Perimenopause: Anyone shedding lots of hair??? Does this stop?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi, I know we shed more in summer months and it has been super hot but I've noticed a lot more hair in my brush coming out than usual and found tiny tumbleweeds of my hair on the floor lately. I don't have bald spots, or anything but am scared I'm starting to shed so much hair. I'm 47 and in perimenopause and I have also been taking a biotin supplement. My 86 year old mom has a full head of hair but then she had kids and also said menopause is easy. Anyone else been experiencing this? Does it stop? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

This has been one of my worst symptoms and most upsetting on a personal level. I am 42.5 and think I started perimenopause at 40. I used to have very thick long wavy hair but the bad shedding started a few years ago right around the time my cycle got shorter (21 days). The texture has also changed, thinner strands and incredibly dry and brittle. It looks like straw. I have looked into thyroid, low iron, food allergies, etc. and taken so many supplements but nothing helps.

If it doesn't slow down I may go bald. Like you I do not have bald patches, but the front and sides around forehead are so thin.

So sad, I feel like I aged 15 years in 2 years.

If I find anything that helps I will let you know 😃

I have read that not eating enough or not eating enough carbs may contribute to the issue, I am not sure. I have been lowering carbs because they seem to make me really bloated these days. It's always something lol. Take care!

Thanks, that is interesting because I have always eaten low carb and now have gotten even stricter trying to lose hormone weight. I ate a slice of pizza today because stressed so maybe that helped lol. I'm also taking Biotin but been taking for a few weeks and so far no difference 😦

Same with me, always low carb but lowered it when I had digestive issues I thought wheat was contributing to. Now I think the digestive issues were just another random peri symptom.

I also read that the state of hair is from what was going on 3 months prior because it takes months to affect the hair. So a major stressor that happened months ago would show hair changes now. Same with positive changes made, maybe the Biotin takes a few months of taking it to see results. I tried a hair supplement but maybe didn't give it enough time.

Oh good to know. Maybe if I give the Biotin more time ... I'm not really having full on hot flashes yet but I know my progesterone has been really low for a while and last I checked my estrogen was "normal for my age" so prob on the low side but higher than my progesterone, hence the anxiety etc. And weirdly, my armpit hair stopped growing much a few years ago. My leg hair is normal. Figure another bizarre peri symptom. Not like I wanted a lot of armpit hair lol, but did make me feel like something was wrong that no longer really need to shave. This started almost 5 years ago when I was around 40 so prob when peri started. I wish doctors could find a real treatment. Seems like HRT doesn't work for many and when I took extra progesterone because mine was low just made me gain a TON of weight fast and made fibroid grow.

I hear ya! My symptoms seem to change frequently and so I can't figure out what to even do. Hair shedding, shorter cycles, no sex drive and increased dark/course facial hair at certain times of month are consistently around unfortunately. The anxiety, insomnia, mood swings, bloating and head pressure/aches come and go. I tried testosterone for sex drive, felt more alive but it made facial hair and shedding worse. Progesterone gave me acid reflux and lots of weight gain...

I sure hope it gets better because this is no way to live.

Half joking, I told my husband I now understand why there are so many divorces during this age bracket. I would trade myself in right now if I could 😃

Hi Sakura,,, has happened to me many times but I also have Hashimotos tyroid which also makes all of our symptoms worse and my hashimotos,,, But I do take hair skin nails everyday because it upsets me so much and after I get out of the shower I put a quarter size leave in moisterizer you may have to try a few befor you find the right one, rub it through your hair lightly so it doesnt get greasy and put the rest on the ends... My hair used to be my big trade mark it was long thick and blonde,,, nowI could cry its starting to thin up top a bit and my ends are not as thick so I think I may have to cut about an inch or two is this how us older ladies end up with no hair in the end??? WHAT ELSE???? HUGS TO ALL!!!
