    Hi Pauline,

I am not sure what you are asking ... What is the issue with your hip?  Do you have OA and are you in pain? What does the x-ray show and what is the orthopedic surgeon advising ?

congratulations on losing the weight !!!!

    big warm hug

Welcome to the forum! I think you need to ask your consultant what the success rates of a partial resurfacing surgery. My consultant is not a fan at all, when I suggested it in

the early days (I was trying to avoid a replacement due to fear) he said the success rates were very low, and you need a replacement in the end anyway.

It also does nothing at all to help the loss of cartilage. I am not sure what the condition of your hip is, or what your consultant can do, but the key is to know how many have worked in the medium to long term and make your decision based on that.

I think you are talking about resurfacing, which has been deemed by the NHS not overly successful in women

Correct - Maggie is right. My consultant said as much. Resurfacing is sometimes more successful with men. I remember him saying something about the crumbling nature of women's bones from middle age - sorry it was a long time ago so can't recall exact detail, but many consultants have stopped offering resurfacing to female patients altogether so I would consider it carefully, it is quite invasive for a temporary result.

thankyou all   sorry to be vague       Im repeateedly put off as  the cartledge loss shows  minimal on x ray    they dont seem to want to  review scan

frustrating at best as pain still here but managing a lot better since weight loss, I didnt see  my  usual  consultant, he mentioned this thought to me  at last appointment in sept,    I go again in FEB    I was keen to see how I felt after weight loss  due to the fact I am repeatedly told

    the wear is tiny

I am too young at 61  to replace totally due to the lesser extent of it

because  it may  mean  possible 2nd surgery in ten years as I am active and dancer -   difficult one as I dont want to compromise too much - point being that the more I use a new joint the quicker it will wear out

I was prepared to have full surgery  but not offered it as option

fed up as  its been a long time now  but yeah, life better as can walk so much further and geting fitter again  with pilates and  cycling

standing up after sittng is the worst thing   and having a ;bad day'  I may need to find a seat   so am I the same as you Id love to know if poss?

    love px

p.s. Darcy Bussels has had resurfacing  she is under 50        Craig R  has had a total hip,  both dancers

Pauline - sorry it is difficult for you and that the consultant isn't helping too much.

I personally would request an MRI which will show you exactly what is going on - some problems can not be seen just by X-ray. So that would be my first request.

Secondly my immediate thoughts are that many of us were put off, told we had ten years whatever - and the whole thing degrades very fast, particularly if you are very active. I was a dancer in my young years and really have paid the price now. I had my replacement ten months after being told I had years of use left (!!) keep pushing for an answer if your life is being blighted. You don't need to be completely bone on bone before it really becomes a problem, I found that out to my cost - I waited far too long in the end...wish I had done it sooner I really do.

Losing weight can help but ultimately if it is a mechanical problem it is unlikely to go away. If you can still do most of the things you enjoy I wouldn't have any surgery, but if it erodes your life or causes unacceptable pain then it is time to be assertive about your problems in February.

Also just a point to consider I have been told to expect at least 35 years or more from my hip replacement - I am only 40 so this was a key issue for me - which means yours almost certainly would see you through.

Ps Darcey Bussell is now having a full hip replacement I seem to remember - according to reports at the end of last year - she is late forties I think.

    p.s.

the consultant did say he prefered x ray  to scan?

I am not sure if you are in the UK and using the NHS but there has been a running thread, and school of thought (not in all cases but in some) that it is possibly a money saving exercise to put patients off initially, those with a real problem will always be straight back.

Only you can say if the pain is very very bad and/or seriously affecting your quality of life, but general rule of thumb is that unless your hip is in a very very bad way and can be seen on X-rays etc you are unlikely to get the green light for a replacement. My auntie was in agony and was told it wasn't too bad, had the replacement by insisting on one ( she had had a previous hip replacement so knew the form) and the surgeon said it was far worse than the X-ray indicated. Hence the need sometimes for MRI.

Having said that, I wouldn't even consider hip replacement unless you desperately need it, it is major surgery with some possible serious complications. If you are exercising and doing most or even many of the things that make you happy and your life enjoyable, I would wait and see . Have some physio and look after it.

    Hi again rosie

I had  MRI  scan   jan 14        -   the hospital that did it said  there was no cartledge  bone to bone   but this was a mobile MRI and my sphysio  didnt rate the  clarity of hte  scan  as she has read many,  and wanted me to go to different hospital MRI   but my GP was adamant their contract was with them, so  I   have doubts about the result  and to confuse picture I got 2nd opinion at another hospital and they looked at this scan and  thought it did show some bone to bone,  so you see,  a lot of confusion   however I will ask for MRI  at this hospital  in Feb,  as the physio said theirs reads clearer

yes Im sure its to do with putting you off and costings,    Iv beenlike this nearly 5 yrs now but was worse  earlier than now after  physio and osteopathy.      my groin pain  much less   the pain  goes down  side of leg and  below knee   although I did have MRI on back at the same time  requested by me,  and that showed up all good??

so you see,  its been a bit of a confusing mess   my GP sent me to the Pain clinic to learn to live with it  as said there wasnt evidence of anything in particular!    Ive had depression  and she thinks  that route  as there seems to be  a big link between  joint pain and  depression,   Iv always believed in  the  emotions afffecting  Physical anyway

i will try dancing soon,   but I cant ever be sure I can  go for a walk without having to sit on somebodies wall!  I struggling to stand after sitting  as very stiff,  the stgeroid injection was amazing and the stiffness went for one month,  no use in repeating as wears off and its not gfood for bone but really, this did indicate it is from hip     the injecdtion was in the groin

so thats it really   I think Il stop putting up with things, I do tend to be perservering type      my wories were keeping afloat  if off work for a long period   x

.....my reply is waiting to be modified??

but  thanks again   Renee   yes  I am stiff so it must be OA   no real diagnosis    from anybody!   told by GP  MRI  and xray  showing  nothing  particular  but on 2nd opinion at another hospital they looked at the MRI and thought it did show some  degeneratkion.

aware they put you off for tghe cost,   my life has changed dramagtically over last 5 yrs     sent to pain clinic to learn to live with it   and something changed inside of me then,   Im stiff agoiny  standing up  but I do mind over matter a lot,  pain down leg can be excruciating

when I go in Feb  Il ask for MRI  at their hospital  and be assertive for sure.  I feel depresssed these days and  'old'  x

    thanks again    great support  x
