Perimenopause anxiety, depress. Can HRT help?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am 50 years old. For the last 10 months I have been suffering from extreme anxiety which has evolved into depression as well. I have been anxious and restless and could not sleep until recently when i started taking progesterone at night. My other symptoms include hip and back pain, night sweats and heart palpitations. I wake up every day at around 3:30am with my heart racing. I am on 10 mg of prozac but its not helping with the anxiety and depression much. I had a hysterectomy in 2015 but kept my ovaries so I cant use my cycle to figure out where I am at with all of this. My question is has anyone gone on hrt with symptoms like mine and had success not knowing if they have reached menopause? Will hrt work for me if Im in perimenopause?? What has worked for other women? I feel so miserable. I miss my old life. I NEED SOME HOPE. Please help.

HI there the pellet is mix estrogen and testosterone.. size of grain of rice inserted usually around hip area.. takes 2 min.. slow release lasts 4 months..$300 US.. progesterone is what they recomend based on your hormone levels.. 1 tablet before bedtime..

      Karen,

Curious as to if the pellets were your first foray into hrt or did you try other forms first? Is there a particular reason you chose pellets over a patch?

Also, are they easy to remove if you felt worse after a couple of weeks?

I am reading more and more about pellets but it has never been something any of my doctors have brought up. My ob/gyn suggested the vivelle patch to me a few years ago with 100 mg of progesterone (pill). I tried the patch first for 7 days and had to remove it because it made me bloat terribly, gave me a daily headache (and I suffer from migraines 2-3 x month) and the sorest nipples I have had since being pregnant.

I am having a very rough stretch though and am seriously considering hrt again.

Hi Kim Synthetic HRT will cause most woman to bloat i was puffy everywheres.. Also not good for you.. And most DR's will prescribe anti depresssnts because of less risk and just dont want to take the risk factor of strokes and cardiac issues...And soon as a woman mentions anxiety or mood issues 1st fix is anti depressants.. ive tried premarine, duovive etc slightly helped but with side affects..

BIO identical is most natural way of getting as close as u can to our natural hormone make up.. i dont know anyone thats had issues from it...in fact u will lose bit of weight and feel totally balanced.. I still hear issues about the patches.. I take 200mg of their prosesterone at night time with no side affects.. i sleep now like a baby...I dont know of anyone that has had to have their pellet removed..

I was miserable before.. i have my life back and am super thankful!!

      Hi Kim

I would do research on all of it before giving the pellets a try. Although im sure they have helped a lot of women, they also are not good for everyone and once the pellet is in you its tricky to just "take out" It also needs to be dosed correctly and this would be all symptom based.

The term bio identical is also kind of silly in that nothing is identical to the human body. Its probably better than the standard estrogen pill.

I would try it but definitely give it some thought. I myself would try the pellet but would need to travel far to the facility where they have this.

The patch is a little easier in that its removable and you are able to troubleshoot it, less expensive. the pellets are pretty big $ and that also should cause us to wonder also..

But having said that, hey whatever works works! Even if its a placebo and short lived.

    Hi Melissa

I dont know how old you are, but perimenopause is trickier for hrt treatment only because you are still in the decline of the hormones and they are fluctuating all the time so its difficult to guauge what a good dosing would be.

If you have a good doctor then they can atleast get your bloodwork and go by your symptoms and your labs.

Im post menopausal and trial and error with hrt, so i can only say that it helps many of us but a lot of us can not tolerate it, and does not help.

if your prozac isnt helping then maybe discontinue or try another type? Same thing with these...it will either work or it wont, or you need to find the right one.

Much of it is placebo effect, and others say they cant live without it.

Ive been on a journey and i can only say what ive tried and what has and has not worked.

im really sorry your suffering. i know where you are, and im living it as well, hit or miss a good day for which im reminded who i still am 😃

    Write anytime,

    xoxo

      Hi 😃

Thanks for responding. I am seeing it is a struggle for many women. Yes and every day is different. It scares me that some women suffer for so long. Thank you for your wisdom and encouragement. i hope you start to have many more days in the future that you feel like your old self.

    Hi Melissa,

I am right there with you...I can so relate to what you are feeling. I just posted recently about how I am experiencing depression after having to deal with this awful peri/meno crap for the past 4 years. I am 52 and I started going downhill at 48. I wish I could offer you the miracle 'cure' but I can't. I am struggling and every day is a different challenge. I live for the days when I feel like my old self. They are few and far between but do happen occasionally.

In the meantime, I take a regimen of vitamins and / or probiotics with clean eating to try an bolster my well being. I have my ob/gyn appt in January and may delve back into hrt. I tried it once and reacted very strongly to the lowest dose Vivelle patch there is...terrible bloating, daily low grade headache, and the sorest nipples I have ever had since my pregnancies. I ended up taking it off after a week.

Know that you are among a community of women who understand how difficult this journey is and hopefully that will relieve just a bit of your angst. If you stumble upon something that works well for you and provides relief, please share!
