Pericyazine and Pregnant.

Posted , 3 users are following.

My Daughter has been taking Pericyazine for Anxiety for approx a year, she is now pregnant (27 weeks) ,  Midwife suggested she stay on the medication but will be monitored, but has not been monitored.  Having moved home she is with a new surgery, the doctor told her she needs to stop the medication as this could have effects on the baby. Can anyone offer some credible advise please.

Just found this on the internet, but would be interested in any thoughts on this forum...

    Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.

The safety of this medicine during pregnancy has not been established. It should not be used in pregnancy, particularly in the first and third trimesters, unless considered essential by your doctor. If the medicine is used during the third trimester it could cause side effects or withdrawal symptoms in the baby after birth and the baby may need extra monitoring because of this. Seek further medical advice from your doctor.

If you do get pregnant while taking this medicine it is important to consult your doctor straight away for advice. You should not suddenly stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to, as this could cause your symptoms to come back.

This medicine passes into breast milk. As it could cause drowsiness and potentially other side effects in a nursing infant, it is recommended that women who need treatment with this medicine should not breastfeed. Seek further medical advice from your doctor.

Pericyazine is a pipadine phenothiazine antipsychotic.

It will not harm the unborn baby much.

I would recommend that your daughter stays on the medication as the midwife suggested, but take the lowest dose possible.

I don't think you will find many people who have taken Pericyazine when pregnant, to ask them about their experiences.

The midwife may also recommend that you bottle feed your baby when it is born.

I take chlorpromazine for anxiety which is a similar drug, and I got suicidal and took a big overdose 9 years ago, when my psychiatrist took me off them.

I have a 13 year old daughter, and having a baby can be very worrying for anyone.

If it calms her does it have addictive effects on the baby?  Is the baby born addicted? Is there a specialist you can seek out to get answerS? I bet you can call the manufacturer. They must have statistics and this information. It wouldnt be released into the public otherwise. I was always under the impression you go off medications when you find out your pregnant. But maybe thats old school.

There indeed a fact sheet on this. I did a search. Was curious. Im thinking you have as well? I was going to give you the link in messages but you have no link on your profile to send a message. So maybe google this medication and type in pregnancy fact sheets and see if you can locate more answers. **I think you want real time answers from real people but not sure this is the right forum for such answers. The basics was they should be monitoring folic acid levels and babies growth.  And that issues can arise from stopping it too. It doesnt seem to have much information on trimesters and what actually has occurred. I dont think anyone  here or any where outside the medical professional world can say what to do. Simon is correct in saying we all wants whats is best for the baby and the mum.

It is very much unknown how pericyazine affects babies.

Pericyazine is not addictive or has withdrawal symptoms.

I is very difficult to say what to do, as we all want what is best for baby as well as mum.

Lisa is correct in mentioning about folic acid.

My wife was prescribed 5mg a day because she was on medication when she was pregnant.

I suppose a multivitamin may also help if you are not eating enough fruit and vegetables.

Maybe a blood test would make sure that you are fine.

They sometimes give the baby a vitamin k injection when it is born if the mother is on medication.

I think it prevents bleeding in the brain or something.

When my wife was pregnant with our daughter, no one really told us anything. And since I have anxiety it was very worrying not to know what was going on.

Any medications when expecting a child needs to be mentioned to your GP. Many will withdraw medications that effect the brain. Have Her follow Her new GPs suggestion. Remember she should check and withdraw from medications in a regulated way.

For all above, remember we are not Medical Professionals, follow your GPs advice
