Perimenopause or Anxiety or ???

Hi everyone,

I recently joined this, my first ever forum, in the hope of gaining knowledge and sharing experiences on the strange symptoms I have been experiencing the last few weeks.

My first post focused on Anxiety and the possibility of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It has recently been brought to my attention, there is a possibility my symptoms could be hormone related. Something I never actually considered.

Brief list of symptoms...

Fatigue (groggy and heavy type tiredness)

Brain Fog

Feeling detached and 'spaced out'

Weak and Shaky

Jelly Legs

Weak Fingers and Toes

Sensitive to light and sound

Sometimes feels like I have flu or a bad virus (even though I know I don't)

Light Headed

Light Dizziness

Easily tired out

Occasional Palpitations

Frequent urination (occasionally)

Anxious (more so than usual)

Brief History...

I have had anxiety issues, on and off, for many years and also hormone induced migraines. This year the migraines are definitely worse and so too is the anxiety. I had an 8 day brutal migraine early/mid September, followed by 8 days of severe brain fog/dull fuzzy head. I haven't been the same since. I'm also wondering if my symptoms are migraine related? I've had 2 full blood tests done and 2 urine samples taken. All came back normal/clear and healthy. I've also been to see an ENT consultant who ruled out an inner ear virus. He also checked my throat and balance. I had a full eye examination last week and my eyes are in great shape. I have an MRI booked next week and also an appointment to get an ECG recorder fitted for 48 hours.

My symptoms are so broad and general, it could be a number of things... I have even considered CFS. Now I'm thinking it could be hormone related? I feel more anxious not knowing what this is!

Is anybody experiencing anything similar?

Any replies/advice would be greatly appreciated x

hiy im 51 this year but had a hysterectomy in my late 30s although i knew menopause would be coming i had no idea when as i had no periods to go by.  my started in december when rushed into hospital thinking i was having a heart attack which i now know was my introduction to the menopause.  my anxiety and panic attacks were daily and several times a day but not wanting to go on medication the dr sent me for counselling which i found to be so  helpful.  im starting to get out and about now sometimes have a little bit panic but nothing compared to what it was i also started swiming which tires me out i dont have a problem sleeping now not sure this for everyone but it helped me.

Hi Carlacupcake, I haven't been on here for a few weeks, however, I've been having a wee read through the threads tonight, I think you and anxious face have been suffering from the same symptoms as me.

Just wondering how your doing and if the dizzy/balance problems eased.  I've had this strange sensation since 27th March, just came on me while sitting in hairdressers and never left.  Like everyone else is saying who has this symptom GP hasen's a clue, does not recognise this symptom as part of peri, now hes sending me to stroke clinic tomorrow even though I have not got any typical symptoms of stroke and deep down I know it's hormonal imbalance.

Worried about losing job cause never know how I'm going to feel when I get up in the morning.

Hi to everyone going through all of this x

hello brendababy, before i  first started to post on this site i was in a dreadful state and thought i was slowly dying or going to have a stroke,  my GP didn't want to know but my specialist did send me for every test known to man , but reading firstly carlacupcakes post which i related to then so many others i started to come to terms with what i was going through was peri menopause and like you it just came on randomly and never left until last october when i started to improve and didn't feel dizzy/off balance daily.  I too was worried about my job and and never knew how i would feel when i woke, how i wouild feel when i got to work, if i was able to drive cos i was so shaky and how long i would stay at work, this i think brought on anxiety.  I know how your feeling brenda believe me but you will improve when your hormones start to calm down and you start to take time out and be kind to yourself.  We'r all different and it will take time but chin-up you'll get there.  I do have some rubbish weeks or days but not like when i started when it was daily.  Today i'm bloated and feel twice the size i usually am and do get lots of headaches but I'm getting my life back, i'v started to go out by myself more which i thought i'd never do again.  Keep reading the posts on here, jay has some good advice.  sending you a comforting hug and let me know how you get on at the stroke clinic.  xx

Hi, thanks for replying, went to work today and my balance was terrible, felt really shaky as well, was just trying to hide and blend in at my desk lol, kept having to get up & walk around.   Anyway, went to appointment after work, had 9 vials of blood taken, weighed and bp done.  weigh 7 stone 6 pounds, bp 112/62 while sitting, 124/67 while standing, blood results will be sent to GP.  Doctor then came and carried out several neurological tests, checking strength in limbs, vision, reflexes etc.  Doc said she was quite happy I haven't had stroke and don't need brain scan.  I asked if symptoms could be hormonal decline, she could not answer and told me to seek advice from gyno ( I've got appointment with gyno on 28th May).  Doc also said to stop taking stemitil as they are clearly not helping and that they cause anxiety.

So anxiousface, looks like I'm going to have to grin and bare it for now, some of my job involves driving to outreach, don't know how I'm going to manage though.  I'll keep you and everyone posted on how I get on when I go to gyno appointment.

Maybe between us all we'll find our own miracle cure....!

      All the best x

      Brendababy,

I had a similar day today. Had stiffness in my neck, my body ached and I felt dizzy but not like room spinning dizzy. I get this every month at certain times. I'll feel like if I don't hold on to something, I may fall over. Also feel clumsy. I figure since it hits every month that it must be hormonal. My periods are so unpredictable now. Missed last month and haven't gotten it yet this month. I'm 52. It's so annoying because I can never predict what kind of day I'm going to have. Ugh!

Hi nancy, The imbalance I have came on over 1 month ago and never went away, I have it everyday some days worse than others.  I always feel shaky and very nervous, haven't driven my car for weeks.  Today the balance problem has not been as bad as it usually is but not completely away, I think  wer'e in a vious circle as the anxiety makes the dizziness worse and vice versa.

I coulden't express myself properly when at doc's yesterday, she asked if I felt spinning or do I feel room spinning, I had to say neither, she looked at me as if I was daft... think I am lol.  You'll no what I mean it's that strange vibrating, shaky, imbalanced feeling.

Well I have not had any real bleeding since gyno carried out a procedure at out-patient clinic, think it was called ablation, I asked him for HRT and he insisted that I have procedure done.  Well came off HRT (it's a long story) but bleeding has stopped, since no periods symptoms getting worse.

I feel more positive today for some reason, decided that no matter how bad I feel I'm not going to let this interupt any plans I have for the day, wheither it's work, shopping etc.  I'm going to just drive when I feel able to and not put myself under any pressure.

I was threatening to cancel my holiday to spain in June because I was scared to fly due to balance problem, but I'm going... dizzy or not.

I'm sure nancy we'll have good days and bad, just come on-line when your despairing and 1 of the girls will help, I always feel better for it.

This is only temporary! and most ladies are over the worst within a couple of years.

Hi, Stemitil is a drug used to trat dizziness usually caused by middle ear inflammation & viruses, wasen't helping so advised to stop taking it as it can supposedly make anxiety symptoms worse.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me, hope you can enjoy just sitting in car while your husband does the driving.  I feel Iv'e really lost my confidence driving now because of the panic & agitation Iv'e had while out in car lately.

I'll keep you posted on any progress or any remedies I hear off to help with symptoms & hopefully gyno might be able to suggest something.

I started my menopause at 36 not long after the birth of my third child....over the past 16 years I've suffered from anxiety attacks but they've seemed to have reduced over the last few months...Have you been to your dr for blood tests yet?
