Pelvic organ prolapse

Hi I have had a prolapsed uterus and bowel, went to see a gynae who fitted a ring pessary. It was 3rd one I tried, others caused pain and discomfort. this one is ok, a little uncomfortable, just feels a bit achy, is that normal, and does it get better longer you have it? also gynae has put me forward for surgery, dont know whether stitching or hysterectomy is best ( I am 54 so no more kids)!

let them take the uterus, but you have a rectocele prolapse therefore you are going to need surgery to replace it

i think the ache will ease off with time. i had several ring pessaries but mine got bigger sized with each fitting as they were not holding in place. i proceeded to an anterior and posterior repair after giving up with ring pessaries after 3 years. UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME it didn't work so 8 weeks post surgery was then needing intensive physio exercises to try to improve my situation, which lasted 3 months with slight improvement.

2 years on, my prolapse had worstened to grade 4 which was affecting my daily life. i was referred back to gynae, advised on vaginal hysterectomy this time as my uterus was also now descending. i wish i could tell you that all went well but it seems I'm not blessed with much luck and suffered post op complications by 16weeks post surgery with gross scarring internally and adhesions. i no longer have the prolapse but am left with far worse situation at this time. i am not able to have sex any more due to the adhesive band closing my vagina and suffer with daily abdominal pain with vaginal bleeding if i do anything such as a gentle walk of 15 -20 minutes! I'm still waiting to be seen by gynae for follow up and possible treatment but COVID has put everything on hold. i wish you the best of luck in resolving your problems and really hope you don't suffer the same consequences as myself. please be assured that many women have surgery successfully and hopefully you will be one of those women. I've told you my story not to frighten you but to make you aware that sometimes complications do occur with any surgery so the decision should not be taken lightly. IF you can manage your daily life with ring pessaries then persevere. good luck x

      Hi Shirley

I am sorry you have had such a rough time. At this early stage I am still not sure what to expect. My ring pessary is starting to feel more comfortable now. as for surgery, I think I will be waiting for some months due to covid which gives me time to do more research. all the best xx
