Hi wondered if anyone is experiencing bloating.  I have only just noticed over the past 2/3 months.  I am 51 and have been told after blood tests finally that i am peri-menopausal.  My periods are now all over the place with 19 day gaps between them.  (jeez wish i could fast forward myself out of this) groan.  Horrible.  Now after my period 2 weeks ago i am getting all the syptoms of having another one.  Anxious, grumpy, sore boobs and spots!!!!!!  errrh.

I am new to Peri but I had to be put on meds Friday because of back to back anxiety attacks. Mmy period lasted from Jan 31 to around Feb 10 and I haven't seen any sign of another yet but the anxiety attacks we're horrible and this gas and bloating is awful as well.

Hi sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. and going through this so young. Have you been to your GP and been diagnosed as peri?  I take Magnesium and Agnas Casta which helps massively, just keep forgetting to take it when i feeling ok again.  Im 51 and having been having those, am i going mad moments since i was 48.  Panic attacks, anxiety.  I do know that for me the symptoms flip flop about, so can be feeling awful one minute, then im ok.  Exercise helps as well, as does a plant estrogen based diet.   ~Take care, we are all on here to  help and support each other.  I found this site and it has helped me massively. xx

Yes! Me too. That's what initially brought me here. I went to the OB/GYN a year ago and they found nothing wrong other than perimenopause, not to mention by the time my appointment took place all my bloating symptoms were gone. I was very worried something like ovarian cancer was the cause but over the last 16 months it goes away for days or weeks or even a few months then comes back for a few days -which is not indicative of cancer. I thought oh no here we go again last week. I get bloating, back ache, funky pains like my period is coming only it never does. Then I'll get breast tenderness and then that goes away but still no period. Combined with hot flashes, heart palps and mood swings and now even acne. It doesn't happen all at once either so I know I'm on a hormone roller coaster. I've been using a combo of lots of sleep, gas-X, fennel tea, ibuprofen, and Omega oil supplements. It helps only a little.

Oh yes- exercise helps a whole lot! I swim about 3-4 days a week and I feel great during and after I swim but a few hours later or the next day it might be back. I also use topical magnesium for the heart palps. I have Xanax now for any anxiety, which is a new thing for me too and not fun, but luckily it doesn't seem to happen too often.

Hello I am nearly 49 and showing peri menopause symptoms for a few months now Mr Dr did hormone tests testosterone and prolactin both normal and the lab wouldn't process FSH AND LH as I had to be under 45 years old to be diagnosed peri ? I thought that was strange !! So I know I am as periods all over the place I was due two weeks ago it started ok but day two nothing but spotting and still are weeks on!!! Can you tell me what hormone tests they did for you ? Many thanks Michelle xxx

Hi, Dont worry, you probably are peri, I had this problem, i have had loads of blood tests since i was 47, am 51 now, all but the last one, i had in April came back normal even though at the time, i was having meno symptoms.  This it for me what made me feel like i was imagining symptoms and loosing it.  Hormonal fluctuations are very hard to nail.  Never heard of the having to be under 45 to be diagnosed, what!!??? that makes no sense what so ever.  I dont know specific tests they did.  It all stemed from having a high blood pressue reading.  My Dr just said that you are peri-menopausal.  I knew i was by that stage, as stressed to the hilt.....was on 10 period at the time.  ~So after she told me that all made sense and strangely i felt better.  One thing i have noticed is that a lot of women seem to have high blood pressure in peri- i tried to tell my dr that i was so anxious that was affecting blood pressure, fortunately she did listen to me but i have got to go back again and get it tested.

