Perianal abscess - Help!

Hello, I'm back on here as last year I had an operation at hospital to drain a large perianal abscess, it was cut open in an x shape and left open to heal. I had it packed everyday for a week, then every other day but  unfortunately it healed on the outside before the inside, so I had to have it done again, the surgeon made a larger incision and this time I had it packed everyday until it healed. There was no fistula at my check up. Now a year later it although the wound has healed, there is a tiny hole in the centre of the x shaped wound. The other day there was a tiny bit of drainage from the tiny hole...... Do i need to see a doctor or will it be ok?

Like you I had emergency UK  NHS surgery under general anaesthetic for a very painful perianal abscess about 18 months ago. The resulting L shaped wound needed packing and dressing changed daily for about 8-10 weeks after. All seemed to be going well and healing nicely but after about 6 months I noticed a small swelling and tendereness in the same area. To cut a long story short I was referred back to my original consultant and it appears I had developed a small fistula tract which was operated on last week, again under GA. I now have a draining seton inserted and have been told I need to go back to see the consultant in 6-8 weeks. As far as I know it is not Crohn's related, more a case of where the fistula was i.e.close to/within the sphincter muscles. Not really in any pain, a bit sore maybe. More embarrassed about having this problem than anything else!

I had mine done about a year ago on NHS.... I had to get mine packed daily for 6 weeks at the distric nurse clinic. Then at GP surgery by GP nurse getting appointments was hard work!! Then after 3 visits the GP nurse said all was well. I didn't have any follow up check ups or anything. Now a month age where my icision was it was an x shape and right in the midlle of the x a small hole appeared but has since haeled over, GP said all is ok so didn't get referred. It was so mortifying all different dr's and nurses having to look. I'm female, aged 38 now do a lot of running walking and keep fit. I am toned and slim so i hope that my exercise and keep fit regime hasn't made things worse. I sit all day at work you see, not got a padded bum lol, so might be causing it too

The scar on my abscess is healed but every fortnight or so a tiny hole appears in the centre of my abscess incision, GP not referred me to dr at hospital as said it looks like all is really good. sigh. On NHS need to be referred to dr by GP. Also said it symptomless no drainage.

That's interesting I think mine was like that for a while too, I certainly felt it for a long time afterwards. good that nothing is coming out but my surgeon(nhs) said to call him anytime if I had a question maybe no harm in doing that too if it would help put your mind at rest. I suppose with all the pressure down smile there this may happen for a while afterwards until it is completely healed.

my daughter has undergone surgery (April) for similar to yourself.  since then, she's been in A & E god alone knows how many times, she's been on anti biotics around 9 times, the recurring abscess has burst on several occasions, she has had two cancelled operations to repeat what was done, she has no idea what they're doing next time, apart from "we'll have to open it up and take away the scar tissue too"  now she has phoned me to say that she has a raging mouth abscess, i'm at a loss to know what to do , but my fear is that the poison from the abscess is now making it's way around her body, and that anti b's will start to have zero impact.  this is an NHS issue, we're told the ops are cancelled due to lack of theatre nurses.  when is an emergency suddenly not an emergency?   would you be able to 'talk' online to my daughter?  is there any way she could communicate with you privately?

Hello. Any updates on how everybody got on on this feed?

I had 3 operations in the space of around a year. How many operations have people had? Did it ever stop? I just had an MRI and they confirmed I do not have a fistula. I do not have chrohns.

    Full story:

I have had a re-occurring perianal abscess. The first I had was January 2022. I also had covid at the time and was reluctant to go to hospital and was in quite a bad way by the time I went. NHS made me wait a week for the surgey in agony. The abscess popped on its own accord. It was quite a large incision. Due to covid post operative care was difficult and I changed the packing myself throughout.

I was soon again on antibiotics and they worked the first time. But only delaying the abscess from reoccurring for a short time when it returned July 2022 and antibiotics did not work. I again was made to wait a week in Hospital. Abscess popped on its own again.

Then in February 2023 the abscess returns again. This time I was operated on within 24 hours and this was much easier on me, a smaller incision and recovery was much faster.

Only after this 3rd operation they arranged an MRI which I just had the results back for, and I have been informed there is no Fistula. I have started to get an itching sensation which I believe may be the onset of it returning and operation number 4.

I want to know if this will ever stop and how many times might I need this operation. Has anybody had success with alternative/preventative treatment?
