Peppermint Capsules

Hi -

Has anyone tried peppermint capsules? If so, what was your experience? I have been taking bismuth subsalicylate and I think it is messing up my digestion and causing a rebound effect. I need an alternative but am afraid the peppermint oil will irritate my stomach and cause nausea.

Thanks,

Marina

I tried peppermint tea for my IBS. It didn't help my pain and it gave me heartburn because it relaxes the esophageal sphincter and lets the acid out. I have acid reflux caused by a weak oesophageal sphincter. Peppermint treatment is not recommended for people with acid reflux for this reason.

peppermint gives me the runs horrendously. what are you taking it for? can you take an alternative?

That is one of the side effects I'm afraid of!

I have IBS-C and take IBgard peppermint oil pills. The capsules prevent the peppermint oil from entering your digestive tract until it gets to the small intestine, which is where you want it. This has been a huge help to me. My abdominal pain is much less frequent than it used to be, and my abdominal distention is steadily decreasing. For me, 6 pills per day were necessary to feel the positive effect (2 before or after each meal), and I had to take it for a couple months before I felt the full impact.

Hi, are you still taking the IBgard? I was given it from my gastro but have been afraid to take them. I hate taking anything.

Yes, I'm still taking IBgard, 6 pills/day. I've been on it for over 6 months now. No negative effects at all.

I understand your hesitancy to take anything; I feel the same. But for me, anyway, these have seemed very mild, with only positive effects.

I am afraid to take them too. I fear I'll be the person with the side effect that takes me out for the day. When you have IBS, you have to prepare for things in advance and do whatever it takes to reduce your sick days.

Thanks Jeanne! Do you find they prevent the IBS-D symptoms? Can you take them first thing in the morning before breakfast?

I have IBS-C, so I can't comment on the effect with IBS-D. You need to take them 30-60 mins before or after meals, so you could definitely take them first thing before breakfast.

But as I said, I didn't feel benefits until I was taking 6 per day, 2 pills before or after each meal.

I take Colpermin and I think they help.

You can buy them over the counter at a chemist and if they help you can get them on prescription.

    Hope this helps.
