Pelvic muscle cramps and urinary urge

Posted , 5 users are following.

Does anyone experience/recognize this? Whenever I go somewhere, especially by car, my pelvic floor muscles start tensing/cramping, which, when it is bad, causes a sudden urge to urinate. This causes anxiety and panic attacks. The same thing also often happens during the night. Then I wake up like that.

I have been on 50mg sertraline for a couple of weeks now, which needs time to start working.

Has your dr suggested a referral to a urologist to check for interstitial cystitis. Sertraline can exacerbate the urinary problem and it is hard to understand how it could possibly help. Sorry. If  google ic interstitial cystitis you will understand your signs and symptoms. Take care

I’m literally dealing with this , went to the doctor two days ago told me I have uti

It isn't ic or a uti. I have an overactive pelvic floor due to all the stress I have been having since last year. This has resulted in muscle cramps which irritate the bladder. And these cramps come in attacks...

Ren, are you a girl or a guy?

I ask because my brother has terrible problems with pelvic floor tightness.

He always says he feels he is wearing a 26" belt on a 30" waist.  He had done tons of physical therapy and spends all day doing the home floor exercises to no or little avail.

His quality of life is zero.

Thanks for any sharing of your information on this subject!

I am a woman. And it's really frustrating because I have this on and off without a clear reason except stress and anxiety.

Has your brother tried anything else besides PT?

I used to have IC but, over time, it seems to have subsided.

Stress made it a zillion times worse.  When I'm home I only urinate every 4 hours or more but if I'm stressed (going out on a sunny day is one of the things that I get very anxious about - i.e. I hate summer!) I will feel I have to go quite often.

When my IC was acting up I had a terrible pelvic pain like menstrual cramps - if you look on the IC network (a great site - so helpful - what a community!) dealing with the pain is one of the worst things about IC - that and the urgency and frequency, of course.

Some people (men can get it too) become completely housebound.

I used to lie in bed on my left side with a heating pad listening to a relaxation tape when the pain was raging.

As I didn't get IC til post menopause I had a problem with vaginal dryness - this included the urethra area and environs so I began taking small amts of Estrace topically or with an applicator.

Eventually I calmed down that inflamed tissue.

Every now and then if I feel I'm getting the urge to go too often - I take a wee bit of baking soda in a big glass of water - that chases the urge away as it diminishes the inflammation.  It can raise your BP so you have to be stingy with the baking soda -like a 1/4 or 1/2 a teaspoonful

    I hope this was helpful!

Ooops!  I forgot - there is a big list of what not to eat, drink,do, etc. on the IC Network.  Its very diet sensitive but it seems each person has to find out their particular bete noir  - like citrus or wine or cranberries, etc.

Late to the party but look up CPPS (chronic pelvic pain syndrome). It’s a form of prostatitis that is brought on by emotional stress. Though it can be extremely uncomfortable, it is no danger at all to your health
