People who have chosen a natural route for osteoporosis, what are you doing?

Posted , 6 users are following.

After much deliberation I have chosen the path of natural for treating osteoporosis. I would like to hear what others are doing in the way of supplements or food to help this condition.

I thought I would try this for a while then have another bone density test to see if I have made any difference.

Also, I would like to hear from anyone who knows of safer medications that could be on the market in the near future.

Refused to take calcium prescription drug CalfovitD3 as contains colouring agent E110 AND sucrose. Contacted a biochemist and now take well known product - Calcium, magnesium with boron in powder form,  twist apart capsule of Vitamin K2, plus liquid D3 in a dropper in the winter

I'm in my mid 70's, been active all my life, I have advanced osteoporosis but no pain whatsoever - gym two to three times a week, Pilates once a week and walk a lot.  I am unable to tolerate Bisphosphonates, success with Strontium until doctor took me off it,   now on six monthly injections of denosumab (Prolia)  - no known sign affects. I am due another bone scan in 12 mnths time.

I would be interested to know how you hope to treat your osteoporosis in a more natural way.

Due another bone scan in 12 months time.

I have deliberated very hard to come to the decision to not take the drugs offered at this time. I even have a packet of fosamax but the side effects scare the hell out of me. I have never felt like this before.

There are side effects for prolia. My oral surgeon advised me against it.

I don't want to influence you as you have already had it anyway.

Have you had repeat bone density tests and did they show improvement?

Your extras you do are mainly what I do except you are better with the exercise than I am at the moment as I have had some other health issues.

I may decide to risk the medications in the future but my gut feeling after much research is to delay for the time being at least. There may be some safer ones on the way but they lie about the safety for a start anyway.

I take lots of other drugs so I am not anti drug just very wary of those being offered for osteoporosis.

I  would like to have your confidence in treating bone loss through diet and exercise. The problem is that one only ever hears from people taking drugs (for any condition) when they have unpleasant or dangerous side effects. One rarely hears from those taking drugs who experience NO side effects.

I have researched many sites advocating "natural ways of treating osteoporosis" but they all appear to be selling their own product!

Sometimes things are meant to be. I get very frustrated when I read articles on "how to prevent osteoporosis".  My mother had osteoporosis and spent her last years in a wheel chair and in constant pain. Knowing that it was in my genes  I did everything I thought I could NOT be diagnosed with osteoporosis;  I led a very active and healthy life - horse riding, badminton, running, ate loads of  fresh vegetables, milk and yogurt -   not too much red meat, never drank fizzy drinks, watched my weight etc etc yet still my bones are osteoporotic with my spine reading a T score of - 5.2, not good,  but I remain positive - don't horse ride any more but keep active in other ways.

I cannot tolerate bisphosphonates (in fact they damaged my throat), Strontuim   lowered my hip score so much that I am no longer osteoporitic in my hips, but doc took me of it).   For now I shall continue with six monthly injectons of denosumab but await my next Dexa scan with interest!

I'm a great believer in the power of the mind.  if you feel what you are doing to treat your osteoporosis is right for you - Keep at it!!

I feel this way at the moment but that does not mean I will not commence the drugs in the future.

My sister takes the fosamax and she did no research and did not hesitate to take it. She has not been on it long so time will tell.

I worry about the throat, teeth, jaw, femur breaks, and the other side effects that people are experiencing.

So long as they list a side effect they cover themselves. Although, a lot of people are suing especially in America.

      I have very small bones.

The half life of these drugs scares me too.

I hope you go okay on the prolia injections. I turned that down on advice from my oral surgeon.

      Thanks for your response.

I am a patient at a reputable private practice and my dentist is fully aware that I take denosumab and has no problems with that. I have discusseed problems with the immue system when taking denosumab (prolia) and my doc's comments were that whilst denosumab MAY aggravate the immune system if there is a weaknesss there in the first place,  it should not be assumed that in an otherwise healthy individual it will cause problems.

Another writer on this forum has mentioned falling and balance. I do squats on the flat side of a BOSU ball and that definitely improves balance!!

Mary, my oral surgeon advised against it. Be very careful if you need an extraction. Seek out a specialist and precautions need to be taken. A blood test can check whether you are at risk when having an extraction. It is out of the realm of a normal dentist. My oral surgeon has handled hundreds of patients with jaw death and he advised against prolia.

    Thank you Kathleen

I will be very careful and take your advice if I need an extraction.

I take vitamin K2 in a soft gel capsule form. Bisphosphonates damaged my throat (despite taking all the usual precautions)  so am unable to swallow  tablets. The capsules can be twisted apart and I take the contents at mealtimes with my calcium/magnesium capsules - mixed in a little natural yogurt.

Thanks for that info. Very sorry about your throat! Too many people are paying the price for taking fosamax and other drugs.

Let's hope something safer is on the way or the natural route works for those of us doing that!

Would be very interested in natural remedies. Now on Denosumab having reacted very badly to Actinel. Strontian was fine but my prof only allows so many years of a particular med. next inj due beginning of January but now having drug reaction. Sore throat, pain in bones, pain in muscles, rapid heart beat, slight numbness around mouth, tiredness, disturbed sleep, loose stool, more frequent urination and feel generally awful. Go to gym 4 times a week and do Bokwa when body allows (but only gently and no jumping). My concern is how long will it take for side effects to wear off if inj is 6 monthly. Can't cope with this for six months. Apparently one has injections for 3-5 years and then you stop, do decade scan in 5 years time and hopefully great improvement.

So sorry to hear you have had a bad reaction to Denosumab. I was diagnosed about five years ago and went down a similar drug path to you.

I have no reaction to denosumab apart from a few aches and niggles for around 24 hours after injection. I'm a great believer in the power of the mind so tell myself that I'm imagining them - believe me - I'm not!

I don't take the doctor's prescribed calcium and vitamin D as it is full of sugar and colouring! I do take calcium with magnesium and boron. Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2.

My initial dexa reading was -5.2 for spine ( no pain whatsoever so a bit of a surprise). It is now -4.9 still not brillaint but I exercise a lot, gym, pilates and zumba and try to forget my diagnosis.- just don't go out when its icy and am careful on stairs. I'm in my 70s and don't have any other medical problems (except my eye sight could be a lot better - does anyone know how to increase the font size on this site?)  so am able to remain positive.

      Good luck!

I won't take the injections called Prolia here. My oral surgeon said not a good idea as I will surely have teeth to be extracted in the next few years or so.

Because they last for six months is another deterrent for me.

I do understand everyone makes the decision best for them.

Sadly, in my opinion, we are still waiting for safe and effective drugs for osteoporosis.

I am choosing to take calcium, vitamin d 3, magnesium, etc.for now at least.

Include green vegetables and yoghurt and cheese to cover K2.

Others are mentioning vitamin E and A as well. I will check my diet to cover these for the moment.

Maybe just have a really good diet with all the goodies like vegetables and fruit and fresh not processed stuff.

      All the best Faith.
