I had the right side of my thyroid removed in my early 20s i am 54 now. I have been experiencing some symptoms for the past 2 years but my test all come back within the normal range until this last one. My tsh levels were low .43 my t4 free was 1.3. I have never taken any thyroid medicine. What does this mean? Should i see an Endo ?

Hi Mona , sorry a few year late to reply..
I also had a partial Thyroidectomy in my 20s. I become Hypothyroid in early 40s. I have felt crap ever since, I think the GPs were testing only my TSH not realising they should do full panel of Blood test, I have been on Levothyroxine and all it has done for me is stop me sleeping 24/7 I have every hypo symptom possible, from brain fog, slow metabolism, nails won't grow, hairl loss, fatigue no energy, hair nails don't grow, body aches, back ache, I spend many days in bed, since taking L thyroxine, I went to the Gps to say about my aching, I got told it was my age I was 42 at the time, that year my periods stopped i was told early menopause, I just excepted the GPs knew what they were talking about,
I then was put on anti depressants as was told my low energy was depression ! these only made me lazier but I suppose I cared less on them and was so longed out I couldn't be bothered the DR to say I i was not having a quality life, eventually Me as I am strong minded stopped them with out telling the Dr too which he told me I should never have done, my guess is he wanted me kept quiet and not complain of the symptoms i was having as he didn't have a clue how to treat me....the results of stopping Anti ds them I woke up a bit and things were no longer blurred out quite so much, by this time I also got severe oedema, which was given water tablets for , I could hardly move so from being a size 8 to a size 20 was so depressing and dieting did not work I didn't even eat a lot, in fact I ate nothing all day and one evening dinner which was small and healthy so no way should i have been this large ! By this time I was really depressed because of my size i had become ( who wouldn't be depressed at that ? )
Thyroid was not checked or if it was maybe they only did TSH which is no good for thyroidectomy patients !
ANwya this time i was sent to psychologist and a physchaitirist for my low energy,,and with all my symptoms zero energy, I was told I had ADHD/ADD and given Dexamphetamine and the tablets helped me get motivated and I managed to lose a couple of stone so i was a bit happier i was able to function better although still not normal the amphetamine gave me enough energy to actually get up !, anyway many years on, by the way not once did the GP do full thyroid bloods on my Thyroid as they may have discovered it wasn't ADHD/ADD but it was the Levothyroxine not converting !. i few year later wrote down all my symptoms and was put on HRT bearing g in mind I had gone through the change about 7 years and finished all hot flushing etc I but was put on HRT as they said that was my problem , although the HRT does allow me to move my arms and the muscles i use will now keep muscle as before HRT the muscle never built up , but then that doesn't surprise me as Levothyroxine has kept me bed ridden most of the time..HRT has many symptoms very similar to low thyroid so I guess they thought that was my problem and gave me that,
I have found out GPs lack a huge amount of knowledge on Hypothyroid so we are left to suffer, I ached so much and in some parts of my body I was given steroid injections which only last about 5 weeks on me.. I went to a physiotherapist for my pain and she told me I had zero reflex in my knee, i then read that this is a sign of hypothyroid i read low body temp was a sign also,I started doing body temp every morning before getting up I found that at times my temp was near or was between 34.1c- at highest 35.8c which is another sign hypothyroid, no wonder i could never get warm.
Not so long ago pharmacist changed my brand of Levothroxine to one called new formula Tevo. i became really ill and yellow flagged the Tevo and this is when i started researching the thyroid, and found that I must not be converting Levothyroxine T4 into T3, which is very common on people who had part thyroidectomy years ago and had iodine in there treatment. they do a drug called T3 for those who still have hypo symptoms and are not getting better on LKevothyroxine alone,, someone or anyone failed to let me try this drug along the line so since i was diagnosed my life has been crap and got even more crap over the years, I have missed my 40s because of the ignorance of GPS I am really not happy about missing what should of been the best part of my life. ( life begins at 40) mine died at 40 and went down hill after !
.I have suffered with dreadful symptoms since i was diagnosed being hypo which I found out as all the symptoms i had when diagnosed was i couldn't stay awake i didn't ache i was thin, i had loads of energy before starting levothyroxine. but since having Levo my life has been crap, i no longer want to socialise, i just cant be bothered with anything and was getting tired if i did one small task, say tidy the kitchen I would have to go back to bed exhausted and that was me till the next day and bear in mind I was on amphetamine i should of been able to do a bit more than that, always Drs told me it was my age ! as I had stopped going out I never bothered to ask my non hypothyroid friends did they feel useless and ache like i did, but u have now found 70 yr olds that function better than me so now know it is not my age . the last ignorant Gp i went to said all these symptoms are probably you need HRT I replied "Doh I'm already on HRT "oh he said " then it could or maybe Fybromagelia then* I replied I know its my thyroid I do not have Fybro and I don't need another Label and pretty sure that label is for we can not be bothered to do any further investigation ! I want to try the T3 drug.. he said Fybromagelia has a test it tests reflexes and if they are sensitive its Fybro, well I told him I have no reflex I am def hypothyroid I'm not converting levothyroxine i need T3 drug Ive read about that changes peoples lives which is needed due to having thyroidectomy iodine intake,, anyway he gave me a referral to Endocrinologist
I am now on a mix of Levothyroxine (T4) and Liothyronine (T3) and although not completely back to normal, I may need more T3 added I am feeling more human , losing weight, I have hair growing back and my nails are growing and I can do more than just clean one room up... so please if you feel ill when you get given Levothyroxine (T4) please ask them to add Liothyronine in with it.. please don't live your life being fobbed off. I have lost 14 years of my life due to ignorant GPs.. good luck ,, I bet yo have discovered your results were you were Hypothyroid by now ,, it looks like your GP like mine went on a low TSH ,, thinking you was hyper.. but not gone on T4 T3.. or like me I had high reverse T3 which made me very hypo.....
sorry about grammar and typos but i cant help being a bit thick xx