It was for the FSH AND LH and my dr wrote investigating peri and they said no as not under 45 years?! Did you say you have prolonged periods? This is the first time I have spotted instead of a period I usually have a very heavy flow clots for 8-9 days !! But two weeks now and no sign of going xxx

      Hi Michelle,

Yes i think the peri-meno for me is causing high blood pressure through anxity, like my Dr said for some people it can do this. The fight or flight syndrome. My bp always been perfect, never had any problems, the only other time i got was when i had my daughter in hospital (white coat anxiety) i think!! I have never ever heard of the got to be under 45 years old to check out FSH and LH hormones.  I might do some research into this as this has made me curious.  My periods are all over the place, long durations between them, then short durations.  Never know when at all.  I had a 10 day period last April which is when i got my peri diagnosis. xx

its partly down to slow digetstion, which inturn causes constipation thats what causes the bloat and fluid retention, all like we would normally get near our cycles, after eating try lying flat to help food go through better, only for about 30mins after main meal, as if your working your not going to be able to do that, then if you get the bloating, and gas, drink plenty of water to keep stools soft, and try some gentle walking to keep bowels moving, otherwise you could try a very gentle laxative, or diet to help with constipation, you may find that if you dont manage to shift the bloat and constipation, you will end up with severe runs, as it causes symptoms similar to IBS, so stay off gluten whilst you have these symptoms, switch to  brown bread, pasta and rice, instead of the white stuff just make the symptoms much worse otherwise, and during peri you can end up having symptoms a lot longer than you would normally associate with your cycle but it will ease at some point, like everything else, but when thats the 64 million dollar question isnt it!!

I don't have any constipation. My bloating is more like water weight. A diuretic also helps a bit for me. I have celiac disease so I don't eat any gluten at all. Brown bread and pasta still have gluten, it needs to say "gluten free" for it to be gluten free. But that too seems to help anyone with IBS or digestive issues.

Water retention can be caused by PMS which as we know, is hormonal related, and PMS will be worse during peri menopause. if you feel it is water retention, and not gas at the moment, then you can try elliminating some salt from your body by drinking water, as water dilutes salts, however, do not drink anymore than 3 litres per day, as your at risk of diluting your salts too much, you can also elliminate any meals high in salt particular ready meals, or, sauces, if you dont want to drink the water, then try fruits and veg which act as a diuretic, celery, cucumber, watermelon etc, see if that helps along with your water tablets.   Bloating from gas will cause temp weight gain, so, will water retention until both has passed, but both are normal to have, and both become much worse during our menpause flares so dont worry, it will pass, if your finding it isnt passing then get it checked out...............good luck with it.

I've been going through a really bad bloat period. Where I am bloated most of the time. I am putting it down to peri. I am 53 now and I think they don't do peri tests on women over 45 as most have naturally entered peri at that point. So, there would be no point in validating it?

I had a bad day today as I feel as though I can't wear any of my usual clothes, I look flipping preggo. It's really hard to look preggo when you are 53!

I get down about it as I feel like once losing ones middle (waist) there is no point in even trying to look nice or dress. I get gassy or water retention. I haven't seen a Doctor about it because I used to bloat like mad when I was PMS (Still do as I still have irregular periods) so I read somewhere whatever symptoms you got when you got PMS get worse during peri and last longer. Like a perpetual PMS sad

When I have the energy I try and drink green smoothies, they do help. I also try and eat something with a protein in, every three hours, four maximum. It's hard as you feel 'fat' when really it's disension. I feel for you.

Yes thats what i have I  had it last month, only just recently noitced as my periods are getting so close together, and i have always suffered PMS very badly, that i almost feel constantly bloated, and yes i feel preggas too.  Annoying as im not fat anywhere else just bloated midriff. Im wondering if cutting down on certain foods would help it.  I already kind of do the protein thing, as i know that it keeps you fuller longer.  Grrrr this is annoying!

I so relate. I have heard that drinking lemon water first thing in the morning helps and you tend to use the bathroom more, avoiding salt (which I love), avoiding obviously gassy food like cabbage, some have said following the FodMap Diet really helps. Vitamin B6 and Probiotics. The thing is I do know that some or maybe all of this help, but I find I can only keep it going for a few days then I lose track!.

Anyway, I went and bought some fat tummy tops yesterday biggrin I see there are shops that specialize in that (who knew) and have decided to try and live with it and cover it up. sad

I am also slim everywhere else. Or at least, regular size it's just my middle. Which is the hardest part to hide?

if you feel the bloat is due to water retention, keep off the salt as this is what bloats us with water retention, and eat more diuretic type foods, cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, celery, drink more water to dilute the salt as well, try and drink 3 litres per day if you can.
