Perimenopause and flatulence

Hi ladies

A sensitive and embarrassing issue, but lately I have really been battling with flatulence.

Anyone else experience this? Any supplements or medication I can take to help reduce this. I do eat a healthy diet.

    Hi,

Yeah, there are over the counter medications that can help with this.  (Windeze) ha! great name! available in most pharmacy's I get this occasionally, beetroot is also good at clearing out the system.

Try eliminating onions and garlic. As yummy and healthy as they are they can be the culprates of dramatic windy conditions. Someone reccomended it to me when I first started getting the bloating and I did not know what was wrong with me. It did not healp the bloating but it did decrease my expulsions

    Hi Sydneymum

I got this about a month ago leading up to, and during a period (the first period after none for 3 months).  Was terribly bloated and suffered abdominal pain with the gas.  The gas and bloat didn't reduce until I started gluten free diet.  I am also eliminating lactose as a specialist told me everyone is lactose intolerant.  De-Gas is an OTC treatment that you can get here in Aust that is effective in relieving the gas.  Also, half a lemon squeezed in boiling water gave me instant relief.  I still feel bloated after I eat.  Bloat before eating is 80% better.  I don't know why no-one prepares us for this as we experience perimenopause.

I'm the same and trying a few different things. I have found when I eliminate wheat and gluten it helps with bloat. Also stress makes me bloat up. I have found probiotics are helping too.

Hi,the ladies are right, i became bloated and full after a few bites terrible gas , went on fr a couple of weeks trying over the counter stuff but it releived some of the symptons but not all and as soon as i ate all came back , the only thing that worked  was becoming gluten free and dairy free , it`s not as bad as it seems , theres tons of choices out there , but my obdominal feels great  and also take ultima flora critical care pro- biotics  the bottle just comes with 7 pills , and it will jump start u to a fresh gut. flactuation of hormones (peri-meno) will often make you sensitive to lactose.. it works and not only did changing my diet help my gut , i feel so much more energetic because no gluten.! by the way im not siliac or allergic to dairy , im just sensitive for now. but you need to try it and stick to it for a least 2 to 3 wks .. you`ll feel great ! good luck!

I also recommend looking into the FOD Diet, which also explains that some foods make us more gassy than others.(I'm not very good at following regimes so not sure if it will work for me). Sometimes 'healthy' foods can cause the issues, like lentils for example.

Emm, I don't know whats going on, but so many of us are complaining of this problem.  Well I'm not complaining as such - just that everyone else in my home is!!

Don't think I'm the best person to ask as I've tried them all:  Windeze; Charcoal; acidophillius tablets; Activia.  I am the original Cast Iron Gut Woman - Nothing shifts me at all!

I've recently gone back to taking lemon juice in hot water as the first drink of the day:  worked for one day. Big Deal!

I hate to say it, but it must be yet another of our wonderful Peri symptoms.  Just wish it wasn't so uncomfortable.

      Hi Ladies

Thank you one and all for your replies, comments and suggestions. I think I will give the probiotics a try. De-gas is an option, t hank you fellow Aussie!

I eat very little lactose and low carbs, and that helps, but it seems definitely hormone related, which sucks.....(more than Dyson or electrolux).

I also notice, it is worse if I eat beans. Duh!

Btw, slippery elm (powder form-1 tsp in yoghurt or water)really helped me with digestive issues like reflux and constipation.

I think I'm in perimenopause, because of certain symptoms, but the last week, I was in A&E with terrible abdominal pain, all scans and X Ray's clear, it was like having a baby it was that painful, now I'm thinking it could be gas pains. Can gas give you painful gas pains like this in perimenopause like your giving birth? I feel bloated as well.

I was suffering this too. Keeping up with my husband. I found it coincided with cravings and too must estrogen in my body. Once I started with the progesterone only, I started sleeping deep REM for first time in 8 months and the horrid sore swollen breasts, bloating, flatulence, hot flushes etc. were gone. As soon as I started with estrogen again (my doc told me to try a very tiny dose), symptoms all came back. Something else I noticed, with all the estrogen onboard my hemarroid (sp) came back. Again, with no estrogen onboard all my "insides" down there felt tighter and I thought "yeh I can do without that d*amn estrogen and never having another period again". Also, I had been suffering a nasty anal fissure for 10 mths from, now I know, +++estrogen and once I was in balance that healed up - and I was desperate enough to have surgery but tried $$ messy creams that gave me instant headaches (they are vasoconstrictors and affect yr heart) - ultimately glad I didn't have to have surgery because that would have been pretty bad healing alone. Good luck Sydneymum!

