Hi, 3 weeks today after right thr. Am using 1 crutch but am in a bit of pain if walking any distance. Sleeping is awful with about 4 to 5 restless hours a night. Have taken off socks today as it is so warm and my husband is very worried as I was told to wear them for 6 weeks. Am religiously doing exercises but limp really badly if I try to walk at all without crutch.

    Hi Penny

You are 1 day ahead of me. I too am round the house with 1 crutch - even the odd step or two VERY carefully with none but still use 2 when out for a walk. Have managed 2.5 miles the last 2 days having gradually worked up to it but today was a real struggle. I too left my socks off today simply because hubby had to rush off to a meeting and I can't do them myself. The sky hasn't fallen in but do wonder if that's the reason today's walk was such a struggle?

    Hi Penny,

i am five weeks post Lahr....still using two crutches, as per physio's instructions, and also wearing the dreaded socks in too Friday....I was told to keep wearing them until two weeks after the injections finished.....my friend had a THR last year, and didn't wear socks at all as her surgeon 'didn't believe in them' ...she is a doctor, and didn't come to any harm     without the socks......I also read that unless your legs swell you don't really need them, so who do we believe? As far as the sleeping goes, I was like you....awful nights with very fitful sleep, i must admit it has got easier this last week, and I am managing to sleep longer and feel better for it! I think it's a bit soon to walk without the crutch really biggrin hang in there, it does get better!

I had no swelling at all, they had like ace bandages on my leg, I took that off the second day and never wore any other thing special on my legs. I am in good health, well except for the osteo arthritis. I did fine never wearing the socks.

I am 6 weeks I still have restless night's, I normally wake up about 2-2.30am and I can just about sleep on my un operated side as long as I put a pillow between knees, I normally have a read (using my kindle) I don't use crutches or stick in the house but do use the crutch or stick when out, I can't walk a mile yet, I haven't tried stairs or steps yet as I live in a bungalow, I see the surgeon on Friday for my follow up appt, also going to push about having my other hip done. Hopefully he will be pleased at the way I have progressed.

I should also add I haven't seen any physios's at all since I came out, my surgeon says walking is the best exercise, I do have a exercise bike so I will ask about using it.

    Hi Penny

Seems as though you are doing OK. I was told to always use one or both crutches as necessary and it was better to use them than limp. I used crutches for two weeks and then sticks but still using one stick even at seven weeks for quite a lot of the time. Again the advice was to use a stick to avoid limping. Lucikly didn't have the socks as we had a sort of slipper thing in hospital that pumped your feet every few seconds and then aspirin to take at home. Keep up the exercises as they really do help progress and don't expect too much too soon. A friend told me she was running around after three weeks with no stickes etc. When I told the hospital team at my six week assessment they just laughed and said people have very short memories!

Thanks Gill, I am normally so fit with loads of walks so this has all been a major shock. Looking forward to a pain free day. Best wishes.

hi penny ...there were no socks for me - just fragmin injections for 6 weeks - as much as I didn;t like to inject myself, those socks really sound awful... I think you should walk with whatever makes you feel more comfortable and balanced and no pain... I made a mistake by doing what I was told by my physical therapist and probably walked too soon without any aids - still walk like a pinguin without cane -

I hope you have a good night - take care and be gentle with your self-

I must admit I would agree with your husband and encourage you to get your socks back on. DVT is worse than being a bit hot and uncomfortable. Only 3 more weeks to go.

Hi Penny I'm just over three weeks in and doing well and hate the socks.  I'm still on the injections for one more week.  This week my husband will be away working and the forecast is for the weather to be very hot so I'm going to free myself from the shackles of the TED socks. My plan is to ensure I'm on my feet hourly during the day and going out walking twice a day.  With activity, and plenty of water, I hope to be fine.

In my hospital they don't have Ted socks. In the firrst few days after the op they use special bed socks connected to a device which massages your feet every five seconds. But when you go home you don't have to use any special sock. No injection either, I am taking a mini aspirin every day ( five more to go!)

I am in week 4, doing well.

    Best wishes
