Pelvic pain for 4 months...should I be worried?

Hi! New here - have been reading some discussions and thought it would be nice to hear some advice/opinions.

4 months ago I had unbearable chronic pelvic pain which lasted 24 hours. When it had eased off I was left with a dull pain in my right abodomen and went to my GP. I was diagnosed with a urine infection, and given antibitoics which didn't help. I went back and was sent for some tests - my urine test came back 'strange' but they couldn't pinpoint what exactly was wrong. I was then sent for a scan, and was told I had a cyst and free fluid in my right side. The lady who conducted the scan however couldn't tell whether or not it was a 'normal' cyst because I was on my period, and explained the fluid could just be connected and I should just come back in three months.

They told my gp, who then called me to discuss the scan. I was given two lots of antibiotics to take for two weeks which I finished last week, and again no change. I am now being referred to a gynecologist, who I am seeing next monday.

I can't help but be worried as I have had it for so long and not had very many answers or explanations! Has anyone else experienced this?

Just to let you know I am only 21, my periods are totally fine and I have nothing wrong with going to the toilet.

Many thanks.

Glad you got the gynaecologist referral as this is the best way forward, just make sure you make a list of the questions you want to ask and a copy of this post would not be a bad idea either. Make two copies of each, one for you and one to give to the gynaecologist.

Timescale fits to watchful waiting which they do when not concerned.

In your age group many cysts resolve in three menstral cycles so are just kept an eye on as nothing needs doing unless persistent or symptomatic eg continually cause pain, bloating etc so make sure emphasise pain

Many thanks for the reply. I think sometimes when I talk to drs I forget half of what I need to say so it a great idea to print this post off to take with me.

I always write things down and they usually don't mind, just make sure you have a copy with you to give them and one for self can refer to and/or make notes on.

It's a great idea to ask for an ultrasound and pap. These are tell tell signs for ovarian and cervix issues. I've been dealing with the same thing for a couple of weeks. I'm trying my best to wait it out... lots of medical bills. At this point no one blieves I'm still hurting. Every doctor I've been too tells me to hurry up and wait.

    Keep us updated!

Ask lots of questions and be sure to get lots of answers.

    Best wishes!

I know exactly what you mean, I feel like people think I must be making it up to still be in pain after all this time! Will let you know what they say on Monday.

Thanks a lot for the reply and hope everything goes well with you too.

Hello Ayla, I had similar experience back in August, first Dr thought urine infection then appendix, then I got admitted to hospital as pain unbearable, still showing sign of infection in blood and urine tests. Then I was sent for ultrasound when 2 cysts discovered. I was told go home and wait see if they change. They haven't and now I am waiting for surgery to remove them.  Pain comes and goes mostly around my period then I am ok for a couple

      of weeks.

Do get stronger painkillers if you need them as pain can be disruptive to your life.  Keep reading these forums as you will learn so much as my experience of hospital was that I was given no information, I gained lots of support here as you will too.

let us know how you go on.

Hi, thought I would give a quick update.

I went and saw my gynaecologist yesterday. He thinks that I could be having cysts which keep rupturing, leaving me fluid in my pelvis which is causing the constant pain. I have a second scan in two weeks to see if the fluid is still present – if it is they are sending me for key-hole surgery. I will let you know how I get on. Also would be great to hear from anyone who has had anything similar happen to them.

    Thanks.