Did you also have problems with gas bubbles in butt crack all the time? i don't feel them all the time when they come out but when i get rid of one another takes it's place and it's sooo annoying

Oh my goodness, I cannot believe that you are describing exactly what I have been suffering with for the last year! The gas bubbles in the butt crack. I have no idea how else to describe it. Terrible gas that I sometimes feel like I won't be able to control it (imaging how embarrassing it would be at work to just past gas with no control over who hears it) I cannot believe how much we suffer from all of this. I realize now that your post is 3 years old but Trisha520, I wanted to thank you for being so honest. I feel better knowing that I am not the only one suffering with this.

Hi, just came a across this forum and started to read. Within 5 minutes, I thought, maybe I'm not going crazy after all. All these symptoms I've been experiencing and have never in my life discussing flatulamce so much in my life. I have all of these symptoms that people have discussed, the wind bubbles made me laugh, as I have asked lots of people and they all say, erm not sure what you mean. So to know someone else was experiencing that was like a breath of fresh air!which brings me to the point, I've experienced all of these issues but no one has mentioned,... Smelly flatulamce, is the anyone out there who is experiencing this one aswell.it can sometimes be that bad that I'll walk out the room myself. I am also experiencing piles,, which are not pleasant. Nor forgetting, anxiety, which goes worse because I worry about the bowel issues all the time. I wonder how long this will last, will it ever feel normal again and will I ever be free from, leg ache, butt ache, butt clenching, anyone else get that and 1001 other things. I can go weeks of feeling somewhat normal and then bang, back to square one. Looking for positive vibes here guys

Ive had very bad Flatulence since starting perimenopause some years ago. and its not going anywhere, lately its giving me abdominal pains, loss of appetite, weight loss. Done so many test and doctors say its gastric issues. It gives me anxiety too as i dont know what is going on with me. Last night was the worse after eating dinner the pain was so bad. Seems like these pains and symptoms shifts and move around, if its not headache or shoulder pain then it shifts to abdominal pains. Honestly I don't know what to think anymore.

      HI Karen97287,

I just replied above while realizing that I was replying to a post from 3 years ago and then realized that your post was only from 7 weeks ago! I have had so many stomach issues, the gas being one of the worst. I literally am clenching my butt all the time trying to keep gas in. I can't even believe that I am living like this as I typing this. I am so sorry if this is TMI. Recently I have also been suffering with bouts of constipation alternating with diarrhea and the newest issue? Bowel urgency. Like realizing that I need to move my bowels and running to the bathroom and losing a little stool on the way. I apologize to put this in my response but it makes me feel better to put this out there in case someone else will say they are having the same issue. I completely understand the piles, the leg aches, the butt aches, the clenching. It is like we are having the same symptoms. I agree, it makes me feel better hearing that other women understand. I haven't even attempted to explain the "bubbles in the crack" sensation to anyone because most women I know who have gone through meno sailed right through without any issues. Hopefully you are still on here somewhere checking messages, I wanted you to know that you aren't alone! Hang in there, this must get better at some point. Also, thank you for being so upfront with your symptoms, I really needed to read this tonight.

oooh the bowel urgency yup! after a whole life of constipation I now go an average of 4-5 times a day, and urgent and I feel so bad when I need to poop, dizzy, tachicardia, shortness of breath, a bit like a panic attack which subsides after about 15 minutes. It's making my life very miserable.

I completely understand what you are talking about. Why do we need to have such awful symptoms with this? I agree, my quality of life is terrible and has been for years. Once one symptom seems to improve, another takes it's place. It is an exhausting cycle. Sending good energy to you, be well.

thank you so much @ackallday , sending good energy back to you as well, God knows we need it.
