can anyone help? this has been ongoing for a number of months. have been told by different doctors it looks normal, one doctor that it looks like balanitis and one that it looks like contact dermatitis. In terms of itchiness or pain its not painful and rarely itchy. it does however have a constant red tinge around the penis glans and around the uretha can also be red. its since spread to my thighs also but was told this was folliculitis. It started off around september and ever since i suffer with dry skin and redness on the bellend. I Got at STD check which was all clear and i havent had sex so i know its on a STI at all. Its the appeareance, dryness and redness that constantly gets me down every day. i have tried steroid creams, thrush cream, moisturisers, all of which seem to irritate it further. i am at my wits end and the doctors keep telling me its fine but it just looks awful to me! any ideas??File size is too bigFile size is too big

well, you should trust the doctors if they say it's fine because they're experts and they know when it's fine and when it's not, if its irritated maybe stop masturbating or further irritating it for a week or two, don't put any cream on it either and see if it gets any better

Have you seen a Dermatologist about this? How long did you use the steroid creams and did you apply anything else at the same time?

The best Dermatologist to see would be one that specialises in Genital Skin Disorders - if you go to a Sexual Health Clinic, either at a Walk-In Center, or a General Hospital (GUM Clinic) and briefly explain about all the Doctors you have already seen and the various things that have been tried - but you want this sorted out properly .....

thank you for the reply. i havent yet. i actually asked the doctor for a referral but he didnt deem it neccasary!? when i had the STI test it was via a GUM Clinic. at that time she told me to wash with aqueous cream which i did but it doesnt seem to have made much of a difference!? it just looks so bad to me. Like a constant red tinge and my PPP almost looks red where the skin has flared. its currently dry and peeling. not sure what else to try. if i dont apply cream it gets incredibly dry and itchy but if i apply cream it just looks red and blotchy!

Yes, you have a bit of a dilemma there: whether to apply or not to apply?!

What I am going to do is to post my full guide of what males experiencing your kind of problem need to be aware of, although I refer to this as a hygiene regime, it actually takes into consideration the broadest issues that are relevant.

I usually suggest trying to put as much of my guide in place for yourself, and I also make further suggestions as to what sources of support and treatment there are. If you like read through it and get back to me if you are not sure about anything - the guide is not aimed at you personally, but the principles are relevant to any many experiencing what you have on your penis .......

Penile Hygiene Regime to Combat Specific Problems

The best approach is not to use ANY SOAP on the Glans / Head of your penis - wash with water only EVERY time you have urinated, after sexual arousal, and ejaculation. If you are not circumcised, protect the Glans of your penis every time you take a shower by drawing the foreskin as far forward as you can, then wash everywhere else, thoroughly rinse off all the gels / shampoo and suchlike, then expose your glans wash it with the water only using the inside of your hand, then each time you have washed it you must make sure to 100% pat dry immediately afterwards with a clean towel.

After you have put this in place and you still have the situation going on you need to look at what else your penis is coming into contact with on a fairly regular basis.  The likely suspects are:-

      • any chemical compounds such as skin cream / lotions, baby oil, oil based lubes, chemicals inside condoms (e.g. easy-on and spermicides) you need to exclude these one by one to discover the culprit, the easiest approach is to exclude everything to start with, then once things are on the mend, introduce each individual item to discover what has caused this in the first place.
      • if non of these make any difference you need to look to things such as washing powder in which you wash your clothes, and underwear in, in particular.  The simple alternative to washing powder is Liquid Soap Flakes, most sizeable supermarkets stock this in their own brand names - and you use this in your washing machine instead of powders or ANY fabric conditioner type additives.

If all this produces no resolution to what you have, or your condition dramatically worsens, seek medical advice from your regular Doctor - but please note, many do not fully understand the differences between the potential skin conditions you may potentially have.  Therefore, the better course of action may be to see a Dermatologist, or alternatively, go to a Specialist Sexual Health Service and ask to see the duty Urologist.
