Periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia coming up!

I'm 39 and having a PAO to tackle one side of my hip dysplasia in April (2012) and would really love to speak to someone whose been through it. I know all about the operation, but it's the recovery and what I will and won't be able to do that's worrying me. Anyone out there??

Hi Everyone
I am a 30 year old female, I was born with ddh and had my first hip replacement when I was 21. I am now having problems with my right hip and have had immense pain for the last 2 years, but I have had children so had to wait for the op. My POA surgery is scheduled for this December. I am under Dr Tim Theologis at Nuffield in Oxford, he has done my hips before he is fantastic.
I am really nervous about the op it looks alot worse than a hip replacement and I found that hard. I have 3 children 4,6&1 so really would love to hear about recoveries after this op. There are so many forums and websites I can't keep up with them 😂
Hope everyone is doing well with their recovery 😃

Hi there! I noticed you're undergoing your treatment at Oxford under mr theo! I was under him however he's now pulling away from his adult patients and I've been moved to a different consultant.
It's nice to come across someone else who is also at Oxford! I'll be keen to know how you get on with your next surgery and hope everything goes well! What are you having done? Sorry you had a replacement at 21 that's very young. I'm awaiting a date for my own surgery but I think I'm looking at Jan/Feb.
Be nice to hear how you get on with the whole process.

Hi Lucy
Lovely to hear from you. i have been under Mr T since I was 15 so over 15 years now, I have heard he is slowing down with the adults. who are you with now? I am having a PAO op on my other hip to try and stop me needing another replacement and bide me some time, I am soo nervous now! What operation are you waiting for? Its nice to speak to other people who go through this, I struggle because I am so young

Hey stevie! Your 30 aren't you?! Young to be having your other hip done,
you were really young to have had one at 21 to start with!
do you have a date for surgery!?
I'm having a pao also under mr glyn jones I think his name is, as mr theo is pulling back on adult patients.
Like you very nervous and they suggest it to give more time rather than letting the displaycia wear the hip out. I'm 27 and really am worrying about the whole thing and wondering if it's right but don't want a hip replacement at a young age!
Nice to meet someone in the same boat! It's sucks doesn't it

Yes unfortunately I was born with DDH and always had a problem with left one, there was no saving it and its the best thing I have done as it really has changed my life. the right one is due a PAO because it has deteriorated so much he doesn't want to do a replacement as it may be able to be saved. I am going in on the 8th dec, have you asked for a date of surgery they should be able to get you in ASAP. Wonder why they have changed you over already if he is still operating on adults?
I have heard really good things about PAO so I am sure its the best move for you, only problem is longer recovery etc compared to a new hip but we have a life span of how many we can have dont we 😯. How come you need to have one?
If your on facebook or email we csn keep in touch and I can let you know how it goes. I am so so nervous but it has to be done 😦

Hello! I am! You can look me up, Lucia Bundell is my name on there.
Glad you have a date mind you I bet you are nervous. I don't have one yet and I am still having doubts but I know to get a better
Life span from the hip it's the best option, they said to me we don't have a crystal ball but potentially you could be looking at a hip replacement at 35/40 which I know I don't want I would like to get the best out of my own joint. I'm lucky that the bone at the moment is healthy making me a good candidate for the op. Which is also frustrating because I want to have no surgery but if I leave it another year or so I might not be in that position!
I have bilateral hip displaycia I can't remember if they called it ddh or dds something like that. But my right one is more affected.
I get a lot
Of pain in the left but they said I'm over
Compensating lol! Even if I try and concentrate to walk evenly I can't! Haha!
Would be nice to keep in touch and se how your doing and vice versa for support and advice.

I had labrum reconstruction 6 wks ago and GANZ 2.5 weeks ago. During the labrum recontruction, they attempted to give me medication that would also work for the GANZ but I had terrible side effects. I went to a Pain Management Specialist before the GANZ and still couldn't do the heavy pain meds for much more than a few days. I'm on Tramadol but experiencing side effects that can be worse than the pain so I don't always take it. Or when I do, I'm up all night. Nights are bad enough. Does anyone else experience that? I'm also not able to regulate my body tempurature either. I'm emotionally and physically crushed. I could use some advice/support.

Hi all.
Hoping someone here can advise me
I have had a laberal tear fixed and then a PAO for each hip 7 months apart, last one 18 months ago, by Marcus Bankes at Guy's hospital.
I am now in agony again in one hip, just with day to day activities. Has anyone had problems post surgery similar to the pain they experienced pre treatment? I'm thinking it's another tear perhaps. So upset as this has been a tough few operations/recoveries and I can't stand comfortably once again let alone exercise or consider getting pregnant

Nina, you are so brave. I am 10 days post op right side pao surgery & I'm in so much pain. I'm even thinking that I may of made a terrible mistake having this surgery. I've got to have it done on the other side & I'm not sure if I can go through with it. You must be devestated that you are going through all this pain after such extensive surgery. I can only wish you all the best & you have my deepest sympathy x

Hi Kat
Please don't use my experience as an example, I've heard so many success stories and up until now I've been so much better. The recovery is really tough, I was home alone for a lot of it. Hang in there, you will soon feel the benefits and I always think pain is easily forgotten. If you need any advice through recovery get in touch and keep up your pain meds always mundane light physio you can do it!

Hi Nina & Kat,
Having read your comments and like Nina said, we can't really all compare each others' personal experiences as we are all different ages and of different mobility restrictions so what one surgeon says to one of us, may be different to another.
I am 39 and after 30 years of complaining of knee pain (and finally hips 4 years ago) I was diagnosed in Feb this year and had a PAO on my left in June with Mr Johan Witt at The London Clinic. They were ALL awesome! I met a patient that has been treated by Bankes and he is also very well respected there. However, in my personal case, there was no point in repairng my labral tear as it only happens for a reason, and once that reason is corrected, torn or not, it won't cause you any more issues (which was the case in my treatment). Also, I was not advised that I could have the 2nd one done for AT LEAST 12 months...
So far (I'm now 5.5 months post-op) it's not been a bad experience... very hard physically and mentally, but if you're strong and ensure you always do your exercises without fail, it gets better. I found that a lot of the post-op pain I experienced (after a few weeks) was all muscular but i's not easy to determine where it is. Do you have a good Physio? If the hip angle is correct, it's VERY unlikely to be another tear (from what my surgeon told me about my case). My problem ended up being glute and hamstring pain as well as very tight calves. All sortable with a good Physio and some dry needling (sounds bad but it's awesome!). Where are you in the UK?
Kat - after about 10 days, I think that is the worst period. But if you are in that much pain, then your pain medication isn't under control. I had VERY little pain at all, throughout the whole first 4 weeks because it was controlled, leaving me to be free in the hydro pool and doing my exercises.
More than happy to chat to either of you on the phone... it's such a rare procedure, and as much as family and friends can support you, they really don't know what you are going through.
Shout and I'll send you a personal message.

Thanks Karen
I had some more physio and I seem to be fine. That bought of pain lasted a few days, never felt pain like it, but since then i've been fine and no complaints. I love my new pelvis and shall never take even just walking for granted again!
Ps. I'm in London

That's good to hear. I'm actually still in physio and I'm now 8 months post! I'm 40, and I've had issues since the age of 10 (undiagnosed) so I've got a lot of muscle re-training to do. I'm very grateful to have private healthcare and being looked after by Johan Witt and amazing local physio centre where I live.
Do you have the 2nd hip to do?
Karen
