I had spiral fracture in my tibia and fibula.

its been 5 weeks since the surgery, I had ORIF, tibia rod, plates and 14 screws -I am still in a fibre glass cast to the knee.

Can anyone advise how long til I should be PWB (can i do this in the cast, its not at 90 degree angle) and can start physio, does this get referred by the NHS orthopedic clinic where i have my outpatient check ups. My doc hasnt been forth coming with what to expect...

I had ORIF with plate and 6 screws one side and 2 screws the other side 16 weeks ago. I wouldn't weight bear until your Dr gives you the go ahead. I went from cast to boot at 6 weeks post op and was told to pwb building up to fwb after 2 weeks initially using 2 crutches, then one and finally just the boot. It's taken me 8 weeks to build up to no wAlking aids, just wearing trainers now . I was referred to NHS physio at the 6 week consultant appointment and had first session about 2 weeks later. I've supplemented the NHS physio with also seeing one privately as I had private medical insurance through work. Of course every ones injury is different and different Dr's will have different ways of working. The key thing I've learnt on his journey is to be patient and take (literally) one step at a time.

everyone is different with healing. i wouldn't do anything without doctors permission. the x-rays shows how the bones are healing. the best thing now is to do physical therapy with a specialist. that way you will not damage your ankle . you will most likely be in the cast for two weeks then you will be in a boot. be patient for the most part
