Tina I think from reading this blog that being followed up by a Hemotologist and a Pulminary specialist is a good idea for anyone that has had a PE.  I am sorry no one ever told me that but people on this site that have been the most proactive seem to be going to both a hemotologist and a Pulmonary specialist.  If I had this to do all over again that is what I should have done.  In addition they are asing their  doctors to set them up with a PE recovery plan.  I am in the US in New York.  I have been breathless for years, without the sharp pains. A vascular Pulmonary Hypertension specialist (he is also a cardiologist)  has just told me he believes my problem comes from scar tissue in the lung from the original clot in the lung.  He will be doing a lung scan to see if thaat is what it shows and discuss removing it, or treating it once he sees the scan.

    Hi Tina,

Yes, I had a great deal of pain when I had my first and second sets of PEs.  I was told the pain is when the clots hit the pleura. Don't know if that's correct just what I was told.

What I do know is that I doubt paracetamol will touch it. I was given intravenous morphine and even that took a fair bit. For the second set, they gave me oral morphine and that worked like a charm. After the initial pain, it got less and less until now (6 months on), it is an occasional dull ache.

Whatever you do, don't double up the painkillers and take too much paracetamol!

    Hi Tina

I have been taking ibuprofen whilst on rivaroxaban but st the beginning when I had pneumonia as well i was on co-codamol and ibruprofen and then paracetamol and ibuprofen which is what the doc at the hospital tried.

I would check..... I took them at 2 hourly intervals I. E. Paracetamol then 2 hours later ibuprofen etc.

    It did help.

    Hope the pain eases soon.

    Sam
