Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Mirena IUD, Vaginismus

I'm going to make this as short as possible. I had a Mirena Coil inserted under General Anesthetic on 28th Feb 2017. Soon after I developed Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (this was diagnosed as I had to go to A&E) Unfortunately, I do have Vaginismus therefore- swabs, speculums, transvaginal ultrasounds, intercourse, tampon insertion are all impossible. So the only way to test for anything was through bloods and urine samples. I was given IV antibiotics and also 2 weeks worth of 3 different types of antibiotics (Doxycycline, Metronidazole and Cefelaxin) I had to return a week later as I was still experiencing the same excruciating pains. I was then told that one registrar had finally agreed to remove the coil under general anesthetic and that I was to wait for a letter with a theatre slot. I then had a call last week and was told that they had changed their mind and they were no longer willing to remove under GA due to the risks of anesthetic. More like they don't want to fork out the money for it. I am still suffering with excruciating pain and most days I am almost bed bound, this is affecting my life on a daily basis and if only it was as simple as going to the GP to have it removed in office, I would have done. I feel terrible as nobody talked through the side effects of the IUD with me, I was just pressured into having it inserted 5 minutes before my operation (laproscopy and hysteroscopy) my point is, do I have a right to force them to remove the IUD? it is my body, so surely I do. I am worried about the long term damage caused by PID and to be honest, no one has followed up with me to do tests to see if I still even have it. All I know is that I'm suffering with severe abdominal/pelvic and back pain (not appendix as I've already had that removed!) it is definitely routing from the IUD or the pelvic inflammatory disease caused by the IUD. I need this removed ASAP, I am due to start a new job in 2 weeks and there is no way on this earth that I will be able to keep hold of my job if I am to be in this state. I cannot believe I have been refused help. We only have one hospital here so limited with options. We pay our taxes and pay into the pot, yet we are not allowed to take from it. I cannot believe the gyn inserted the IUD having known my history and background, knowing fully well I cannot have swabs or speculums which would have meant I would not be able to have it removed in an urgent situation- I would HAVE to be under some sort of anaesthetic. Please ladies, let me know of how important it is that I have this removed as soon as possible? I am trying all that I can at the moment but it's proving really difficult. It's even gotten to the point where I have had to contact Bayer the manufacterers of the Mirena IUD to ask for advice and help. Getting really ridiculous now. How can health care "professionals" do this? I am in such agony.

You could ask your GP to refer you to a private Gynae surgeon for a second opinion and advice if you can afford the private fee! It varies from area to area so can't tell you how much. What did Bayer say? rolleyes

Hi Laura, first off I’m awful sorry to hear this! How they can not remove the IUD for you is absolutely insane! They can’t expect you to live in a world have pain, I see you wrote this a while back so I’m curious to see if they did actually take it out in the end for you?

Also I’ve been suffering with pain in my right side off pelvis area, I’m awaiting a ultrasound and have had swobs taken which I’m awaiting results, from my symptoms I’m presuming it’s PID. As I also have a IUD placed 5 weeks ago now!

Could I ask what the pains are like or how often you get them, as mine are contraction like pains but only in the right pelvis side that last anything from 10-30 seconds!
