Panicking after Google search

Why do I do this to myself. I came across an article and I'm confused as to what the following paragraph means.

"The authors observed that progression to SCC was shorter when the precursor pathological process was differentiated VIN (28 months) compared to when it was Lichen Sclerosus (84 months). According to previous studies by the same authors, up to 33% of differentiated VIN progressed to SCC compared to the 3-7% as cited earlier for Lichen Sclerosus"

I realise its not the whole article but I know I can't post web addresses here. I'm confused and slightly concerned. LS turned malignant after only 7 years in the patients they studied? Am I interpreting it wrong? Sorry I hope my post makes sense.

    Hi Dani, I am totally confused, I didnt understand any of it, my Gynae just told me if I have any change down there go and see my GP as it might be suseptable to cancer more than usual,but it doesnt mean you will get cancer,

    What is SCC? and VIN ?

      Hi vin is related to vulva cancer but comes in 3 stages vin 3 being most related to a true cancer which I have been diagnosed with myself and I have to have what they call a partial vulvectomy to remove white cells similar to cin3when u have an abnormal smear test vin is a very rare for of skin.cancer which sadly not enough women are made aware of like myself

    There is all kinds of information on the Internet. I believe the following. If you research symptoms on the Internet, you will eventually believe you have or are likely to get cancer. Ignore the article and go see your doctor if you are concerned. That is my advice. Information on the Internet can be useful and it can also create a sense of panic.

    There are women on this forum that have had LS for 10, 20, 30 and 40 years with no occurence of cancer. Eat right and take care of yourself...and keep your regular doctor visits. Also, if you notice a change in between visits, make an appointment to put your mind at ease.

    LS doesn't "turn" malignant.  We all have cancer cells in our body that our immune systems keep in check.  LS is an autoimmune system disorder.  The LS affected areas get weakened against the ever present cancer cells and lose the fight.

      I hope you mean and 'sometimes' lose the fight.  We do not all develop cancer in fact very few of us that treat ourselves properly will develop cancer.  From what I understand it is most likely those that go untreated that will develop the cancer.  Hence the steroid type treatment being important to use.

      Actually there are some who use Natural methods to treat their LS.  I think the important thing is to prevent the itching and soreness as much as possible by any means that suits you.

      Yes I was referring to how cells lose the fight when they become malignant.  Not all LS becomes malignant, but with LS you always have infammed cells so pap smear test results are usually "abnormal".  So, if an LS patient does get cervical or vaginal cancer, an actual biopsy and cancer blood assay is the only way to be sure.
