Perimenopause - Help! I need to sleep!

Posted , 19 users are following.

So I'm experiencing all the symptoms of the Perimenopause (lucky me!??). Hot flushes, mood swings (happiest woman alive one minute and raging Rosie the next??), can't cope with normal tasks (e.g. Had to walk out of Morrisons one day just because I felt I couldn't cope with it ????), lack of concentration and only had three periods in the last year. On top of all this.. I'm hardly sleeping, which I just can't cope with.

Today I couldn't go into work because I just couldn't face it after another night having a couple of hours sleep. When I did drift off I had nightmares. I really need some advice from others on anything you've found to help.

I'm currently trying black cohosh and cod liver oil tablets, but I don't think they're helping. I thought they were but I had a light period and I think that's the only reason I felt better for a week or so. It was bliss to get a good nights sleep.

I've made an appointment at the doctors, but having been previously and finding they're not really that helpful, I'd much prefer to take some advice from others who are going through, or have gone through this.

Why did no-one warn us about this!! Jeezo! I'm normally a pretty upbeat, happy person but finding this new chapter in my life pretty hard to cope with ??

Oh, and feeling the need to speak my mind is going to get me into trouble soon too I think ??

Your advice is needed and will be much appreciated by myself (and my suffering husband, family and friends)

It's difficult to know what works because my symptoms aren't there all the time ?? How rubbish this is. They do say it's not called the change for nothing. You seem to turn into a different person! Sometimes! Jeezo.. I'll need to start walking around with a warning notice around my neck ?? I used to think I was bad with PMT, but this is very different ??

Hi Kristi, I too,had nights of NO sleep, which went on for many weeks. I couldn't function either. I tried lots of over the counter remedies, and had anti depressants, sleeping tablets and beta blockers prescribed. I tried one sleeping tablet and never again! I did take propranalol, but I found it gave me reflux. Since I started using Magnesium both in a spray at bedtime, and as cell salts during the day, I can function again, and manage around I've hours sleep a night. It can't harm you like prescription drugs, so try it and see if it helps?

Maybe you need to go on HRT, if not then it's trial & error on taking herbals. Try Macca, or Macafem, Flaxseed oil, Vitamin D3 for mood, Fish oil with EPA & DHA. Black cohosh didn't work on me after taking it 3 months, as I had severe hot flashes. I also took St. John's wort, to stop all my crazy symptoms which it did. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I spoke to the doctor the other day about HRT and I'll give it some thought. I'd rather not right now because most of the time I can cope, just. My hot flushes are bad when I get them, but they last days/weeks at a time, which I can live with (I'm saying that obviously because I don't have them right now ??) It's the lack of sleep that really gets me down. Brain fog and lack of concentration aren't great for work either ?? Think I'll give the St John's wort a go next.

Flax seed oil, and a pill called Hot Flash took away my hot flashes. I had them bad, for brain fog, I took Gingko biloba and Fish oil.

Were you having hot flushes all the time? I can't even think straight doing this ???? I think what I'm trying to say is, should I just buy all these or should I start with anything in particular? I'm assuming taking all these together is pretty safe?

I also took Vitamin D3. Sleeping was a big issue for me too, but I recently came across a medical journal that says that 5-HTP helps your mood and helps with sleeping because it has tryptophan. The substance we need to fall asleep. If I knew this then I would have bought it. I tried Melatonin, it was horrible, scary stuff, I don't recommend it.

I took Flaxseed oil at night 2 tablespoons or hot flash pill at night.  I took St. John's wort when i got anxiety or heart palps. Macca in the morning. Vitamin D3 in the morning. Yes, they are safe to take.

I just got 5-HTP yesterday ?? I'm going to wait a few days to try it because the doctor gave me sleeping tablets, so I don't want to mix anything with them. She didn't think my current sleep problem was related to the peri (joy! A new unknown issue!) hence the sleeping tablets. I've never taken them before and Tuesday was the first time. Had a great sleep ?? I didn't take one last night and I was back to not sleeping, so another pill tonight it is ?? Hopefully this current insomnia issue will sort itself out soon ?? I certainly don't need this on top of the peri symptoms ??

But 5-HTP is also good as a mood enhancer and for weight loss. It may promote sleep, I don't think it will overlap if you take it in the morning.

Not being able to sleep is a symptom of peri/meno. I know it is because I went through it really bad. In fact I went through everything really bad, lol. Horrible hot flashes, no sleep except 3 hours at a time, anxiety, heart palps, etc. and It will no sort itself out, it may actually get worse over time. Waking up several times a night, going to the bathroom, I mean it's just horrible everything we go through to get to menopause, and still we can continue to have symptoms while in menopause until bodies have had it, lol.
