Perienum reconstruction stitches dissolved too quickly

I am 11 days post op for posterior repair and perienum reconstruction. The perienum is still as sore today as it was the day of surgery. Saw doc  a few days ago and she said it looks like one stitch didn’t take and so there is a raw open wound. No infection so should heal by itself (although will take significantly longer). The next day I noticed two of the stitches at the front had also come away. Still attached but on one side only. Hospital have agreed to see me in two day but I am so worried. Has anyone experienced this? Will they re-stitch me? I’m concerned as the stretched perienum contributed to the prolapse originally and so now it’s open again will the prolapse return? I had hoped to be tighter following surgery! I’m resting all the time - mainly because being on my feet gives me incredible lower back pain. When did your stitches come away / dissolve for your periunum repairs? I’m just looking for reassurance I think.

I would definitely be going back to my surgeon hun.

If the stitche is loose then it could affect the repair.

Get on the phone to them tomorrow and tell them your not happy leaving them.

Not heard that before, doesn't sound very professional in my opinion. Any open would isn't goodx

Also it's so early days for you to be doing things.. All you should be doing is resting up to 6 weeks, doing little but small walks and pottering around house.no housework, lifting or anything that can compromise your healing. I'm 13 wks tvh and anterior repairx

Thanks for your reply. Honestly, I’m barely doing anything. But so bored laying on bed or sofa the whole time! I’ll call them tomorrow and see what they say.  I’m so upset as I just wanted it fixed. Has this happened to anyone else?

You are doing right by not doing anything. I know it's so boring and groundhog day.

If be very distraught if I was told to leave the open stitches like the other lady mentioned. That doesn't sound right to me.. I hope you get sorted soon and make sure they do Restitch you as those stitches should be closed.. Don't forget it's the gateway to your actual repair!!x

I would definitely go back. If it needs restitching I imagine it’s best to get it done now.

I had a complication with my internal stitches. Blood built up behind them then eventually burst through causing a massive bleed and infection. It was only the top layer of stitches (apparently there was two layers inside, not sure if that’s common). So it didn’t affect the actual repair itself. They didn’t restitch and I was just told to rest for longer and let it heal. Which it did.

I also had perineum repair. This healed first and was fine, however even now 6 months later it can feel tight and I’m always a little  sore after intercourse. I think that area takes a while to settle down.

But definitely rest rest and more rest! I think we all come out of this operation expecting to feel right as rain within 4-6 weeks and it definitely takes longer. It’s a major op. I rested for over 8 weeks. Didn’t drive or do anything other than a gentle walk. And I don’t think I felt ‘myself’ until 12 weeks.

Thanks for your reply and for sharing your experiences. Ironically I’m more concerned by the two stitches at the front coming undone. There is no open wound there - looks like it didn’t take originally. My perienum was short to start with (contributing to the prolapse) and part of the repair was to lengthen it. With the two that have come undone I’m conerned it’ll be short again. I think, like you, they will leave the bit that is open to repair itself. That’s further back and is making siting extremely difficult. I really do hope all this is worth it in the long run!

Mandie, I had the same, one stitch fell down before the proper time and my gyn said that it would heal alone and now I have a tiny little hole. It’s better to go to the surgeon and insist that you don’t want a hole on your perineum

Hi welshgirl! Nice to hear from you, how you doing? I was talking to the other girl about my first rectocele surgery, I have a tiny hole in my perineum from that...

Yes, unfortunately I had a rectopexy done 5 weeks ago, I had lots of things, the rectocele came back and they discovered internal rectal prolapse and enterocele. I was feeling really bad. Now I’m resting a lot, this is a very slow recovery, they had to lift all my intestines! Just praying for this one to be the last surgery... but who knows...  hugs honey!!!!!

Saw surgeon. All is fine. It is open but will heal on its own. On antibiotics for infection. She did say I am significantly swollen, and more than I should be, so got to rest more. She checked everything and said repair is good. Hugely relieved. Another follow up in a few weeks.

Hi Mandie, I had stitches hanging down by day 11, and actually the doctor snipped 3 more to release pressure from a hematoma. It was not closed up, not eve when I ripped a couple more of them. I did have an open wound on my perineum/ vaginal entrance that was painful and of great concern, but the doctors did not seem to think it was a big deal. I called repeatedly to ask, are you suuuuuuuuure you're not going to close this up???? What I was told is that the open area wasn't any bigger than a small tear you might get in childbirth and it would heal just fine. It took about a week to close up and stop burning all the time. I used hot water in a peri bottle every time I used the toilette to clean the area and soothe, and a spray with diluted witch hazel and a little lavender and peppermint oil, with was very soothing. It will heal.  It feels awful. It just takes time.

Thank you! It’s so good to have some reassurance. It’s still very sore and uncomfortable. I am two weeks post op today. Feeling better in myself but continue to be anxious about the external wound. I feel like the bulge is still there also - I’m hoping it’s just the swelling, but the added pressure is making the perienum even more uncomfortable. I cannot wait to be back to normal! My surgeon said many women return to work after 4 weeks! Luckily my doctor does not agree with her as I cannot imagine being on my feet all day in just two weeks time!
