Perimenopause or Anxiety or ???

Hi everyone,

I recently joined this, my first ever forum, in the hope of gaining knowledge and sharing experiences on the strange symptoms I have been experiencing the last few weeks.

My first post focused on Anxiety and the possibility of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It has recently been brought to my attention, there is a possibility my symptoms could be hormone related. Something I never actually considered.

Brief list of symptoms...

Fatigue (groggy and heavy type tiredness)

Brain Fog

Feeling detached and 'spaced out'

Weak and Shaky

Jelly Legs

Weak Fingers and Toes

Sensitive to light and sound

Sometimes feels like I have flu or a bad virus (even though I know I don't)

Light Headed

Light Dizziness

Easily tired out

Occasional Palpitations

Frequent urination (occasionally)

Anxious (more so than usual)

Brief History...

I have had anxiety issues, on and off, for many years and also hormone induced migraines. This year the migraines are definitely worse and so too is the anxiety. I had an 8 day brutal migraine early/mid September, followed by 8 days of severe brain fog/dull fuzzy head. I haven't been the same since. I'm also wondering if my symptoms are migraine related? I've had 2 full blood tests done and 2 urine samples taken. All came back normal/clear and healthy. I've also been to see an ENT consultant who ruled out an inner ear virus. He also checked my throat and balance. I had a full eye examination last week and my eyes are in great shape. I have an MRI booked next week and also an appointment to get an ECG recorder fitted for 48 hours.

My symptoms are so broad and general, it could be a number of things... I have even considered CFS. Now I'm thinking it could be hormone related? I feel more anxious not knowing what this is!

Is anybody experiencing anything similar?

Any replies/advice would be greatly appreciated x

      Hi Louise..

bless you sweetie, I would try the Vit B6, and see if it improves how you feel, trial and error... it could work for you too..

give it a try... maybe your in early onset of peri...  you say ypur periods are still regular but have maybe other peri symptoms, to re assure you my old UK Doc years ago gave me Vit B6 prescription before my peri started fully.. so it should be fine, if unsure check with your GP.. but back then he didnt really explain how they would change my life and how I feel, so I didnt really bother with them, wish I had... I wouldnt be without them now.

take care hun... let us know how you get on... Jay xx

      Hi Louise,

I have bought the Busy 'Bs from Holland and Barrett and they have all of the B vits with B6 being 100mg.  I take this tablet first thing in the morning, but I also have a pot purly with just B6 which is 100mg dosage so you  could perhaps top up with this aswell. Jay was saying that they recomend min 100mg upto 300mg. I have been taking them since last Feb and they do help.  Spoke to my GP the other day and told her what I am taking and she was fine with this.  I have also bought a tablet called "Menopol Plus" (from simply supplements) and if you read the reviews they rate 4.5 out 5 - good for hot flushes but I mainly take them to help with the anxiety side of my symptoms. take care Joy xx

Hi ladies, my name is Deirdre, I had a hysterectomy about 20years ago, I am now 61yrs  I too had all your symptoms (and still do), however about 6 months ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia after many trips to the doctor, I was referred to a rheumatologist and within ten minutes he gave me a diagnosis. I was already on the medication he would have put me on ( tramadol, hormones, antidepressants, pregabalin, he also put me on ergocalciferol. Every symptoms are the same, from the brain fog to the sheer. Exhaustion, my gp never gave up on me and the rheumatologist is excellent, he is referring me to the physiotherapy department at our local hospital.  I would advise all of you to ask your gp if this syndrome is a possibility, it would be worth finding out for the support alone!!!     I wish you all well, good luck, and be kind to yourselves. Deirdre x

Hi Deidre, I wonder if I could ask you how you have got on with pregabalon? I am currently coming off of amitriptyline and my Dr has suggested I try pregabalon but I am nervous of trying anything else in case it makes me feel awful. Any advice? Xxx

Hi moods 28.   Hope you are not to bad today,  I have had absolutely no problems at all with taking pregabalin, it is actually an epilepsy drug, however it is very helpful for many things. It is very good for pain relief and excellent for any form of anxiety, it helps with lack of confidence and very many other things. I had a hysterectomy 20 years ago and I have been on Hart ever since, I still have hot flushes and night sweats, however what struck me about this website was that every person was suffering exactly the same symptoms as fibromyalgia, I was diagnosed about six weeks ago after a long time, years in fact of horrible symptoms, I was tested for many different things and within five minutes the rheumatologist had diagnosed me.   I really do think that it would be worthwhile all you ladies on this website to ask your doctor's opinion on the possibility of this.  Best wishes, be kind to yourself.  Deirdre x

Sorry. About the spelling of your name at the top of the page.

      Hi Deirdre

thanks for sharing... for those who dont know what Fibromyalgia is it is this..

short version........ mine is deffo menopause .... Jay xx

Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body.

As well as widespread pain, people with fibromyalgia may also have:

      increased sensitivity to pain

      fatigue (extreme tiredness)

      muscle stiffness

      difficulty sleeping

problems with mental processes (known as "fibro-fog") – such as problems with memory and concentration

      headaches

irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – a digestive condition that causes stomach pain and bloating

If you think you have fibromyalgia, visit your GP. Treatment is available to ease some of its symptoms, although they are unlikely to disappear completely.

      hi again..

      abit more info cont...

its very informative this website and thanks Deirdre for sharing this as its certainly informed me about it.. Jay xx

      1 in 20 people thats a shocker...

      cont,....

Anyone can develop fibromyalgia, although it affects around seven times as many women as men. The condition typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50, but can occur in people of any age, including children and the elderly.

It's not clear how many people are affected by fibromyalgia, although it's thought to be a common condition. Estimates suggest the condition may affect nearly 1 in 20 people globally.

One of the main reasons it's not clear how many people are affected is because fibromyalgia can be a difficult condition to diagnose. There is no specific test for the condition, and the symptoms can be similar to a number of other conditions.

Thanks Deidre, it is pain relief that I need it for. I have a lot of jaw, head and neck pain which is very debilitating. The amitriptyline was making me so groggy. Not keen to be taking anything really but the pain can be very bad. I did think about fibromyalgia but I thought generally you had pain all over not just localised in an area? I have had gabapentin which I think is similar but made me a bit tired. Thanks for sharing. Always glad of any info that might help. Xx

Hi mooma28, I took amytriptyline a few years ago now for migraine, it worked for the migraine but made me really groggy so after a year I stoped taking it for a few months but the migraines started again. Then I tried taking them again but they didn't do anything to help my migraine so I stop taking them. My migraine caused me a lot of pain which lead me to clench my teeth which caused neck and jaw pain. My doctor gave me beta blockers these have helped to relax me and everything has got a lot better. It's worth mentioning this to your doctor.

Thank you. I am seeing him next week so I'll see what he says xx I've been fitted with a night guard to stop me clenching at night and it all feels relaxed on waking but as soon as I get up the familiar tightness starts to creep back, together with pain. Not nice at all. So wish I could find a solution. No matter how much I try to relax it feels out of my control. That's why I wonder if hormone fluctuations are playing a part.xx
