Paraesophageal Hernia Repair

Has anyone here had hernia surgery for a paraesophageal hernia? At least one third of my stomach has entered into the diaphragm. Surgery is scheduled and I am extremely nervous. Was told it would be 8 weeks before eating solid food is allowed. Groan!

    Hi Cheryl,

I had op on my hiatus hernia last Tuesday.

80% of the stomach had pushed through the hernia and was also twisted.

One week in and I'm on the 'liquid only diet' for another 7 days.

So, ice cream, jelly, yogurt, soup, meal supplement drinks, milk... Etc.

To be honest you don't feel hungry. If someone put a meal in front of me now I couldn't eat it.

Pain wise, worst is in shoulders and neck - trapped gas and expected. The stomach itself isn't very painful so far.

Bloated, gassy, gargily and a bit uncomfortable.

Energy levels are a problem. Tire very quickly but equally sitting doing nothing doesnt help either.

Literature I have is for liquid only for 2 weeks, then can introduce things like cereal (soft), pasta, eggs....

Stick to sloppy diet for 2 weeks then try lighter foods

I don't intend on trying bread or other heavy food for at least 6 weeks

Thanks for replying. That is one huge hernia you had. Was it emergency surgery? Can't imagine how you could even breathe.

Sounds like you are doing really well. Really no desire for food? I hear this a lot but won't believe it if/until it happens. I was told about the shoulder pain but that sounds doable.

No idea why different doctors require different diets. Mine is 3 weeks with only protein drinks and water, nothing hot or cold. Groan! Trying to think of different ways to make a protein drink exciting but....

Wasn't given much hope that the next stage of liquid diet would be more than yogurt, cream of wheat, etc. but no pastas, eggs and such. Perhaps age and health status play into this. You may be a lot younger.

Good luck to you and wishing you a quick recovery.

Would you mind elaborating on what liquids you were allowed. You did mention milk, yogurt, and protein drinks. I am guessing the soup had to be a plain liquid broth? Were you told not to drink hot or cold drinks? Thanks.

Hi there, I had an endoscopy 3 days ago after 8 years on omeprazole for acid reflux and the report they gave me revealed a 'moderate' paraoesophagal (rolling?) hiatal hernia. I am speaking to my GP tomorrow but don;t know whether he will suggest surgery or not - things have been getting worse this year with bloating, cough and fullness and I have increased my Omeprazole dose to 40mg/ day. Do you think I should push for surgery? Don't know what 'moderate' means either...I had 3 pregnancies and 3 c sections and they think it might be related to that.

Didn;t realise how long the recovery time was! Good luck with your surgery, hope it makes a difference:-)

I am betting the surgeon will suggest operating on this. If not and you are not comfortable with the decision, my suggestion would be to get a second opinion.
