not diabetic .)

fortunately the doom feeling passes quickly! take care.

Thank you very much for your reply, you know what you say is very interesting because I find that if I have some sugar after I recover faster, in fact I have now taken to have sugar sachets on me and always have a bit of sugar after. Do you have any suggestions as to how to prevent this from happening?

      Thank you!!

It sounds like you are having a nerve response to the upcoming bowel movement. It is called a vagus nerve and there are areas in the bowel which can be triggered. I have had these for years, and a physical therapist helped me understand just what was happening and why. I sometimes feel dizzy and off, then the belly tells me it is time to go. Always feel better after. Try to breath thru it and know you will feel better soon.

Thank you very much for your reply. Do you have any idea why this suddenly starts to happen or if there is something that can be done about it?
