Perimenopause or Anxiety or ???

Hi everyone,

I recently joined this, my first ever forum, in the hope of gaining knowledge and sharing experiences on the strange symptoms I have been experiencing the last few weeks.

My first post focused on Anxiety and the possibility of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It has recently been brought to my attention, there is a possibility my symptoms could be hormone related. Something I never actually considered.

Brief list of symptoms...

Fatigue (groggy and heavy type tiredness)

Brain Fog

Feeling detached and 'spaced out'

Weak and Shaky

Jelly Legs

Weak Fingers and Toes

Sensitive to light and sound

Sometimes feels like I have flu or a bad virus (even though I know I don't)

Light Headed

Light Dizziness

Easily tired out

Occasional Palpitations

Frequent urination (occasionally)

Anxious (more so than usual)

Brief History...

I have had anxiety issues, on and off, for many years and also hormone induced migraines. This year the migraines are definitely worse and so too is the anxiety. I had an 8 day brutal migraine early/mid September, followed by 8 days of severe brain fog/dull fuzzy head. I haven't been the same since. I'm also wondering if my symptoms are migraine related? I've had 2 full blood tests done and 2 urine samples taken. All came back normal/clear and healthy. I've also been to see an ENT consultant who ruled out an inner ear virus. He also checked my throat and balance. I had a full eye examination last week and my eyes are in great shape. I have an MRI booked next week and also an appointment to get an ECG recorder fitted for 48 hours.

My symptoms are so broad and general, it could be a number of things... I have even considered CFS. Now I'm thinking it could be hormone related? I feel more anxious not knowing what this is!

Is anybody experiencing anything similar?

Any replies/advice would be greatly appreciated x

    Hello all.

I've been searching for somewhere to talk to women going through peri menopause as I have felt as if I am going crazy or extremely ill. I started having anxiety attacks about two years or so ago. My primary physician put me on as needed Xanax. This helped for a while. Then I started having palpitations that rewarded me with two overnight hospital stays including a stress test then a cardiac cath. This included two echos. All have shown my heart to be strong and free of any blockages. All of this has caused horrible anxiety and crazy fears that at one point included an inability to shower alone for fear of passing out.

With each cardiac test coming back negative the symptoms eased up for a while only to come back with a vengeance. Lately I've been having dizziness (not bad just enough to worry me).

My cardiologist is an amazing woman who I work with so she is supportive but she may think I'm a little nutty.

I had a partial hysterectomy in my mid 30's because of fibroids so I have no idea if my periods would be slowing, skipping or stopping.

I find myself waking up sweating, with a rapid heartbeat, or just plain panicking and I don't know why.

I also find myself forgetting what I'm saying mid sentence and am pretty sure my family thinks I have early dementia.

Every test that has been run shows medically I am fine.

Does this get better? Will this let up? I'm a nurse and feel like I should know better but my area of expertise is cardiology not women's health. Sometimes I just want to pull my hair out and scream.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions, ideas, or words of wisdom and support.

PS I'm pretty sure my husband will end up losing fingers or toes to frostbite or the electric company will start sending me thank you cards if I can't figure out the hot flashes soon.

Hi Christie, for me it was depression and uncontrollable mood swings that nearly tipped me over the edge through Peri menopause. I had a weird nervous anxiety but the other mood problems, depression, anger, confusion, uncontrollable obsessive thinking that almost sent me crazy. It was all due to hormone imbalance. My problem is too much estrogen and when it spikes through my cycle it literally makes me crazy. I started bio identical 5 months and the difference is huge. Its been adjusted a few times and I'm on anti estrogens as well now and I'm feeling balanced again. I know this is different to your problem but it has the same end result and that is that it takes over our lives. Don't underestimate how powerful hormones are. They shape who we are.

Bio identical hormone replacement. My doctor uses my blood work plus my symptoms to work out how much of each hormone to give me. I have mine in a troche each morning. Its given me my life back.

Hi,There is a magnet that you can get, that is supposed to help, particularly with hot flushes. My friend bought one and said it has helped her hot flushes tremendously. She got it in Boots chemist, think it was about £35 approx but she said it has been well worth it.Might be worth a go.

How long ago did you have your partial. I'm 43 years old and had mine 1 1/2 years ago. It also was a partial. Till that point I barely went to doctor unless I couldn't get rid of a cold. Since hysterectomy I've seen more doctors, specialist, and the er more than I have my whole life. Also was losing weight now I feel so crappy I barely have energy to shower.

My symptoms have Been better (have all you are talking about ) but than bam they hit full force. Hormones have helped for a bit but than seem to get me no where close to feeling normal. I have stopped them cuz I'm tired of paying for stuff that doesn't work. Also very hard to explain because of having a partial no one wants to believe I'm having hormone issues. Finally after 8 months they tested I had no estrogen and yet I have ovaries.

My cardiologist has been the only one to ensure that it's not my heart causing all this. Never had bad sinuses or allergies. Now there awful ears hurt badly and all they throw at me is allergy meds. Not helping.

Your not alone and this forum has helped me a lot.

Thank god for it cuz I think that I may be admitted to the looney bin if not for this site.

Hi Chris. You're not alone. 2 yrs ago I underwent surgery to remove ovarian cyst. Since then, my life has changed. 2nd night after surgery I was in bed at the hospital when an usual head sensation came on, accompanied by terrible palpitation. Imy b/p elevated. I felt death itself. Very scary situation. The morning after there was a bit of bleeding which was expected as was told by doc. I was not treated for the palpitation. Had ECG done which showed normal result.

On the next month about 2 wks prior to menstration that same weird feeling reappeared. I discovered then, that these symptoms were somewhat connected to menstration. In December of the same year I decided to see a Naturopathic Doc. He doesn't do examination, but, once he's heard your symptoms, or has seen tests results you'd have obtained, he's able to diagnose your prob. He was the one to explain that my probs were as a result of hormonal imbalance. I

Hey Michelle, It shows your post was 4 days ago but just seeing it. If  no estrogen but still have ovaries it's because they start giving up, and the adrenals take over (or try to). I have been reading over and over to 'support the adrenals,' bc when they get overtaxed, because they're having to do the ovaries' job, now too, a whole bunch of other symptoms come up (that we are trying to take this and that for every symptom). So if you're not already, I would get a good adrenal supplement for the day and one for the night to help restore. Doctor Berg online has some real good ones I am ordering when I'm done with my health food store ones. I used one of his formulas before for gallbladder and it worked great, plus he posts videos online alot explaining body systems and knows his stuff. I hope you'll try it, I think it may help. The one at night seems to be helping me sleep better, too.

Hi,I'm having some of the symptoms you have written down.A couple of weeks ago my feet were badly swollen for a couple of days.My doc said it was lymphodoema but since then I've been getting so many of the symptoms youve described.I've has a hysterectomy and am on hrt(which is pretty useless to be fair!)This past week,my head is like a fuzzy mess. When I get headaches they are usually migraines if hormonal but these are just very uncomfy and annoying.I also have been getting the tremor/vibrating feeling along with anxiety and very achey feelings in my limbs.I'm also experiencing a pain behind my right knee but that may be a different cause.I,like most people, start worrying that it is something nasty! I have got to go back to the docs on Monday to get the results of my blood tests and see if she can shd some light on it all.I'm starting to think hormonal now but its scary stuff.Think in this day and age we'd be able to sail through this menopause lark!😒

      Hi Melanie,

I tried to respond a few days ago on my phone and lost the whole message.

I hope you are Ok. I get the tremor/vibration feeling, like the room is shaking. Did you get your blood results back? What type of HRT are you on? Found out recently I have a zinc deficiency, which can cause many, many symptoms in the body -- one of which is the tremor! And nervous system, immune system function, nervous system, eyesight, gastro issues, mood, and even hormone synthesis, etc etc. So something to check out. Also, if you have zinc checked, ask for copper to be checked too. Too much is toxic, or if levels are not balanced. A zinc-copper ratio is best, if you can find someone who does hair mineral analysis, as conventional docs don't know how to do that.

Another thing I was going to suggest from what I've been reading, and hopefully everyone is reading, is to take supplements and make lifestyle changes to support the adrenals...bc they take over for the no longer functioning ovaries, and when they get stressed, the thyroid doesn't work right, cortisol levels get out of whack, the sex hormones, and a myriad of other symptoms.

There are adrenal supplements you can take during the day to help with energy and stress response, and adrenal supplements you can take before bed to help them heal. Doing that and getting to bed earlier and doing everything possible to decrease stress, can help.

Lately I've been getting some weird feelings in my throat, idk if due to acid reflux or what. But am reading zinc deficiency can cause all sorts of issues.

Another thing I just started was taking my bio-dentical hormones the natural, cyclic way, that our body uses them, verses every single day. And I got them prescribed in plastic syringes, so that I am getting more exact doses. That never seemed right to me. So I'm hopeful that will get them balanced and in the proportion they are meant to be in based on the wisdom of the body, along with some serious zinc supplementation! Its a wonder I've even been able to function.

      Hi Carlacupcake,

As a P.S. on my above post to Melanie, and maybe this will will you sleep, I started taking 5 htp, which converts to serotonin. It helps you sleep good, is good for your brain and mood. And it's relatively cheap from the health food store.

I know how frustrating it is. I have had terrible insomnia, and or symtpoms so bad I was afraid to fall asleep for fear I wouldn't wake up. So I know how you feel. So I take that and my progesterone cream at night, and now in a cyclical method based on how the body utilizes hormones in the natural monthly cycle, versus the medical way (using them every single day). Hormones have to be in certain proportions for everything to work right. So I take the Biest cream every day, (Day 1 of the month being the first day if your cycle is all over the place and you don't know where it is, like me), then the progesterone on days 12-26 of my cycle (like I used to do for PMS when I was younger and it worked beautifully. I am 47.

      Hang in sister.

Have you ever thought of sleep apenea?  Last fall I was super exhausted all the time even if I slept all night or woke up early.  Blood tests were all normal.  But the lab tech suggested a sleep study to double check that because she has sleep apnea.  I was shocked beacuse I thought it was just for overweight ppl who snore loudly. I haven't looked into a sleep study yet but should because I want to feel energized when I get up in the morning.
